Update of Schedule for Emerald City Classic Baseball Tournament… I reached out to Coach Mack Hite the baseball coach at Emerald HS yesterday asking about an update schedule for his preseason tournament which has been hampered by rain… Below is what he sent me that concerns the Raider and the Red Devils… Be sure to take all tis with a grain of wet salt as the weather forecast for tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday is not promising…. All games are to be played at Emerald HS so far.
- Today (Wednesday): BHP vs. Laurens at 5:00 pm
- Thursday: Mid-Carolina vs. Laurens at 5:00 pm and BHP vs. Clinton at 7:30
- Saturday: Clinton vs. Mid-Carolina at time to be determined… Also there will be other games on Saturday as early as 9:00 am and the exact matchups are to be determined by the results of the remaining games in pool play.
Clinton HS
- Romines Steps Down… Yesterday I received the following announcement from Clinton AD Louie Alexander… “Coach Eddie Romines has decided to step down as the Clinton High School Varsity Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Romines led the program for seven years. During the seven-year span, Coach Romines accumulated an overall record of 80 – 77 and won 2 Region Championships. He will now be able to devote more time to his lovely wife, their children, and their grandchildren… Coach Dontavius Glenn has been promoted from within and will assume the responsibilities as Head Boys Basketball Coach. Coach Glenn is a 2007 graduate of Clinton High School. He received his degree in Sociology from Clemson University and obtained his Masters Degree in Special Education from Grand Canyon University. Coach Glenn has ten years of coaching experience with Clinton High School. He has coached football, basketball, and track. Dontavius and his wife Erika have four children; Emarian (17), Cedarius (16), Landen (9), and Dontavius, Jr (5).”… From a personal standpoint I can tell you that Coach Romines has had a deep love of the game and the players and has given it his best… I am sure he will be around to cheer on the Red Devils… My best wishes for him and Brenda!
- C-Team Baseball: Clinton 7 – Irmo 6… Monday the Red Devil baseball C-team started participation in a preseason tournament down at Dreher HS taking a 7-6 win over a Irmo… To read more about how it happened, click here for information provided by Coach Jason Glenn and click here to see the box score.
- Wrestling Update… I need to do some catching up with the Red Devil wrestling team as they have now concluded their inaugural season.
- Region Championships… At the Region Meet held at Woodruff HS a couple of weeks ago, Blake Greenwood, Kendarious Copeland, George Cody, Joseph Carles, and Rion Gordon all won Individual a Region Championship in their weight classes… Also, Coach Andy Wright was selected as Wrestling Coach of the Year for Region IV-AAA… Congratulations to all!
- Team State Tournament… The wrestling team qualified for the SCHSL State Tournament as they finished #4 in the region as a team… They defeated Travelers Rest in the first round of the tournament and Crescent in the second round… In the third round, they fell to region foe Chester which had finished #1 in the region… Chester lost to West Oak in the next round which went on to capture the Class AAA Championship.
- Individual State Tournament… Two of the Red Devil wrestlers also did very well at the SCHSL Individual wrestling Tournament held this past weekend…. Blake Greenwood finished second in the 132 lb. weight class and George Cody won the State Championship in the 160 lb. weight class… Cody was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Tournament in Class AAA… Congratulations to all these Red Devils and Coach Wright on very good first season!
Laurens HS
- Two Raiders Participate in State Wrestling Meet… Two Raider wrestlers qualified for the State Meet held at the Anderson Civic Center this past weekend… First congratulations to Mason parsons as he qualified for the State Tournament last weekend in the 162 lb. class… Parson finished third in the in his weight class…. The other Raider to qualify was Emily Riopel who qualified for the State Girls Wrestling Tournament… She finished second in her weight … I was taught never to ask a lady about her age and weight, so I’ll not be telling you her weight class… Congratulations to both of them!
- Raider Basketball and Cheerleading Banquet March 11th… The Raider basketball teams and the cheerleaders will be holding their Awards banquet Saturday, March 11th at Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church starting at 5:00 pm… Family and guest should purchase their tickets for the banquet by Saturday, March 4th so they can have a headcount for the catered meal… For more information about this click here and to purchase your tickets click here.

- AP Top 25… The latest AP DI College Men’s Basketball poll (2-2623) did not have any changes in the top 5… Houston, Alabama, Kansas, UCLA and Purdue hold down those spots in that order… There were some changes in spots 6-10 and those spots are now occupied by Marquette (10 last week), Baylor (9 last week), Arizona (7 last week), Texas (8 last week) and Gonzaga (12 last week) … If you want to see the latest AP Top 25 Men’s DI Poll click here.

Women’s Basketball
- AP Top 25… The latest AP DI Women’s College Basketball poll (2-26-23) also had some shakeup in the top 10 as there were a few teams moving up or down… The undefeated (29-0) South Carolina Gamecocks still remain at #1 and Indiana #2 with 2 losses… Utah jumped from #8 to #3 after defeating Stanford, LSU moved up a spot to #4 and Maryland jumped 2 spots to #5…. Stanford fell from #3 to #6, Iowa dropped a spot to #7, Virginia Tech moved up a spot to #8, UConn dropped from #4 to #8 and Notre Dame still holds to #10… If you want to see the latest AP Top 25 Women’s DI Poll click here.

NASCAR
- Kyle Busch Wins Cup Race in California… Kyle Bush picked up his first Cup Series win of the season and the 61st of his career… This was his first victory in 28 races… He led the last 21 laps despite having some early problems in the race… To see more about this race which includes a link to the official race results, click here.
