Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • New Coaches at Clinton HS… Recently Clinton HS athletic director Louie Alexander announced some changes in coaching position at Clinton HS for next school year.
    • Baseball – Peyton Spangler…  Peyton Spangler a 2015 Clinton HS graduate and current assistant on the baseball team has been named the new head baseball coach… He is a 2019 graduate of Newbery College where he received a BS degree in Physical Education… He has been at Clinton HS since 2019 where he teaches health and PE… As a baseball player ay Clinton he was a North-South All-Star game participant and Laurens County Baseball Player of the Year in 2015… He also has served as a coach in the American Legion baseball program… While an assistant at Clinton HS he has helped guide the Red Devils to 3 region championships (21-23) and the State Championship in 2023… Good Luck to Coach Spangler!
    • Volleyball- Danielle Delio… Danielle Delio will be taking over as the head volleyball coach for the Red Devils next season… She is currently a biology teacher at Clinton HS and has been an assistant on the varsity team and head JV volleyball coach… She has a BS degree in Physical Education from Lander where she helped to found a competitive club volleyball team in 2017… She also has a master’s in Coaching and Athletic Management for Columbia College… She taught PE at Gray Court-Owings where she also served as the school’s athletic director until she received her teaching certification in Biology and came to Clinton HS.
    • JV Volleyball – Brooke O’Shields… Brooke O’Shields has also been named to replace Mrs. Delio as JV volleyball coach and also be an assistant on the varsity volleyball team… She is a 2013 graduate of Clinton HS and has previously taught at Newberry HS before returning home to Clinton HS this past season… Congratulations and good luck to both these ladies as they take over the Red Devil Volleyball teams next season!   Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • LDHS Cheerleading Car Wash Fund Raiser… This Saturday (June 8th), the Raider cheerleaders will be holding a carwash at Gregory’s Car Wash located at 1220 N. Harper Street… They will be washing vehicles between noon and 2:00 pm… The cost is $20 for cars and $25 for Trucks and SUVs… All proceed go to help funding the Cheerleading Program at LDHS for things like travel expenses, competition entry fees, competitive uniform replacements and other expenses that come up in helping to make the cheerleading program one of the best.
  • Kiddie Cheer Camp… Once again this summer the Raider cheerleaders and coaches will be having a Kiddie Cheer Camp… The camp is for youth 4-12 and it will be held starting on Monday June 17th and ending on Wednesday, June 19th… The camp will start at 9:00 am on those days and end at noon in the LDHS main gym… The cost is $60 per camper and if a camper has a sibling that wants to attend the cost is only $100 for both campers…  You can register and pay for the camp by clicking here… If you have any questions about this camp, contact Coach Erin Patterson at the following email address: eopatterson@laurens55.org… This camp has always been a camp where the campers have a lot of fun while picking up some valuable pointers about cheering.
  • Raider Football Camp… The Laurens Raider football team and coaches will also be conducting a camp this summer starting on Monday, June 24th and ending on Thursday, Thursday, June 27th… This camp is for youth who will be in grades 2 – 9 this next school year… The camp will be held at KC Hanna Stadium between the hour of 8:00 am and 11:30 am…  The cost is $50 per camper and you can bay for the camp online by clicking here… For a little more information about this camp click here… If you still have questions about the camp email Coach Greg Porter at: gsporter@laurens55.org

South Carolina Says Goodbye to Mark Kingston… In case you missed it on the news last night, yesterday just before noon it was announced that Mark Kingston will not be coming back as head baseball coach for the Gamecocks next season… He was hired back in 2018 and his teams had a 217-155 record…  His teams reached a super regional twice and into the NCAA playoffs a total of 4 times… Former Clemson coach Monte Lee has been named the interim head coach as Ray Tanner starts hos search for a new baseball coach… The State Newspaper has a very good story about this with much more information than I have posted here… Click here to go to that story on the State website.

