Clinton HS
- JV Football: Red Devils 28 – Bulldogs 8… Last Friday I mentioned to you that he Clinton JV football team traveled down to Newberry and defeated the Bulldogs 28-8 and at that time I did not have any other details on the game… Well I do now… The Bulldogs led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter and the half… The Red Devils then scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter and 8 in the 4th quarter to make the final score 28-8 Red Devils and run their season record to 2-0… Owen Glenn had a TD pass to Nyterian Smith and Rhett Gilliam had 2 rushing TDs while KJ Vance had 1… Bryson Perrin also had a reception to kill one of the Bulldogs pass attempt…. The team is now 3-0 and will play Thursday at Augusta HS with scheduled for 6:00 pm.
Laurens HS
- Volleyball… Last Thursday the Raider volleyball teams traveled up to Woodruff HS for a tri-match with the Wolverines and the Fountain Inn Fury… The Raiders defeated the Fury 2-1 but lost to the Wolverines 1-2
- Fountain Inn… The Fury won the first set 23-25 but the Raiders rebounded taking the next two sets 25-11 and 26-24… For the Raiders, Ellen Reynolds had 7 aces & 17 assists; Zakhia Davenport had 20 digs and Alice Barron had 7 Kills and 4 blocks.
- Woodruff… Against the Wolverines, the Raiders won the first set 25-23 but fell in the next two sets by scores of 18-25 and 25-27… In this match the Raiders Alice Barron had 4 solo blocks and 1 assist block, Emma Wilson had 8 Kills and Zakhia Davenport had 10 digs… The Raider varsity record is now 2-5
- JV Action… In JV action the Raiders lost to both Fountain Inn and Woodruff by identical scores of 0-2… Fountain won their sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-13 while the Wolverines won their sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-10… The JVs are 0-7 on the season.
- Schedule Note… The Clinton at Laurens volleyball matches that were scheduled to be played Wednesday (9-8) have been moved to tonight (9-5) due to the Homecoming Parade at Clinton tomorrow…. The JV match will start at 5:30 in the main gym at LDHS and the varsity match will start about 7:00 pm
Laurens Academy
- Murphy Chosen as TD Clun Player of the Week… Monday it was announced
that Laurens Academy Junior Garrett Murphy has been chosen by the Laurens County Touchdown Club as the Player of the week for his performance in the Crusaders 58-0 win over the Newberry Eagles at Newberry last Friday… Murphy is a junior offensive running back, outside linebacker and a special team’s player…. He had 12 total tackles on defense with 3 tackles for a loss and a forced fumble… Offensively, Murphy had 8 rushes for 116 yards and a touchdown… Receiving he had 5 catches for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns and had two successful 2 point conversions … Laurens Academy Head Football Coach Jolly Doolittle stated, “Garrett is a relentless worker that practices as hard as he plays, serves as well as he scores TDs, blocks as well as he catches, fakes as well as he runs, makes special plays on special teams and plays assignments to annihilation on defense.”… He will be honored at the TD Club meeting at noon this Thursday at The Ridge where in addition to the local high school coaches the guest speaker will be Presbyterian College Head Football Coach Steve Englehart… For more information about the TD Club look below in the This and That section.

- FBS AP Rankings… The latest AP Ranking (8-14-23) for the FBS Division have the top 5 as Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama and LSU in that order… Spots 6-10 are occupied by Southern California, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson and Washington… To see the entire top 25 click here.

Atlanta Braves… The Braves finished their 4-game series with the Dodgers out in LA over the weekend… As you may recall they won the first game on Thursday by a score of 8-7.
- Saturday: Braves 6– Dodgers 3… The Braves scored 6 unanswered runs through the top of the 8th inning and then held the Dodgers to just 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 6-3 win over the boys in blue… The Braves outhit the Dodgers 14-6 with Travis d’Arnaud (10) homering in the 2nd inning, Ronald Acuna Jr.(31) homering in the 3rd inning and Marcel Ozuna (32) homering in the 4yh inning… All were solo shots… Max Fried (6-1) got the start and the win going 7 innings giving up just 3 hits and no runs while striking out 10 and walking just 2.
- Saturday: Braves 4 – Dodgers 2 (10)… On Saturday he Braves and the Dodgers battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of 9 innings… Both teams scored a single run in the 3rd inning with the Braves coming on Ronald Acuna Jr’s. 32nd homer of the year that left the park at 121.2 mph and went 454 ft… The Braves took the lead in the top of the 10th inning when Orlando Arcia (17) slammed a 3-run homer… The Dodgers did get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning to make the final 4-2.
- Sunday: Dodgers 3 – Braves 1… The Dodgers avoided the sweep by taking a 3-1 in the series finale on Sunday… They simply outhit the Braves 11-5 and the Braves only run came off the bat of Matt Olson when he hit his 44th homer of the year in the 7th inning.

Greenville Drive… the Greenville Drive finished their series with the Brookland Cyclones over the weekend at Flour Field.
- Friday: Drive 3 – Cyclones 0… The Greenville Drive took Friday’s game by a score of 3-0 by simply outhitting the Cyclones 11-5… There were no homers in the game so all the runs were scored playing small ball.
- Saturday: Cyclones 6 – Drive 0… On Saturday the Cyclones turned the tables taking a 6-0 win over the Drive… The only outhit the Drive 10-9 but 3 of their hits were homers.
- Sunday: Drive 9 – Cyclones 8… In a game that went back and forth all day, the Drive managed to take a 9-8 win over the Cyclones thus winning the series 4 games to 2.
- Drive Schedule…The Drive were off last night and will close out their regular season tonight as they start a six-game series with the Aberdeen Iron Birds up in Aberdeen, Md… To see the Drive’s schedule, click here.

- Kyle Larson Wins First Playoff Race at Darlington… In the Cup Series playoff race at Darlington Sunday night, Kyle Larson took the win in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington… He led the last 55 laps of the race and held off Tyler Redick to take the win… Click here for more information on the race.

- Laurens County TD Next Meeting September 7th… The Laurens County Touchdown Club kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday, August 24th… The club meets bi-weekly at The Ridge (City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters) at noon for a lunch… Each week the high school coaches will talk about their recent games and upcoming opponents… After the first meeting, there will also be quest speakers… To see a list of who those speakers are scheduled to be for each meeting click here… The TD Club will close out its season on Wednesday, December 6th with its Post Season Awards Banquet… For more information on how to join the club or become a sponsor click here… See you there!
