Local Notes:

Clinton HS

  • Girls Basketball: Clinton 61 – Brashier Middle College 6… The Lady Red Devil opened up their season last hosting the Lady Devil Invitational… In the first game, the Palmetto Mustangs defeated the Newberry Bulldogs… In the second game the Red Devils did just about as well as they could do in an opening game as everyone who was dressed out got to play as the Red Devils rolled to a 61-6 win over the Brashier Middle College Bengals… The game was all but over after the first quarter as the Red Devils led 21-0 at its end and then never scored less than 6 point in a quarter (the fourth)… Coach Gardner said afterwards “Great first night. Contributions from everyone”… They most likely will be taking some free throw practice as they did shoot less than a little less than 33% from the charity stripe… The Red Devils had 2 players score in double-digits as Bryanna Belton scored 15 points and Ry’Daijia Mars finished with 14… Also scoring for the Red Devils you had Taneal Evans 9, Anna Litzenberger 8, Zakalia Redd 6, Mylayja Thompson 5, Hanna Gary 3, Symiah Floyd 2 and Nah’Shia Wright 1… The Red Devils will face Palmetto tonight I at 7:30 in the tournament finals… Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Girls Basketball: Raiders 30 – Broome 25… The Lady Raider basketball team continued its participation in the Coach Varner Tipoff Classic at the Woodruff Activity Center last night and good news for Raider fans as they took a 30-25 win over the Broome Centurions…  The Raiders trailed 15-18 at the half but came out in the 3rd quarter and started using a press and held the Centurions to just 1 point in the quarter to take a 24-19 lead going into the 4th quarter… The Centurions got to within 1 point of the Raiders several times in the final 8 minutes of play but the Raiders got clutch baskets to hold on and take the win… The Raiders were led by Zoe Young who had a game-high 9 points… Dayzhia Grant finished with 8 points, faith Jackson 6, MyAngel Walker 4 and Akacia Smith 3.
  • Up Next for the Girls… The team will be back in action tonight at 7:30 at the Woodruff Activity Center as they close out their play in the Varner Tipoff Classic taking on BHP which defeated Greer Middle College Charter game last night… The Center is not too far down the road from Woodruff HS on the left and is located at 176 Lucy P.   • Boys Basketball: Seneca 65 – Laurens 59… The Raider boys’ basketball team opened its season yesterday afternoon as they start their participation in the 2022 Impact Sports Invitational @ Spartanburg Christian Academy… The Raiders had a rather cool shooting first half as they trailed the Bobcats 35-21 at the half but turned up the offense and defense as well as cut down on turnovers in the second half to fall by a final score of 59-65… The Raiders outscored the Bobcats 28-17 in the third quarter and got to within 2 points of the Bobcats in the third quarter and a couple of more times in the fourth quarter before falling… The Raiders were led by Ty Johnson who had a game-high 26 points followed by Mason Redd with 17 and Martinez Shaw with 10… Others scoring for the Raiders were Devon Redd, Tylon Fuller and Narrius Jones who all finished with 6 points.

  • Raider Boys Basketball Hosting Tip Off Fundraiser Dinner… The Raider Boys Basketball team will host a fundraising dinner on November 27th at 4:00 pm… This event will be held at The Ballroom which is located at 241 S. Harper Street Ext. in Laurens… The cost per person is $50 or for a table of 8 is $350… The guest speaker will be Devon Smith, author of the book “How a Roundball Shaped My Life”, and a catered meal will be included… All proceeds from this event will help offset the costs of uniforms, equipment, and travel for the boys’ basketball team… The deadline to order tickets is Wednesday, 11-23-22 Contact Coach Armond Flood at apflood@laurens55.org for more information… Click here to purchase your tickets for this event.

