Varsity Football Results from Last Friday Night… If you missed it on my sports Report for Monday, 9-18-23, click here to see a summary of how the four county football teams did last Friday night and when available more stats on the game… A possession-by-possession summary was added to the Laurens at Union game on Monday, 9-15-23.

Clinton HS

  • Zay Johnson Named to Shrine Bowl Team… Yesterday it was announced that Clinton’s Zay Johnson was named to the roster for the South Carolina team that will participate in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Saturday, December 16th at Spartanburg HS…  Zay is a senior on the Red Devil varsity football team who was picked as a defensive back and also plays wide receiver… If you would like to see the list of other players named to the South Carolina and North Carolina team, click here to go to the State Newspaper where there is an article about this.
  • Girls Tennis: Clinton 5 – Woodruff 1… Catching up with the Lady Red Devil tennis team. Last Thursday they traveled to Woodruff and came home with a 5-1 win over the Wolverines… Chandler Dailey, Libby Dailey, Kimora Wesley, Carly MacMillan and Addy Derrick all took one-sided wins in singles action… For more details on this match click here… The team is now 3-1 overall and 1-0 in region play.
  • Updated: JV Football: Clinton 38 – Chapman 20… The Red Devil JV football team traveled up to Chapman HS last night to take on the Panthers … The Red Devils led 26-0 at the half and then withstood a second half comeback attempt by the Panthers to take a 38-20 win to remain undefeated on the season… Both Jaydon Glenn and Noah Garrett had pick-sixes for the Red Devils while Rhett Gillian, KJ Vance and AZ Simmons and Angelo Cromer all had rushing TDs… Coach Glenn commented after the game “Tonight we made plays when we needed to make them, our defense and special teams created some offense for us and that was extremely helpful. Our kids are improving and working hard!”


  • Travious Quarles TD Club Player of the Week… Monday it was announced that Thornwell Charters’ Travious Quarles has been selected as the Laurens County Touchdown Club Player of the Week for his performance in the Saints 34-20 win over Clear Dot Academy in Clinton on Friday, 9-15-23… Quarles is a junior RB/DB… Quarles ran the ball 16 times for 102 yards in Thornwell’s win… Quarles had 1 reception for 13 yards and made 5.5 tackles on defense… He also broke up 2 passes and had one interception for the Saints… Head Coach Charlie Washington states “we tried our best to minimize our mistakes. Things from practice this week started to click, and understanding was clear… The Game was well played as a team.” Coach Washington stated, “Travious Quarles was big factor in our win Friday night… He will be honored this Thursday when the TD Club meets at The Ridge at noon… In addition to the local high school coaches reporting on their games, the featured speaker will be Newberry College Head Football Coach Todd Knight.

  •  Updated: Laurens MS 42 – Thornwell 12… The LMS Tigers opened their season last night on the road taking a 42-12 win over the Thornwell Saints over at Thornwell… Damajia Crooks had 4 rushing TDs for the Tigers while Wells Rhodes and Kevin Bryson each had one… Two-point conversions were added by Trent Williams, Logan Bragg and Mason Young… For the Saints Brian Veal scored on a 2 yd. run that was set up by a 72 yd. kickoff return by Elijah Washington… Washington also scored on a 35 yd. TD pass from KJ Thompson near the end of the game.

 Atlanta Braves

  • Phillies 7 – Braves 1… The Braves started a 3-game series with the Phillies in Atlanta last night with a 7-1 loss extending the Braves losing streak to 4 games… Not to worry though as the Braves have already captured the NL East Title and also last night when the Cardinals beat the Brewers that gave the Braves a bye in the first round of the playoffs… The Phillies outhit the Braves 7-4 and 4 of their hits were homers… The braves had 1 homer in the game and that was by Ozzie Albies (31) a solo shot in the first inning.

Greenville Drive…. As you may recall, the Greenville Drive won the SAL League Southern Division Championship last Thursday night taking a 6-3 win in game 2 of the best of three series… That means they started a best of 3 series this weekend with the Hudson Valley Renegades for the SAL Championship.

  • Sunday: Drive 2 – Renegades 0… In the first game of the series the Drive scored 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning up at Hudson Valley and made them hold up as they took a 2-0 win…  The Drive did it playing small ball as there were no homers in the game… The Drive will return home tonight night for game 2 and if they lose game 3 will be Wednesday night at Flour Field.
  • Drive Schedule… The Drive will return home to play the Crawdads in game 2 of the Division series Thursday night and the “if needed” game will be Friday night at Flour Field… To see the Drive’s schedule, click here.

  • Denny Hamlin Wins at BristolDenny Hamlin took the checkered flag in the Cup Series Race at Bristol this past weekend finishing 2.462 seconds ahead of Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell finished third…Click here for more information on the race.
  • Playoff StandingsWilliam Byron and Martin Truex Jr. are now atop the leader board in the Chase for the Cup and the number of drivers remaining in the chase is now down to 12… Michael McDowell, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano were the four drivers eliminated from the chase after the race… To see the complete standings for the playoffs, click here.

  • Laurens County TD Next Meeting September 21st … The Laurens County Touchdown Club kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday, August 24th… The club meets bi-weekly at The Ridge (City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters) at noon for a lunch… Each week the high school coaches will talk about their recent games and upcoming opponents… After the first meeting, there will also be quest speakers… To see a list of who those speakers are scheduled to be for each meeting click here… The TD Club will close out its season on Wednesday, December 6th with its Post Season Awards Banquet… For more information on how to join the club or become a sponsor click here… To go to another part of our website where links to videos of this seasons past meetings, click here… See you there!
