Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Guzman Signs to Wrestle at PC… Early Wednesday afternoon Red Devil senior wrestler Sandro Guzman signed a letter of intent to continue his education while wrestling at Presbyterian College… He has only wrestled for 2 years and has made so much improvement over those 2 years that he was named the team’s Most Improved Player for this past season for the Red Devils who finished second in the region behind Chester… If you click here, it will take you to a short video interview done with him after the signing where he talks about several things including career goals… Congratulations to Sandro!


Laurens HS

  • Zay Pulley Earns Golden Glove Award… For the last 9 year Diamond Prospects has announced its Golden Glove Team and Mr. Golden Glove… This year that top honor goes to Laurens center fielder Zay Pulley as he was names Mr. Golden Glove yesterday… Pulley had 67 total chances in the outfield 57 of which resulted in an out… He also had 7 assist and one double play and only 3 errors… A catch he made at home against James Island going to his right and stretching out and catching the ball to make an out was one that should be on his highlight reel… To see who else make DP’s Golden Glove Team and more about Zay, click here… Congratulations to Zay on this award!
  • Spring Football Game Updated… It was brought to my attention that the original video had a sound problem… Hopefully it is now corrected….The Laurens Raiders held their spring game at KC Hanna last Thursday night… It was a spirited workout with a lot of enthusiasm on display… The Raiders will host the Hillcrest Rams August 23 in the opening game of the season… Click here to see a video interview with Coach Porter and some photos.
  • Kiddie Cheer Camp… Once again this summer the Raider cheerleaders and coaches will be having a Kiddie Cheer Camp… The camp is for youth 4-12 and it will be held starting on Monday June 17th and ending on Wednesday, June 19th… The camp will start at 9:00 am on those days and end at noon in the LDHS main gym… The cost is $60 per camper and if a camper has a sibling that wants to attend the cost is only $100 for both campers…  You can register and pay for the camp by clicking here… If you have any questions about this camp, contact Coach Erin Patterson at the following email address: eopatterson@laurens55.org… This camp has always been a camp where the campers have a lot of fun while picking up some valuable pointers about cheering.
  • Raider Football Camp… The Laurens Raider football team and coaches will also be conducting a camp this summer starting on Monday, June 24th and ending on Thursday, Thursday, June 27th… This camp is for youth who will be in grades 2 – 9 this next school year… The camp will be held at KC Hanna Stadium between the hour of 8:00 am and 11:30 am…  The cost is $50 per camper and you can bay for the camp online by clicking here… For a little more information about this camp click here… If you still have questions about the camp email Coach Greg Porter at: gsporter@laurens55.org

 College Baseball

  • 2024 NCAA Division Brackets AnnouncedYesterday the NCAA Division I baseball Committee announced the complete field of 64 trying to make it to the College World Series (CWS) and place them in one of the 16 regionals… The Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads the way with a record 11 teams selected from the conference making the playoffs while the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has eight teams in the field… To read more about this in a posting on the NCA website click here… Regionals will start this Friday and if you would like to see the teams and schedule for each regional click here… When you do you will find 16 different pages (one for each regional) so scroll down to find the regional you are interested in… YV viewing opportunity is also on each regional schedule…  As for local teams:
    • Wofford… The Terroirs will be playing in the regional in Chapel Hill where North Carolina is the #1 seed… They will play #2 seeded LSU at noon on Friday
    • Clemson… The Tigers are hosting a regional and are the #1 seed in it… They will take on High Point at 7:00 pm Friday… Coastal Carolina is a #3 seed in the regional and will take on #2 seeded Vanderbilt at noon Friday.
    • South Carolina… The Gamecocks will be in Raleigh where NC State is the #1 seed and will take on Bryant at 7:00 pm on Friday… The Gamecocks are the #2 seed and will take on James Madison at 2:00 pm Friday.

  • Final 8 Set… The final 8 teams that will compete in the 2024 NCAA DI Women’s College World Series is now set… The 8 teams are: Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Stanford, Duke and Alabama… The CWS which is held in Oklahoma City starting this Thursday (5-30-14)….   • Nationals 7 – Braves 2… Last night down in Atlanta the Washington National took a 7-2 win over the Braves outhitting them 13-8… The Braves scored their first run in the 3rd inning when Marcell Ozuna singled driving in Ozzie Albies… The Braves scored their last run in the 6th inning when Matt Olson scored during a ground out by Travis d’Arnaud… The Braves started Spencer Schwellenbach last night a right hand pitcher they called up from their AA club in Mississippi… He went 5 innings in his MLB debut giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 5 and walking just 1… Four other Brave pitchers finished the game combined doing worse than Schwellenbach… The two teams will finish the series tonight.
  • Braves AA Pitcher Called Up… With the loss of Ronald Acuna Jr and the 6-8 week loss of pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver the Braves are calling up their #3 prospect right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach from Mississippi… For more on him and other Atlanta moves, click here and click here.
  • Braves Lose Acuna for the Season… Before the game yesterday the Braves found out that they had suffered a loss before the game even started… It was announced that Ronald Acuna Jr. will be out the rest of the season as he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Sunday in Pittsburg… For much more on this story click here.

  • Emperors 10 – Drive 8The Greenville Drive scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning last night at Flour Field in their game with the Rome Emperors but could not hold it as the Emperors came all the way back to take a 10-8 win scoring what would prove to be the winning run in the 6th inning… As you might guess, a lot of hits in the game with the Emperors getting 10 of them to the Drives 8… Kristian Campbell did have a solo homer for the Drive in the 8th inning.  .

  • Bill Walton Passes… Monday NBA Hall of Famer and star of some great UCLA teams under legendary Coach John Wooden passed away at the age of 71… For more on this, click here to go to the NBA website where there is a posting about this… His former teammate at Boston Larry Bird had some comments on his passing after losing his battle with cancer… To see those, click here.

NASCAR

  • Christopher Bell Wins at CharlotteIn what was supposed to be a 400 lap race up at Charlotte last Sunday, Christopher Bell took the win after only 249 laps were completed… Seems that Mother Nature wanted to show off and the cars did not have water-wings our motors suitable for racing in the water so NASCAR called it quits… He was the dominant racer during the race and held off Brad Keselowski at the end… Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.
  • Standings… Denny Hamlin now leads the Drive Cup Standings with 492 points with Martin Truex Jr is right behind with 487… Kyle Larson dropped to third wait 486 points…To see the driver standings for the Cup Series click here… Once you get there you can also click on links to see the standings in Xfinity and Truck Series using tabs in the upper right corner of the posting.

 Summer Camps at Clinton YMCA… The Clinton YMCA has released their schedule of Summer Youth Sports Camps for this year… To see a list of those camps including dates, location, times and cost click here… These cams do have registration deadlines and you register at the Clinton YMCA… The next camps are:

  • Baseball at CHS… This camp will be June 3-5 and will be held at the CHS baseball field from 9:00 to 11:30 am each day… This camp is for boys ages 6-12 and will be conducted by Coach Peyton Spangler… The cost is $40 for YMCA members and $50 for non-members… The deadline to register is Friday, May 31 @ 4:00 pm.
  • Soccer Camp at PC… This camp will be June 5-7 at the PC intramural Field from 9:00 am to 11:00 am… It is open to boys and girls ages 6-12 and will be conducted by Coach Tania Harris… The cost is $50 for YMCA members and $60 for non-members… The deadline to register is Monday, June 3 @ 4:00 pm
