Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Baseball: Woodruff 4 – Clinton 3… The Red Devils hosted the Woodruff Wolverines last night in regions action… It was a game that saw the Red Devils jump out to an early and led 3-2 going into the top of the 7th inning….There the Wolverines scored 2 runs and then held the Red Devils scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 win… The Wolverines scored their 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning on a 2 RBI single with 2 outs… The Red Devils scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning without a hit taking advantage of a couple of Wolverine errors and a hit batter… Their other run was scored in the 3rd inning and 2 hit batters and a walk helped the Red Devils score their final run… Woodruff outhit the Red Devils 4-2 and Zane McLendon and Luke Young had the 2 hits for the Red Devils… Carson Glen went 6 innings for the Red Devils giving up the 3 runs (only 2 were earned) on 3 hits while striking out 8 and walking 2… McLendon pitched the last 3 outs…. The Red Devils are 5-5 overall and 1-1 in region play…They are scheduled to travel to Woodruff tomorrow (Friday) for a 6:30 game.
  • Golf Wins Tri-Match… The Red Devil golf team was in action on Tuesday this week as they hosted Broome and Union… Good news once again as the Red Devils shot a 173 to defeat Broome (184) and Union (198)… Like McMurray led the Red Devils with a 40… Aiden Bragg shot a 43, Gabi Carles 45 and Josh Rochester 45… Broome’s Alex Weathers was the Match Medalist shooting 29… For a little more information on this match, click here.

Laurens HS

  • Softball Greer 7 – Raiders 3… The Raider softball team traveled up to Greer last night making up a game with the Yellow Jackets postponed from Tuesday night… The Yellow Jackets scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning but the Raiders tied it with 3 of their own in the 5th inning only to have the Jackets score 3 runs in the bottom of the inning as they went on to take a 7-3 win over the Raiders… The Yellow Jackets simply outhit the Raiders 12-5… No Raider had more than 1 hit but Carl Edwards one hit was a 3-run homer in the 5th inning….Summer Nations took the complete game loss giving up the 7 earned runs on 12 hits while striking out 6 and walking just 1… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored… The team is now 5-3 overall and are scheduled to travel to Woodruff today for a 6:00 pm game with the Wolverines.
  • Baseball: Greer 2 – Raiders 0… The Raider baseball team also traveled to Greer last night to take on the Yellow Jackets… For the first time this season the Raiders failed to score a run as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 win… They scored 1 run in the 1st inning on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and the other run in the 4th inning on an RBI double… The Raiders actually outhit the Yellow Jackets 6-4 and threatened a couple of times but just could not get the clutch hit when needed… Hunter Nabors was the only Raider with more than 1 hit as he went 2 for 3 with a double… Asher Goss pitched the complete game for the Raiders giving up the 2 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 13 and walking 5… Luke Godfrey got the win for the Yellow Jackets giving up no runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking none… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored… The Raiders are now 12-3 on the season and 4-1 in region play and will host the Yellow Jackets tomorrow (Friday) night at 6:30 in the tie-breaking game of the three-game series with the Yellow Jackets.

 


Thornwell

  • Baseball: Dixie 21 – Saints 0 (3)… The other day I told you about the Saints taking a 20-2 win over the McCormick Chiefs on Monday…  Tuesday night the shoe was on the other foot as the Saints traveled to Dixie and lost to the Green Hornets by a score of 21-0… Dixie scored 6 runs in the 1st inning and 15 in the 2nd to take the 3 inning win… The reason is simple, Dixie outhit the Saints 11-0 and 4 of the Dixie hits were doubles  plus 4 Saint pitchers walked 8 batters and managed to hit over 5 Dixie batters… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.

