Area Football Games Last Friday Night
- Great Falls 56 – Thornwell 0 …. A week ago last Friday night, the victory bell sounded on the campus of Thornwell as they registered their first win of the season against Clear Dot Academy… Last Friday night the hosted the Red Devils of Great Falls and the Red Devils took the clapper out of the victory bell at the start of the game as they ran the opening kickoff back for a TD and added a 2-point conversion to go up 8-0 with just seconds off the clock and then proceeded to roll over the Saints by a score of 56-0…After that the Red Devils went on and scored 4 rushing TDs, 1 passing TD and another on a fumble recovery… I don’t have any stats on the Saints but by some chance if you want to see the Great Falls stats click here.
- Jefferson Davis Acd. 54 – Laurens Academy 8… The Crusaders traveled to Blackville to take on the Raiders of Jefferson Davis Academy last Friday night and I hate have to report that the Raiders took a 54-8 win over the Crusaders… I don’t have a lot of details on the game but I can tell you that the Raiders had a 34-0 lead at the half and that the Crusaders only score came on special teams as Caleb Hardy returned a kickoff for a TD that I think was 87 yds. long and Garrett Murphy caught the 2-point conversion… The Crusaders only had 110 yds. of total offense and 119 yds. in kickoff returns with Hardy having 102 of them…. - South Aiken 41 – Clinton 30… The Red Devils traveled to South Aiken HS to take on the winless Thoroughbreds last Friday night and the Thoroughbreds were able to pull out a 41-30 win over the Red Devils… The Red Devils went into the game with some key players unavailable as running backs Jayden Robinson and Kason Copeland were lost earlier in the season while linebackers Brett Young and Carson Glenn as well as defensive back / wide out Zay Johnson were more recently lost for the game thus the Red Devils did have some JV players up for the game… Clinton scored first on a 9 yd. run by Javen Cook to make it 6-0 (kick failed)… The two teams went back and forth with South Aiken leading 20-15 at the half and 27-23 at the end of the 3rd quarter… Cook added another rushing TD in the game and DJ Clark also had one… Tyshuwan Richardson connected with Austin Boyd for a 52 yd.TD and Keegan Fortman added a 32 yd. field goal to round out the Red Devil scoring… To see the complete stat package and play-by-by-play accounting of the game click here… The Red Devils open region play this Friday at Wilder Stadium ad they host the Union County Yellow Jackets.
- TL Hanna 48 – Laurens 6… The Raider travel to Anderson take on the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets last Friday night and the Raiders scored the first 6 points of the game on a 1 yd. run by Nick Danciu but that would be all they scored as the Yellow Jackets went on to take a 48-6 win over the Raiders… Hanna dominated the Raiders in just about any statistical category you want to mention and they had 512 yds. of total offense to the Raiders 87 as their defense was relentless the whole game… To see some stats on the game click here and to see a list of scoring plays and a possession-by-possession accounting of the game click here… The 0-6 Raiders return home this Friday night to start their region schedule as they host the Greer Yellow Jackets for Homecoming.
Clinton HS
- UPDATED: JV Football: Clinton 32 – South Aiken 16… The Red Devil JV football team remains undefeated as they took a 36-16 win over South Aiken at Wilder Stadium last Thursday night… South Aiken led 8-6 at the end of the 1st quarter and 16-12 at the half… Clinton rallied to hold the Thoroughbreds scoreless in the second half as they led 24-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter in route to the 32-16 win… Owen Glenn threw 3 TD passes and KJ Vance also there one… Amari Grant caught 3 of the TD passes and PJ McGowan the other… Rhett Gilliam had a rushing TD to round out the Red Devil scoring… Afterwards Coach Glenn stated “Tonight our guys were tested, we were able to make some adjustments and make a comeback in the second half. The defense held them to zero points in the second half. Our receivers made big plays when we needed them. This was a great team win. #GBR”… The team will travel to Union County this Thursday for a 6 pm contest with the Yellow Jackets.

- FBS AP Rankings… The latest AP Ranking (9-17-23) for the FBS Division still has Georgia at #1 and Michigan #2… Texas moved up a spot to #3 while Florida State moved down a spot to #4… Southern Cal moved remains # 5 last…Spots 6-10 are occupied by Ohio State, Penn State, Washington, Notre dame and Oregon… Clemson continues to be out of the top 25 and would be #26 … To see the entire top 25 click here.

Atlanta Brave… The Braves completed their series with the Nationals up in DC over the weekend… As you may recall I told you last Friday that they took 10-3 win over the Nationals on Thursday.
- Friday: Braves 9 – Nationals 6… The Braves continued their winning way on Friday as they took a 9-6 win over the Nationals by outhitting them 9-6… The nationals had no homers in the game but the Braves had 3… In the first inning Ronald Acuna Jr hit his 40th homer of the season and in doing so became the first player in modern MLB history to hit 40 homers and steal 60 bases in a season… Austin Riley (37) also had a 2-run homer in the 1st inning and Marcel Ozuna (36) a three-run shot in the 7th inning.
- Sunday, Game 1: Nationals 3 – Braves 2… The Braves and the Nationals were rained out on Saturday which forced them to play a doubleheader on Sunday… In the first game the Nationals took a 3-2 win…They did so by outhitting the Braves 10-6… The Braves had one homer in the game when in the top of the 9th inning Sean Murphy (21) had a solo homer as the Braves tried to rally but just fell short.
- Sunday, Game 2: Braves 8 – Nationals 5… In the final game on Sunday, the Nationals outhit the Braves 12-10 but that is not what counts as the Braves took an 8-5 win… Both teams had 2 homeruns and the Brave homeruns were by Kevin Pillar (8) and Forest Walls (1) both two-run homers… By the way that was the 100th win of the season for the Braves as they are now 100-56 on the season and will have the night off as they return to Atlanta to start a 6-game home stand to end the regular season.

- William Byron Wins at Texas Motor Speedway… William Byron took the lead on a restart with 6 laps to go Sunday at the Texas Motor Speedway and then held on for the victory holding off Ross Chastain who finished second…Click here for more information on the race.
- Playoff Standings… William Byron continues to lead in the Chase for the Cup but Denny Hamlin has moved up to second replacing Martin Truex Jr. who was second place last week but drops to #5 this week… To see the complete standings for the playoffs, click here.
- NASCAR on TV This Week… The Cup Series Race will take place at the Talladega Superspeedway this Sunday at 2:00 pm… There will be TV viewing this week of past races, practices, qualifying and other items on TV… To see the TV schedule, click here.

- Laurens County TD Next Meeting October 5th… The Laurens County Touchdown Club kicked off the 2023 season on Thursday, August 24th… The club meets bi-weekly at The Ridge (City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters) at noon for a lunch… Each week the high school coaches will talk about their recent games and upcoming opponents… After the first meeting, there will also be quest speakers… To see a list of who those speakers are scheduled to be for each meeting click here… The TD Club will close out its season on Wednesday, December 6th with its Post Season Awards Banquet… For more information on how to join the club or become a sponsor click here… To go to another part of our website where links to videos of this seasons past meetings, click here… See you there!
