Clinton HS

  • CHS Athletic Booster Club… It’s not too early to think about joining the CHS Athletic Booster Club for next season… To learn more about the booster club and its benefits, click here… That will carry you to a form where more information is available and you can also print out and use that form to join the booster club… They really do help all the sports put the “Go” in Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Raider Football Camp… The Laurens Raider football team and coaches will also be conducting a camp this summer starting on Monday, June 24th and ending on Thursday, Thursday, June 27th… This camp is for youth who will be in grades 2 – 9 this next school year… The camp will be held at KC Hanna Stadium between the hour of 8:00 am and 11:30 am…  The cost is $50 per camper and you can pay for the camp online by clicking here… For a little more information about this camp click here… If you still have questions about the camp email Coach Greg Porter at: gsporter@laurens55.org

 South Carolina Hires Two New Head Coaches…Catching up on some news from Columbia concerning 2 new head coaches for the Gamecocks.

  • Baseball – Paul Mainieri… Last week the Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner announced that Paul Mainieri was coming out of retirement to be the new head baseball coach for the Gamecocks… He retired in 2021 as the head coach at LSU where he started there in 2007… Prior to that he was head coach at Notre Dame, Air Force and St Thomas… He has a total of 1,501 win (775 losses and 8 ties) and is the winningest active coach in the NCAA… He won a National Championship at LSU in 2009 and 4 SEC Championships. He is the 31st coach of the Gamecocks… In a related note, he is keeping Monte Lee on as Associate Head Coach and hitting coach… To read the press release on his hiring, click here… To see the press conference where he was introduced, click here…. In a side note, the former Gamecock Coach Mark Kingston did not stay unemployed very long as he has been named the new baseball coach at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska… If you want to read more about that, click here.
  • Softball – Ashley Chastain… The Gamecocks were also in the market for a new softball coach and they up I-77 in Charlotte as they hired a former Gamecock student –athlete and graduate assistant Ashley Chastain… She has been the head coach for the Charlotte 49ers for the last 5 years where she has a 154-96 record… She was a pitcher for the Gamecocks from 2009-11 after starting her colligate career at Columbus State… To see the press release for more about her, click here…To see her introductory press conference click here.

College Baseball

  • Baseball College World Series … The 8 teams that will compete for the DI baseball Championship have started their quest for the NCAA D-I College Baseball Championship… The teams are divided up into 2 brackets with Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Tennessee making up Bracket 1 while NC State, Kentucky, Florida and Texas A&M make up Bracket 2… Interesting, looks like an ACC or SEC team will win the championship… Below are the most recent games and scores and to learn more about the game click on the score.
  • Tuesday Games
    • Florida State 9 – North Carolina 5 In the first game out in Omaha yesterday, ACC rivals Florida State and North Carolina went at it knowing that the loser would be headed home… In the end, the Seminoles took a 9-5 win over the Tar Heels… The Seminoles simply outhit the Tar Heels 14-10 and outhomered them 2 to 1…  For more information on this game click on the score at the beginning.
    • Kentucky vs. Florida… Bad weather moved through the Omaha area last night and the game between Kentucky and Florida had to be postponed until today.
  • Wednesday Games:
    • Florida 15 – Kentucky 4… In the makeup of the elimination game between Kentucky and Florida that was rained out Tuesday night, Florida scored 7 runs in the first inning and then rolled on to a 15-4 win over Kentucky to remain in the hunt for the national title and send the Wildcats home… The Gators simply outhit the Wildcats 14-5 and 3 of their hits were homers.
    • Tennessee 7 – Florida State 2… In the second game out in Omaha yesterday, the Tennessee Volunteers punched their ticket to the CWS Finals starting Saturday by taking a 7-2 win over the Florida State Seminoles… They scored 3 runs in the first inning and then never were really challenged as they outhit the Seminoles 10-7… The Volunteers scored all but 1 of their runs playing small ball while the Seminoles only 2 runs came in the 7th inning on a pair of solo homers.
    • Texas A&M 6 – Florida 0… In the final game last night, after scoring 15 runs in their game yesterday against Kentucky, the Florida Gators found themselves wishing they had saved some of those runs for the nightcap as the Texas A&M Aggies took a 6-0 win over the Gators to punch their ticket into the finals on Saturday… The Aggies scored 2 runs in the first inning and then went to take the win… Almost all of their runs were scored playing small ball except for a 2-run homer by Caden Sorrell in the sixth inning.

Willie Mays Passes AwayIn case you missed it on the news Tuesday night, Willie Mays one of the all-time greats in major league baseball passed away Tuesday at the age of 93… Mays had a total of 660 homeruns, 3293 hits and batted .301 during his MLB career and very possibly could have been better had he not been drafted by and served in the US Army from May 1952 until his discharge in March 1954… There is a very good article on the Major League Baseball website about him and it has some nice video and links to several other stories concerning his career… If you would like to see it, click here.

  • Braves 7– Tigers 0… The Braves pulled the brooms out of the equipment closet at Truist Park last night as they took a 7-0 win over the Tigers to sweep the 3-game series… Sean Murphy did most of the sweeping for the Braves as he went 4 for 4 with 2 homeruns… Braves right fielder Ramon Laureano (2) also homered in the game… Reynaldo Lopez (5-2) picked up the win going 5 innings giving up 7 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1… The Braves are off tonight and will start a road trip tomorrow night with the first stop being in New York to take on the Yankees.

  • Emperors 6 – Drive 4… The Greenville Drive lost again last night to the Rome Emperors by a score of 6-4 down in Rome, GA…. They actually outhit the Emperors 10-8 but unlike the Emperors just could not get the clutch hit when needed.

  • Ryan Blaney Wins His First Cup Race of the SeasonSunday Ryan Blaney took his first win of the season at the inaugural Cup Series Race at the Iowa Speedway… This was also the 11th Cup series win of his career… He had to hold off William Byron and Chase Elliott who finished second and third respectively…  Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.

Randy Stevens Memorial Bike Ride… The Laurens Police Department (LPD) recently announced the 2nd Annual Caesars Head Bike Run, dedicated this year to the memory of Randy “Steam” Stevens. Scheduled for Sunday, June 30, 2024, this motorcycle and hot rod benefit ride will raise funds for the LPD’s Youth Summer Camp… Of course Randy was a long-time member of the staff here at WLBG and a big supporter of the various activities of the City of Laurens Police Department… Laurens County Buzz has more about this on their website and I encourage you to read this by clicking here… If you can, please help out the Laurens Police Department and also to help honor Randy.

 

Summer Camps at Clinton YMCA… The Clinton YMCA has released their schedule of Summer Youth Sports Camps for this year… To see a list of those camps including dates, location, times and cost click here… These camps do have registration deadlines and you register at the Clinton YMCA… The last camp is:

  • Tennis Camp… This camp will be July 8-10 at the tennis courts at Clinton Middle School… Coach Clovis Simmons will be conducting the camp… Boys and girls ages 6-8 will have their camp between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00 am while boys and girls ages 9 and up will have their camp between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00 am… The cost is $30 for YMCA members and $40 for non-members… The deadline to register is Friday, July 5th @ 4:00 pm