 March Madness has Arrived… On Sunday (3-17-24) the NCAA announced the brackets for both the men and women teams that will be participating in the chase for the National Championship we call March Madness

    • Oregon 87 – South Carolina 73The Gamecocks went one-and-done in the tournament as they lost to Oregon Thursday night by a score of 87-73… For more information about this game, click on the score at the beginning of this section.
    • Clemson Wins 2 and Headed to Sweet 16
      • Clemson 77 – New Mexico 56… Last Friday (3-22) the Tigers defeated the Lobos of New Mexico 77-56 in first round action in the NCAA Basketball Tournament
      • Clemson 72 – Baylor 64… Then on Sunday (3-24) the Tigers held off a stubborn Baylor Bears team taking a 72-64 win and thus advancing to the sweet 16 where they will be playing the Arizona Wildcats at 7:09 pm this Thursday (3-28) on CBS… Arizona was seeded # 2 in the West Bracket and Clemson a #6 seed… To see a comparison of some key stats of these two teams click here.
    • College of Charleston
      • Alabama 109 – College of Charleston 96… Last Friday (3-22) the College of Charleston Cougars found themselves trailing Alabama 51-34 at the end of one half of play and did mount a comeback attempt in the second half outscoring Alabama 62-58 but it was not enough as the Crimson Tide took a 109-96 win.

    • Presbyterian 49 – Sacred Heart 42… The Lady Blue Hose basketball team took a 49-42 win over the Pioneer of sacred Heart last night down in Columbia Wednesday night to continue their historic season making it to the field of 64… If you want more details on this game, click on the score at the start or click here….     • South Carolina
      • South Carolina 91 – PC 39Last Friday (3-22) the Gamecocks ended PC’ from the tournament by taking a 91-39 win over the Blue Hose… PC has nothing to be ashamed of as they did beat Sacred Heart but then had to play the #1 ranked team in the nation.
      • South Carolina 88 – North Carolina 41The on Sunday the Gamecocks demolished the Tar Heels of North Carolina beating them 88-41… Like I said above, when you see this score you realize PC had nothing to be ashamed of… The Gamecocks move on to the Sweet 16 taking on Indiana which defeated Oklahoma 75-68 game played Monday, 3-25… They will travel to Albany, NY for that game this Friday (3-29) with tipoff scheduled for 5:00 pm and it can be seen on ESPN.

Atlanta Braves Opener Postponed… The Atlanta Braves were to have opened their season on the road today up in Philadelphia… However bad weather has postponed that game until tomorrow (Friday) at 3:05 pm…  If you would like to see the Braves, click here… I believe Bally Sports South will be televising the game.

NASCAR

  • William Byron Wins Second Race of the SeasonWilliam Byron became the first NASCAR driver to win more than one Cup Series race this season as he took the win at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas road course Sunday, holding off the field by less than a second… This was his 12th Cup Series win of his career… Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.
  • Standings… Martin Truex Jr. now leads the Driver standings in the Cup Series while last week’s leader as Kyle Larson drops down to fifth… Ty Gibbs checks in at #2 and Ryan Blaney at #3… To see the driver standings for the Cup Series click here… Once you get there you can also click on links to see the standings in Xfinity and Truck Series.

NFL

  • New Rule Changes Include Major Kickoff Change… The NFL recently approved a series of rule changes for the upcoming season with the kickoff rule change being very different than what we are used to and very interesting… It involves placement of the majority of the players until the kicked ball is touched or hits the ground in the receiving are… Rather than me trying to explain it, click here where there is a better explanation than I can give plus a chart or two to help explain it… I’m looking forward to see how this works out.

Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame… Recently the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame announced the five members of its fifth class which will be inducted on Thur., April 25th at Laurens County Museum on courthouse square at 6:30 pm… The five new members are Robert Wilder, Anthony Downs, Charles Peterson, Walter Todd and Jean Hammond Whitfield… Now to read more about each of the inductees and to learn how they were chosen click here… You will also find out who the members of the first four classes were as well as general information about the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame… Tickets are now on sale for $30 and include a catered meal… To purchase your ticket, click hereNo tickets will be sold at the door.