  • 2024 NCAA CWS BracketsThe NCAA Division I Baseball regionals started Friday 5-31 and have now reached the field of 16 as super Regional play begins this weekend…Half the Super Regionals will begin on Friday and the other half on Saturday… They all are the best of 3 series with the winners advancing to the CWS next weekend… If you want to see an interactive bracket for the playoffs by regional click here….   • Final 2 Set… The women’s College World Series in softball is down to the final two teams… They are Texas and Oklahoma… These two teams will start a best of 3 series tonight to see who gets to claim the top spot… The game tonight will start at 8:00 pm and can be seen on ESPN… Oklahoma has won the championship the last 3 consecutive years and is the favorite… Oklahoma had a 20 game winning streak in the playoffs snapped by Florida on Monday when the Gators took a 9-3 win… Oklahoma came back yesterday and defeated Florida 6-5 to make the finals.   For a look at the interactive bracket for the tournament, click here and it will carry you to the NCAA website where they have the bracket posted… It is an interactive bracket posting in that you can click on the matchups you are interested in and it will open up to show the schedule for that part of the bracket, game times, TV availability and scores once the games are completed

  • Braves 8 –Red Sox 3… The Braves started a road trip last night in Boston taking on the Red Sox… Good news for casual Brave fan as they took an 8-3 win… The Braves only outhit the Red Sox 8-5 with Ozzie Albies leading the way going 2 for 4 with a 3-run homer in the 6th inning his fourth homer of the season… Orlando Arcia also went 2-4 with a solo homer in the 7th inning his 6th homer of the year… Max Fried (6-2) picked up the win going 7 strong innings giving up the 3 runs (only 2 of which were earned) on 4 hits (one of which was a solo homer by Dominic Smith in the 3rd inning) while striking out 13 and walking just 1…. The Braves and the Red Sox finish the short 2-game series tonight in Boston.

  • Crawdads 5 – Drive 3… The Greenville Drive started a 6-game series with the Hickory Crawdads last night up in Hickory, NC on less than a stellar note as they fell by a score of 5-3…The Crawdads put 3 runs on the scoreboard in the first 2 innings and held the Drive scoreless until the 7th inning…  Jhostynxon Garcia (2) the Drive’s right fielder did have a solo home in the 8th inning.

NASCAR

  • Austin Cindric Wins at Cup RaceSunday at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, it looked like the race was Ryan Blaney’s to lose as he had a good lead with 2 laps to do… Well that is just what he did (lose) as he ran out of gas on the Next-to-last lap and coasted on to the finish line finishing 24th with Austin Cindric blowing past him to take the win…  Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.
  • Standings… Denny Hamlin still leads the Driver Cup Standings with 530 points with Kyle Larson moving up to second with 513 points… The rest of the top 5 are Chase Elliott (507), Martin Truex, Jr (490) and William Byron fifth with 488 points…To see the driver standings for the Cup Series click here… Once you get there you can also click on links to see the standings in Xfinity and Truck Series using tabs in the upper right corner of the posting.

This & That:

 Summer Camps at Clinton YMCA… The Clinton YMCA has released their schedule of Summer Youth Sports Camps for this year… To see a list of those camps including dates, location, times and cost click here… These cams do have registration deadlines and you register at the Clinton YMCA… The next camps are:

  • Basketball Camp… This camp will be June 10-12 in the YMCA gym from 9:30 am to 11:30 am… It is open to boys and girls ages 6-12 and will be conducted by Coach Eddie Romines… The cost is $40 for YMCA members and $50 for non-members… The deadline to register is Friday, June 7 @ 4:00 pm
  • Softball Camp… This camp will be June 17-19 in the YMCA field from 9:00 am to 11:30 am… It is open to girls ages 7-12 and will be conducted by Coach Matt Davis and Jennifer Lawson… The cost is $40 for YMCA members and $50 for non-members… The deadline to register is Friday, June 14 @ 4:00 pm
