Varsity Football Games Around the Area Tonight

  • Thornwell at McCormick… The Saints will travel over to McCormick to take on the Chiefs… One of the teams will pick up their first win of the season.
  • Oakbrook Prep at Laurens Academy… The 1-2 Crusaders are coming off their first win of the season a 58-0 win over Newberry Academy on the road last week… The Crusaders return home and will try to pick up their second win against the Oakbrook Prep Knights who are 2-0 on the season… They defeated Newberry Academy 32-16 at home 2 weeks ago and defeated King Academy 42-6 on the road.
  • Aiken at Clinton… The 3-0 Red Devils are at home tonight and it will also be Homecoming… They are coming off a 42-7 win over the Newberry Bulldogs last week and will be hosting the Aiken Green Hornets… The Hornets are looking for their first win of the season as they lost to two different teams from Georgia to start the season and Strom Thurmond on the road last week 12-48.
  • Laurens at Chapman… The Raiders are on the road for the first time this season and they are looking to pick up their first win of the season… They are on the road to Chapman to take on the Panthers… The Panthers are 2-1 on the season and started it off with wins over Woodruff (57-34 and Dorman (17-14) before falling to Boiling Springs 7-29 at Boiling Springs last week.
    • For those of you going… There are a few things you need to know before leavingThey include:

1) We are not a cross-over stadium.  All visiting fans will enter the gate to the left of the facility and walk down the sidewalk to the visitor’s side ticket booth entrance.

2) If a visiting fan has a valid handicapped parking pass they can enter at the double gates at the softball field and drive around to the area behind the visitor’s bleachers.  There is limited parking, but they can park on the grass or the curb near the Visitor’s ticket booth entrance.

3) It will be a 20 minute halftime.

4) There is a clear bag policy

5) No students under 9th grade will be admitted without an adult.

Clinton HS

  • JV Football: Clinton 30 – Aiken 0… The Red Devil JV football team continues to be undefeated as they took a 30-0 win over Aiken last night down in Aiken late yesterday afternoon and came back home with a 30-0 win… At this time I do not have any other information about the game but I hope to get some today and if I do I will pass it on to you later

Laurens HS

  • JV Football: Chapman 20 – Laurens 14… The Raider JV football team lost a heart breaker last night as the Chapman Panthers scored with 30.2 seconds left in the game to take a 20-14 win over the Raiders…
    • First Half: The Raiders scored the first time they had the ball with 28 seconds left in the 1st quarter when BJ Hill broke off a 36 yd. TD run capping an 86 yd. drive… Diego Angeles added the PAT to make it 7-0 Raiders… Chapman got on the board next on a 1 yd. run by Jasiah Copeland and the Panthers were able to convert on a pass play to make the score Panthers 8 and Raiders 7… The drive was only 30 yds. long and was set up by a strip and recover of the football by the Panthers.
    • Second Half… There was no further scoring until 38.5 second left in the 3rd quarter when Chapman scored again but missed the 2-point attempt to make it 14-7 Panthers… The Raiders then marched right back down the field mainly on the running BJ Hill and he scored from 1 yd. out with 9:26 left in the game on a 1 yd. run… Again Angeles added the PAT to tie the game 14-14… Neither team was able to move the ball very much on their next possession and the Panthers got the ball back with 3:01 left in the game and then went 80 yds. and scored on a short run with 30.2 seconds left but missed the PAT to make it 20-14 Panthers…. The Raiders got the ball back after the kickoff on their own 40 yd. line tried 4 passes completing the last one for a first down at the Chapman 34 yd. line as the buzzer sounded.

Laurens Academy

  • MS Football Crusaders 32 – Newberry 8… The Crusader middle school football team was able to get in their home game with the Newberry Academy Eagles yesterday and it is good news for Crusader fans as the they took a 32-8 win over the Eagles to improve their season record to 1-1… I don’t have a lot of details but according to Assistant Coach Shan Smith, Mason Cooper had 4 TD run of over 40 yds. each… Hodges Compton had a big day on defense with 6 big tackles and the defense as a whole played a dominating game.

Thornwell Charter

  • Volleyball Wins Close One 3-2… The Thornwell Saints volleyball team traveled to Union County Day School to take on the Eagles yesterday and good news for Saints fans as they came home with a 3-2 win… The Saints won the first set 25-14 but lost the next 2 sets by scores of 12-25 and 18-25… Facing a match loss, they came back and took the 4th set by a score 25-20… In the final tie-breaking set, the Saint prevailed by a score of 15-12… The Team is now 4-1 on the season and is scheduled to travel to the SC School for the Deaf and Blind on Tuesday, 9-12 for a 5:30 match… Thanks to Cindy Pitts for this information.

Middle School Football… Mother Nature stepped in yesterday and forced the postponement of all the area middle school football due to lightning and / or rain in the area… If the games are rescheduled and the coaches let me know I will pass that information along to you.

  • FBS AP RankingsThe latest AP Ranking (9-5-23) for the FBS Division still has Georgia at #1 and Michigan #2… Alabama moves up a spot to # 3 and Florida State goers from #8 to #4… Ohio State rounds out the top 5… Clemson drops from #9 all the way to #25… To see the entire top 25 click here.

 Atlanta Braves

  • Braves 8 – Cardinals 5… The Braves avoided being swept by the Cardinals in Atlanta last night as they took an 8-5 win in the final game of the 3-game series… The Braves only outhit the Cardinals 10-8 but 5 of their 10 hits were homers… Ronald Acuna Jr. (35) had a pair of solo homers in the game as he had one in the1st and 6th innings… Matt Olson (47) also had a solo homer in the 5th inning, Michael Harris II also had a solo homer in the 6th inning and finally Travis d’Arnaud (11) had a two-run homer in the 7th inning… The Braves “Magic Number” to clinch the NL East crown is now down to 10…. The Braves start a 3-game series with the Pirates in Atlanta tonight.

Greenville Drive.

  • Iron Birds 6 – Drive 5… The Greenville Drive lost a tough one to the Aberdeen Iron Birds up in Maryland last night by a score of 6-5… The Drive scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning to ties the game 5-5 only to have the Iron Birds come back and score a run in the bottom of the inning when with two outs Aberdeen’s Sanuel Basallo (7) had a solo homer to give the Iron Birds the 6-5 walk-off win.

  • Kyle Larson Wins First Playoff Race at DarlingtonIn the Cup Series playoff race at Darlington Sunday night, Kyle Larson took the win in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington…  He led the last 55 laps of the race and held off Tyler Redick to take the win… Click here for more information on the race.

  • Laurens County TD Next Meeting September 21st … The Laurens County Touchdown Club kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday, August 24th… The club meets bi-weekly at The Ridge (City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters) at noon for a lunch… Each week the high school coaches will talk about their recent games and upcoming opponents… After the first meeting, there will also be quest speakers… To see a list of who those speakers are scheduled to be for each meeting click here… The TD Club will close out its season on Wednesday, December 6th with its Post Season Awards Banquet… For more information on how to join the club or become a sponsor click here… See you there!
