Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Kadon Crawford named TD Club Player of the Week… When the Laurens County TD Club selects its Player of the Week, they receive nominations from the four local high school coaches as who they think the is worthy of the award on their team from the previous Friday night’s game… It is not that unusual for someone to win the award more than one time a season buy highly unusual for the same player to win it for two consecutive weeks… Well that has happened this week as Clinton’s Kadon Crawford has been selected for the second consecutive week… The senior linebacker and tight end/wide receiver and special teams player was chosen for his performance in the Red Devils 51-28 win over Union County last Friday at Wilder Stadium… Crawford set a new Clinton High School record for yards receiving in a game with 191 yards on seven receptions…  Crawford had a 44 yard TD reception as well as a 50 yard catch to set up another Red Devil score…  Defensively, Crawford recorded a Safety and had 7 tackles for loss and well as 3 quarterback pressures and 1 sack… Head Coach Corey Fountain stated, “Kadon continues to be a leader on and off the field.  He is a great competitor, he’s everywhere on the field and his relentlessness rubs off on the other players on the team.”… He will be honored this Thursday at the TD Clubs meeting at noon at The Ridge on Exchange Drive… In addition to the local coaches speaking, the featured speaker will be Coach Mike Ayers, former head football coach at Wofford College.

  • Updated JV Football: Clinton 48 – Union County 8… The Red Devil JV football team took a 48-8 win over Union County at Union last Thursday night at Union… Clinton led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter and 28-8 at the half as they rolled on t0 the 48-8 win…I can also now tell you that in the game Angelo Comer had rushing TD and recovered a fumble for a TD… Also scoring 1 rushing TD each were KJ Vance, Javen James, PJ McGowan and Lincoln Alexander… About the game Coach Glenn commented “Our kids prepared well this week and we were able to come out and with a big win…Our defense played well and the offence made big plays throughout the night”…The Red Devils remain undefeated on the season and will host Woodruff this Thursday at 6:30 pm.

Thornwell

  • Volleyball: Thornwell 3 – Calhoun Falls 0…I need to do some catching up with the Thornwell volleyball team… Last Thursday they traveled to Calhoun Fall and there is good news as they took a 3-0 win over the Blue Flashes… Sorry but I don’t have any other details on the match but I can tell you they are now 7-4 on the season and are scheduled to host the SC School for the Deaf and Blind this Thursday at 5:30 pm.

Atlanta Braves… The Braves finished out their regular season schedule hosting the Washington Nationals this weekend in a three-game series in Atlanta.

  • Friday: Nationals 10 – Braves 6… The Braves started the series on a down note as the Nationals took a 10-6 win… The Nationals outhit the Braves 10-6 and 5 of their hits were homers while the Braves had none… One other note about the game, Ronald Acuna Jr. stole 2 more bases in the game to give him 72 on the season to tie the modern day Braves franchise record set by Otis Nixon back in 1991… By the way Nixon had no homers I believe that season, can we say MVP!
  • Saturday: Braves 5 – Nationals 3… The Braves rebounded on Saturday and took a 5-3 win over the Nationals… They outhit the Nationals 11-10 and the Nationals did have 2 errors… Marcell Ozuna has a 3-run homer in the 5th inning to give him 38 on the season… Ronald Acuna Jr. decoded to go ahead and break Otis Nixon’s single season modern day rea record of stolen bases in a season as he stole his 73rd… Spencer Strider (20-5) got the start and the win which was his 20th win of the season… He also struck out 7 in just 5 innings of work which gives him 281 strikeouts in 186⅔ innings which topped John Smoltz’s 276 in 253⅔ innings back in 196 when Smoltz won the National League Cy Young Award.
  • Sunday: Nationals 10 – Braves 9… The Braves finished their regular season Sunday afternoon with a 10-9loss to the Nationals down in Atlanta… The game went back and forth and the Braves actually le 8-7 at the end of 8 innings but the Nationals got 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning and the Braves could only get 1 in the bottom of the inning to make the final 10-9… Marcell Ozuna finished on a positive note as he had 2 homers in the game to give him 40 this season.

NASCAR

  • Ryan Blaney Wins at Talladega SuperspeedwayRyan Blaney finished about a foot ahead of Kevin Harvick at Talladega Sunday to win the Cup Series race… Just before they crossed the finish line there was a massive wreck behind them that scrambled a lot of cars… Now this was a double-heartbreaking loss for Harvick who has announced his retirement after this race… The reason I say double-heartbreaking is that after the race something about the windshield of his car was found to be out of specs by NASCAR rules so his second place finish became a last place finish…Click here for more information on the race.
  • Playoff StandingsWilliam Byron continues to lead in the Chase for the Cup but Ryan Blaney has moved up to second replacing Denny Hamlin who was second place last… To see the complete standings for the playoffs, click here.