Laurens Academy… Last night the Laurens Academy Crusader varsity basketball teams hosted the Knights of Oakbrook Prep

  • Girls: Crusaders 34 – Knights 14… In girls’ action, the Crusaders picked up their first win of the young season as they defeated the Knights 34-14… The Crusaders led 23-8 at the half and then cruised on to the win… Olivia Huck had a game-high 15 points closely followed by Rylee Ballard’s 13… Others scoring for the Crusaders included Addi Hornberger and Hannah Ervin who both scored 2 points and Gracie Hall and Madisyn Graham who each had 1. The Crusaders are now 1-2 on the young season.
  • Boys: Knights 67 – Crusaders 40… In boys’ action, the news is not as good as the Knights took a 67-40 win over the Crusaders…  The score was 16-13 Knights at the end of the first quarter but Crusader offense cooled off in the second and third quarters scoring on 6 points in each of them to trail 25-50 going into the final 8 minutes of play… There the Crusaders picked up their scoring but it was just was not enough… The Knight’s Brad Caldwell led all scorers with 20 points… Braydon Burke and Andrew Codington led the Crusaders with 11 and 10 points respectively… Hector Rubio scored 6 points, Buddy baker 3, Clarence Bertoli 3, Daniel Ervin 3, Garrett Murphy 1 and Jarred Willard 1
  • Up Next… The Crusader will be back in action tonight as they host the Greenwood Christian Hawks starting with middle school girls at 4:00 pm… Good Luck to the Crusaders.

  • College Playoff Rankings… The College Playoff Rankins were updated Tuesday (11-15-22)… The top 4 are the same as they were when the initial rankings came out and are all undefeated…they are in  order from 1-4 are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee is still #5 but LSU has moved up a spot to #6 and former #6 Oregon has dropped all the way to #12… Clemson moved up a spot from #10 to #9… To see the entirety of this ranking click here.
  • FBS AP Top 25… In the latest AP Poll for DI College Football had one change in the top 5 compared to last week… The top 4 are still Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee last week’s #5 dropped to #9 after losing to the Gamecocks Saturday night and Southern California has moved up to #5… Clemson did move up from #9 to #7 thanks to the Gamecocks… To see the entire poll click here.
  • FCS Coaches Poll… Now for the real college football junkies out there, the latest FCS Coaches Poll still has South Dakota State still is at #1 and Sacramento State is still #2…To see the entire poll click here… Furman is still ranked #13.

Men’s Basketball

  • AP Top 25… The latest AP DI College Men’s Basketball poll (11-21-22) did have some shakeup in the top…  North Carolina is still #1but Houston moved up to #2 while Gonzaga dropped to #6… Kansas checks in at #3, Texas #4 and Virginia #5… The top 5 are all undefeated… If you want to see the latest AP Top 25 Men’s DI Poll click here.

This & That:

 Laurens County Touchdown Club… Once again this football season the Laurens County TD Club will be meeting every other Thursday at noon at The Ridge located at 319 Exchange Drive in Laurens… The coast of the annual membership is only $150 which gets you one ticket to all 7 of the regular meetings and one ticket to the Annual awards banquet… To see the flyer that the TD Club has put out that contains more information about the meetings, click here…To join or if you have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 833-2716 or at mowings@laurenscounty.org… Partial videos of the TD Club meeting featuring any awards handed out and what the local coaches had to say at the meeting (as well as guest speakers ) will be available a few days to a week after the meetings… To see those videos click here… All the meetings except the 11-17-22 video are available at the previous link… The next meeting will be their Annual Awards Banquet on 12-7-22 at The Ridge where South Carolina State Football Coach Buddy Pugh will be the guest speaker.


Laurens YMCA Reindeer Run December 10th… The Laurens Family YMCA will be holding its 23rd Annual Reindeer Run on December 10th… The proceeds from the go toward supporting the Youth Scholarship Program… The 5K run will start at 9:00 AM and the Fun Run will start at 9:05… There are prizes for the top 2 runners in both the Male and Female Divisions… Registration is now $35… To register for the event or for more information call the Laurens Family YMCA at 864-984-2626 or stop by the Y at 410 Anderson Drive in Laurens.
