Sports Talk Media High School Football Recap… Each week during the high school football season Sports Talk Media Network does a recap of high school football in the South Carolina… It is about 10 minute long… They have made that recap available to WLBG and I will make it available for you to listen to… Click on the week below to hear it… Enjoy!


Clinton HS

  • Volleyball… Last night the Red Devil volleyball teams traveled over to Laurens HS in round two of the “county championships”… As you may recall at Clinton on Monday, August the 28th, the Red Devil JV team defeated the Raiders by a score of 2-0 and the Raider varsity took a 3-0 win over the Red Devils… Last night in JV action, the Red Devils again won again 2-0 with set scores of 25-21 and 25-19… In varsity action, it was a hard-fought match but, in the end, the Red Devils took a 3-2 win… The Red Devils won the first set 25-22 but the Raiders rebounded to take the second set 25-17 and the third set 26-24… The Red Devils then jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and went on to win it 25-12… In the fifth and deciding set, it was tied 10-10 when the Red Devils scored 5 unanswered points to win it 15-10 and take the match 3-2 thus splitting the 2-match series with the Raiders.
  • Girls Tennis… Catching up with the Red Devil girls tennis team:
    • Thursday, 8-31-23: Newberry 4 – Clinton 3… The Red Devils traveled to Newberry to take on the Bulldogs in their first match of the season and I hate to have to report that they fell to the Bulldogs 4-3… All three of the Red Devil wins came in singles action as Carly McMillan, Merin Orr and Kimora Wesley all defeated their opponents… For more information about this match click here.
    • Tuesday, 9-5-23: Clinton 4 – Mid-Carolina 3… Yesterday the lady Red Devils traveled down to Mid-Carolina HS to take on the Lady Rebels… Better news for Red Devil fans as they took a 4-3 win… Chandler Dailey, Libby Dailey and Kimora Wesley all took wins in singles action and the #1 doubles team of Chandler Dailey and Kimora Wesley also took a win… For more information on this match, click here… The team will be back in action tomorrow as they host Union County on the courts at Clinton MS.

Laurens Academy

  • Murphy Chosen as TD Clun Player of the Week… Monday it was announced that Laurens Academy Junior Garrett Murphy has been chosen by the Laurens County Touchdown Club as the Player of the week for his performance in the Crusaders 58-0 win over the Newberry Eagles at Newberry last Friday… Murphy is a junior offensive running back, outside linebacker and a special teams player…. He had 12 total tackles on defense with 3 tackles for a loss and a forced fumble…  Offensively, Murphy had 8 rushes for 116 yards and a touchdown…  Receiving he had 5 catches for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns and had two successful 2 point conversions … Laurens Academy Head Football Coach Jolly Doolittle stated, “Garrett is a relentless worker that practices as hard as he plays, serves as well as he scores TDs, blocks as well as he catches, fakes as well as he runs, makes special plays on special teams and plays assignments to annihilation on defense.”… He will be honored at the TD Club meeting at noon this Thursday at The Ridge where in addition to the local high school coaches the guest speaker will be Presbyterian College Head Football Coach Steve Englehart… For more information about the TD Club look below in the This and That section.

Thornwell Charter

  • Volleyball… Yesterday the Saints volleyball team hosted the Blue Flashes of Calhoun Falls… I am pleased to report that the Saints won 3-1 over Calhoun Falls… Thornwell took the first and second sets by scored of 25-15 and 25-21… Calhoun Falls bounced back and took the third set16-25… The two teams fought hard in the fourth set with the lead changing several times but when it was over the Saints had taken a close 25-23 win to win the match 3-1… The Saints improve to 3-1 for the season and will travel to Union County Say School tomorrow… Thanks to Cindy Pitts for the information…

  • FBS AP RankingsThe latest AP Ranking (9-5-23) for the FBS Division still has Georgia at #1 and Michigan #2… Alabama moves up a spot to # 3 and Florida State goers from #8 to #4… Ohio State rounds out the top 5… Clemson drops from #9 all the way to #25… To see the entire top 25 click here.

  • Cardinals 10 – Braves 6… The Braves finally returned home after a couple of weeks on the road and started a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals… Unfortunately I have to report that the Cardinals took a 10-6 win over the Braves despite homers by Ozzie Albies (29), Austin Riley (33) and Matt Olson (45).

  • Kyle Larson Wins First Playoff Race at DarlingtonIn the Cup Series playoff race at Darlington Sunday night, Kyle Larson took the win in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington…  He led the last 55 laps of the race and held off Tyler Redick to take the win… Click here for more information on the race.

  • Laurens County TD Next Meeting September 7th… The Laurens County Touchdown Club kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday, August 24th… The club meets bi-weekly at The Ridge (City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters) at noon for a lunch… Each week the high school coaches will talk about their recent games and upcoming opponents… After the first meeting, there will also be quest speakers… To see a list of who those speakers are scheduled to be for each meeting click here… The TD Club will close out its season on Wednesday, December 6th with its Post Season Awards Banquet… For more information on how to join the club or become a sponsor click here… See you there!
