Laurens HS
- Baseball: Raiders 3 – Easley 2… The Laurens Raider baseball team opened up the best of 3 series with the Easley Green Wave with a 3-2 win at Ed Prescott Field last night… The game was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning when pinch hitter Avery Madden led things off with a single and Zee Williams reentered the game to take his place at first…The next Rader popped out to right field and then Hunter Nabors was hit by a pitch… An error then allowed Bennett Edwards to reach first and thus loaded the bases… The next Raider struck out… Coleman Coker then drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to bring in Zee Williams with the winning run… The raiders opened the scoring putting 2 runs on the board in the 1st inning… The first run scored during a ground-out and the second run came in when Jireh Brown drew a bases loaded walk with 2 outs… Easley scored one of their runs in the 4th inning and the other in the 5th… The Green Wave actually outhit the Raiders 6-2 but the Raiders took full advantage of 2 Green Wave errors and 5 walks issued by 4 Easley pitchers… Josh Hughes took the win as he pitched the last 2 innings in relief of Asher Goss… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.
- Up Next for the Raiders Baseball Team… The Raiders now travel to Easley tomorrow (Wednesday) night for a 6:30 pm game and can close out the series with a win… Should Easley win game 3 will be at Laurens on Friday at 6:30…To see the Class AAAA Baseball Bracket click here.
Laurens Academy
- Softball… The Crusader softball team started and finished their participation in the SCISA Class A Softball Tournament this weekend.
- Friday: Jeff Davis 17 – Laurens Academy 1… The Crusaders started their participation in the tournament Friday afternoon taking in the Raiders of Jefferson Davis Academy… The Crusaders ran into a tough pitcher as the Raiders Regan Still held the Crusaders to just 2 hits as the Raiders took a 17-1 win over the Crusaders to drop them into the losers’ bracket in the tournament… She struck out 15 and walked just 1… The Crusaders also helped the Raiders committing 9 errors so that only 2 of the Raider runs were earned… Olivia Huck and Madison Loe had the 2 hits for the Crusaders and Huck’s was a triple that drove in the crusaders only run… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.
- Friday, Game 2: Crusaders 10 – Richard Winn 0… In a second game on Friday the Crusaders took on the Richard Winn Eagles in and elimination game… Good news here as the Crusaders took a 10-0 win… Olivia Huck pitched a no hitter for the Crusaders striking out 8 and walking only 2 batters which kept her from pitching a perfect game… The Crusaders played much better on defense with only 2 errors while the Eagles had 2… The Crusaders had 10 hits in the game with Madeline Baldwin getting 3 of them while Olivia Huck and Abby Howard had 2 each… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.
- Saturday, Game 1: Crusaders 12 – Wardlaw 11… The Crusaders returned to action Saturday morning taking on the Wardlaw Patriots… The Crusaders took an early lead but the Patriots came back to tie the game 11-11 going into the top of the 7th inning… The Crusaders held the Patriots scoreless in the top of the 7th inning and then with 2 outs in the bottom of the inning Madeline Baldwin singled driving in Lillie Davenport for the walk-off win… The Crusaders outhit the Patriots 12-8 Olivia Huck and Baldwin each getting 3 hits in the game… Only 5 of the Patriots runs were earned as the Crusaders had 8 errors but the Patriots also had 5 errors so that only 10 of the Crusader errors were earned… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.
- Saturday Game 2: Cross 4 – Crusaders 3… The Crusaders saw their season come to an end in the second game on Saturday as the Cross Schools Stingrays out of Bluffton, SC took a walk-off 4-3 win over the Crusaders… The Crusaders led 3-0 after 3 innings of play and 3-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning… In the bottom of the 7th, the Stingray leadoff hitter reached on an error… Olivia Huck then struck the next batter out only to give up back-to-back singles which allowed the stingrays to score the 2 winning runs… The Crusaders actually outhit the Stingrays 8-6 but also out “errored” them 4-3… The Crusaders were led at the plate by Madison Loe who had 2 hits one of which was a double and drove in a run and Catherine Riddle who also had 2 hits… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored…The Crusaders finished the season with a 10-6 record including playoffs… Congratulations to the Crusaders on making the playoffs and getting a good run into the playoffs!

- D-1 Rankings… The latest college baseball rankings according to D1BASEBALL.COM TOP 25 came out on 5-4-24… The top 5 are (previous spot in parenthesis): Tennessee (3), (1), Clemson (4), Texas A&M (1), Kentucky (8) and Arkansas (2)… South Carolina checked in at #13 (15)… If you wish to see the entire top 25 according to the poll click here.

College Softball
- 2024 D-I Softball Championship… In case you missed it Sunday night, the field of 64 that will be playing for the DI-I was announced… Good news for Clemson, South Carolina and USC Upstate fans as those 3 teams form the State of South Carolina have all made the field… The teams were placed in one of 16 regionals…. Clemson will be playing in the Tuscaloosa Regional along with Alabama, Southeaster Louisiana and USC Upstate… Clemson will take on Southeastern Louisiana at 2:00 pm Friday (5-17) and USC Upstate will take on #14 nationally seeded Alabama at 4:30 on Friday… The Gamecocks will be playing in the Durham Regional… Other teams in that regional are #10 nationally seeded Duke, Morgan State and Utah… The Gamecocks will also open play on Friday (5-17) taking on Utah at noon… If you click here it will carry you to a posting on the NCAA website where there is a lot more information about the teams such as how many from each conference… Guess which conference placed the most teams in the field of 64… If you said the SEC you would be correct as they have 13 of the 64 teams.

- Braves 2 – Cubs 0… The Braves started a 3-game series with the Chicago Cubs last night on a positive note by taking a 2-0 win in Atlanta… The Braves scored both of their runs in the 6th inning when Zack Short (who is playing third for an injured Austin Riley) singled driving in Travis d’Arnaud and then Ronald Acuna Jr singled driving in Short.

- Drive At Home Tonight… The Greenville Drive were off last night and will start a 6-game series with the Winston –Salem Dash tonight at Flour Field… After winning the last two series, the Drive are now 15-18 on the season and in a tie for third place in the SAL South with the Winston-Salem Dash 3 games behind the division leading Rome Braves who are 17-14 on the season.

NASCAR
- Brad Keselowski Finally Wins Again… For the first time in almost 13 years, Brad Keselowski saw the checkered flag wave for him in the Cup Series race in Darlington last Sunday… He had 35 Cup Series wins before Sunday but just had not been able to break into the top spot for quite some time… Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.
- Standings… Kyle Larson still leads the Driver Standings in the Cup Series while Martin Truex Jr. remains second… Denny Hamlin moved up to third while Chase Elliot dropped to fourth…To see the driver standings for the Cup Series click here… Once you get there you can also click on links to see the standings in Xfinity and Truck Series using tabs in the upper right corner of the posting.

Ticketing Information for Playoff Games and Matches… A quick reminder that only South Carolina High School: League passes will be accepted for admission for all post-season contests…. No school or season passes will be accepted…. No exceptions… Further in most all cases admission will be $8.00 and everyone must have a ticket… All these are SCHSL rules.
