Local Notes

Clinton HS

  •  Clinton 5 – Hanahan 4… The Red Devils are the State Champion in baseball… Those words have not been heard around Clinton HS in 61 years but last night they were heard often and loudly as the Red Devils took and exciting 5-4 win over the Hanahan Hawks to win the SCHSL Class AAA Baseball Championship… The Red Devils took and early 4-0 lead after 1 inning of play but the Hawks battled back and the game was tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning… There Justin Copeland led the inning off with a walk… Coach McCarthy then called for a sacrifice bunt by Caleb Taylor which he executed perfectly… He had also instructed Copeland to not only go to second but also third on the bunt because he noted that the Hawks had not covered third base very well in similar situations earlier in the game… As Copeland slid into third, the Hawk first baseman threw wildly in an attempt to get him out throwing the ball away and allow him to come home with what would prove to be the winning run… The Hawks did not “go quietly into the good night” as in the top of the seventh as they had runners on the corners with 1 out but Carson Glenn was able to record a strikeout and then when the next batter hit a grounder to Bryce Young at second who flipped the ball to first for the third out, the dogpile quickly followed.
    • First Inning… In the first inning three walks, a hit batter, 2 singles and a sacrifice fly allowed the Red Devils to put 4 runs on the scoreboard… RBI singles by Wilson Wages and Luke Young pushed 4 of the runs across the plate while Brett Young had the sacrifice fly.
    • Hawks Scoring… The Hawks got three of the runs back in the top of the second inning when after 2 outs, starting pitcher Wil Stewart walked a batter and gave up 3 singles before he recorded the third out… The Hawks tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on a single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt.
    • Other Info… The Hawks actually outhit the Red Devils 8-4 but they did commit the one costly error in the sixth inning while the Red Devils played errorless ball… No Red Devil had over 1 hit and Carson Glenn picked up the win in relief of Wil Stewart as he pitched the last 3 innings… To see the game’s box score click here and to see the game’s scorebook to see how the runs were scores by each team click here.
    • More… The Red Devils finish the season with a great 26-3 record winning the last 18 games of the season and going undefeated in region play… After the game Coach McCarthy who is usually somewhat stoic and a man of few words was somewhat emotional as one would expect and had nothing but praise for the hard work and dedication that the team had this season… When asked when h knew the Red Devils “had the game”, he replied that it was not until Bryce Young fielded the ball cleanly and then smiled at him as if to say “don’t worry coach, I got this” and flipped the ball to first for the last out that he finally as able to relax… Congratulations to the Red Devils on a great season and doing what no one else in Class AAA did and that is win the very last game of the 2023 season! GO BIG Red!
