Varsity Football Results from Last Friday Night… If you missed it on my sports Report for Monday, 9-18-23, click here to see a summary of how the four county football teams did last Friday night and when available more stats on the game… A possession-by-possession summary was added to the Laurens at Union game on Monday, 9-15-23.


Clinton HS

  • Girls Tennis: Clinton 5 – Chapin 1… On Monday the Lady Red Devil tennis team hosted the Chapin Eagles on the courts at Clinton MS… Good news for Red Devil fans as the team took a 5-1 win… Taking wins in singles action were Chandler Dailey, Libby Dailey, Kimora Wesley, Carley Macmillan and Addy Derrick….   • Cross Country… On Tuesday the Clinton cross country teams hosted Woodruff and Saluda High School.
    • Boys Finish First… The boys’ cross country team finished first running a “perfect meet”… By that I mean the top 5 finishers were all Red Devils… They are William Reid, Gaga Dominick, Sam Gearheart, Hayden Stinson and Henry Cody in that order… If you would like more information on the boys of the meet including how the other 2 teams finished click here
    • Girls Finish Second… The Lady Red Devils also participated in the meet and they finished second with 30 points to Woodruff’ 25… Rembert like in golf low score win…. The top 2 runners for Clinton were Elizabeth Reid and Skyler Collin who finished first and second in the final results, in that order… Again if you would like more information on the girls of the meet including how the other 2 teams finished click here
  • Zay Johnson Named to Shrine Bowl Team… Monday it was announced that Clinton’s Zay Johnson was named to the roster for the South Carolina team that will participate in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on Saturday, December 16th at Spartanburg HS…  Zay is a senior on the Red Devil varsity football team who was picked as a defensive back and also plays wide receiver… If you would like to see the list of other players named to the South Carolina and North Carolina team, click here to go to the State Newspaper where there is an article about this.

Laurens HS

  • Girls Tennis: Wade Hampton 6 – Laurens 0… The Lady Raider tennis team hosted the Lady Generals o Wade Hampton… All I have is the final score and it is not good news for Raider fans as the Generals took a 6-0 in.

Thornwell

  • Volleyball: Dixie 3 – Saints 1… The Thornwell Saints volleyball team boarded the bus and traveled over to Due West to take on the Green Hornets of Dixie HS… The Saints won the first set 25-23 but then Dixie rebounded to take the next 3 sets 15-25, 12-25 and 18-25 to win the match 3-1.
  • Travious Quarles TD Club Player of the Week… Monday it was announced that Thornwell Charters’ Travious Quarles has been selected as the Laurens County Touchdown Club Player of the Week for his performance in the Saints 34-20 win over Clear Dot Academy in Clinton on Friday, 9-15-23… Quarles is a junior RB/DB… Quarles ran the ball 16 times for 102 yards in Thornwell’s win… Quarles had 1 reception for 13 yards and made 5.5 tackles on defense… He also broke up 2 passes and had one interception for the Saints… Head Coach Charlie Washington states “we tried our best to minimize our mistakes. Things from practice this week started to click, and understanding was clear… The Game was well played as a team.” Coach Washington stated, “Travious Quarles was big factor in our win Friday night… He will be honored this Thursday when the TD Club meets at The Ridge at noon… In addition to the local high school coaches reporting on their games, the featured speaker will be Newberry College Head Football Coach Todd Knight.

 Atlanta Brave

  • Braves 9 – Phillies 3… The Braves snapped their four-game losing streak last night in Atlanta where they took a 9-3 win over the Phillie… The Braves simply outhit the Phillies 13-4 and Ronald Acuna Jr went 3 for 5 with two solo homers… He hit one in the 1st inning and another in the 6th inning to give him 39 homers this season…. Spencer Strider (18-5) got the start and the win pitching 7 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 11 and walking none

Greenville Drive

  • Drive 7 – Hudson Valley Renegade 3… The Greenville Drive won the South Atlantic League (SAL) Championship last night at Flour Field when they took a 7-3 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades to win the best of 3 championship series 2 games to none… The Drive did it outhitting the Renegades 13-6 and they hit 2 homers in the game… The Drive did not end the season with the best overall season record as they went 63-69 while the Hickory Crawdads finished 70-55… As you may recall the Drive finished the first half of the season with a 36-30 record to have the best record in the Southern Division of the SAL in the first half and qualify for the playoffs… In the playoffs they defeated the Crawdads 2 games to 1 to claim the Southern Division Title and then moved on to defeat the Renegades in two straight game to claim the SAL Championship… To be honest, I never thought they would go far in the playoffs but their pitching seemed to come around at the right time and so did the timely hitting… Congratulations to the Drive!
  • Drive Schedule… The Drive will return home to play the Crawdads in game 2 of the Division series Thursday night and the “if needed” game will be Friday night at Flour Field… To see the Drive’s schedule, click here.

NASCAR

Denny Hamlin Wins at BristolDenny Hamlin took the checkered flag in the Cup Series Race at Bristol this past weekend finishing 2.462 seconds ahead of Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell finished third…Click here for more information on the race.

Playoff StandingsWilliam Byron and Martin Truex Jr. are now atop the leader board in the Chase for the Cup and the number of Drivers remaining in the chase is now down to 12… Michael McDowell, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano were the four Drivers eliminated from the chase after the race… To see the complete standings for the playoffs, click here.

  • Laurens County TD Next Meeting September 21st … The Laurens County Touchdown Club kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday, August 24th… The club meets bi-weekly at The Ridge (City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters) at noon for a lunch… Each week the high school coaches will talk about their recent games and upcoming opponents… After the first meeting, there will also be quest speakers… To see a list of who those speakers are scheduled to be for each meeting click here… The TD Club will close out its season on Wednesday, December 6th with its Post Season Awards Banquet… For more information on how to join the club or become a sponsor click here… To go to another part of our website where links to videos of this seasons past meetings, click here… See you there!
