Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • CHS Athletic Booster Club… It’s not too early to think about joining the CHS Athletic Booster Club for next season… To learn more about the booster club and its benefits, click here… That will carry you to a form where more information is available and you can also print out and use that form to join the booster club… They really do help all the sports put the “Go” in Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Raider Football Camp… The Laurens Raider football team and coaches will also be conducting a camp this summer starting on Monday, June 24th and ending on Thursday, Thursday, June 27th… This camp is for youth who will be in grades 2 – 9 this next school year… The camp will be held at KC Hanna Stadium between the hour of 8:00 am and 11:30 am…  The cost is $50 per camper and you can pay for the camp online by clicking here… For a little more information about this camp click here… If you still have questions about the camp email Coach Greg Porter at: gsporter@laurens55.org

 College Baseball

  • Baseball College World Series
  • Saturday: Texas A&M 9 – Tennessee 5The Championship Series of the College Baseball World Series started Saturday night out in Omaha with the Texas A&M Aggies takin a 9-5… The Aggies scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning and then broke the game open in the 3rd inning where they put 5 runs on the scoreboard to make the score 7-1 and went on to the 9-5 win by outhitting the Volunteers 13-12… A&M also outhomered the Volunteers 2-1 and Tennessee also had 3 errors in the game which aided the A&M scoring in that only 7 of the runs scored by the Aggies was earned.
  • Sunday: Tennessee 4 –Texas A&M 1… Sunday the Tennessee Volunteers showed they were still a force to be reckoned with as they took a 4-1 over the Aggies of Texas A&M to force a deciding game 3 in the College world Series… The Aggies used a solo homer in the 1st inning to take a 1-0 led and the game stayed 1-0 until the top of the 7th inning when the Volunteers scored 2 runs on a 2-run homer and then added 2 more runs in the 8th inning on another 2-run homer and then kept the Aggies off the scoreboard the rest of the way taking the 4-1 win… The Tennessee win forces a game-3 in the best of 3 series tonight at 7:00 pm EDT with the winner taking home the BIG trophy.

College Football

  • 2024-25 College Football Dates Announced… On June 19th the NCAA announced the dates, times and TV viewing for the expanded college football playoffs this upcoming season… If you have forgotten how they plan to choose the 12 teams that will be in the expanded playoffs click here… The first round of the playoffs will start on Friday, December 20, 2024 and the National Champion will be crowned on January 20, 2025 in Atlanta… To see the entire listing of dates and what bowl games will be involved, click here.

Atlanta Braves …For more information on the game(s) below, click on the scores.

  • Braves Take on the Yankees… The Braves started their 7-game road trip with a 3-game series against the Yankees who have the best record in MLB.
    • Friday: Braves 8 – Yankees 1… The Braves started the series off on a positive note as they took an 8-1 win over the Bronx Bombers… They scored 3 runs in the first inning and then went on to outhit the Yankees 14-3 in taking the win…  Chris Sale (10-2) took the win working 5 innings giving up 1 earned run on 1 hit while striking out 8 and walking 3… In the 3-run first inning, Ozzie Albies (6) had a 2-run homer and Austin Riley (7) had a solo homer… Matt Olson (12) also had a 2-run homer in the fourth inning.
    • Saturday: Yankees 8 – Braves 3… After losing the first game of the series on Friday, the Yankees rebounded to take an 8-3 win over the Braves on Saturday simply outhitting the Braves 9-4…The Braves jumped on top early on a solo homer by Marcell Ozuna (21) in the first inning but the Yankees countered with a 2-run homer by Aaron Judge (28) in the bottom of the first… Both teams would get another homer in the game as Travis d’Arnaud (7) had a 2-run homer in the seventh inning and Trent Grisham (4) had a solo homer for the Yankees in the bottom of the seventh… The Yankees just scored more runs than the Braves playing small ball than the Braves did.
    • Sunday: Braves 3 – Yankees 1… Sunday the Braves took a 3-1 win over the Yankees to win the series 2 games to 1… The Yankees actually outhit the Braves 7-6 but the difference turned out to be a 2-run 5th inning where the Braves got a solo homer from Jarred Kelenic (7) and Ozzie Albies had an RBI single…. The Braves travel to St. Louis to start a 3-game series with the Cardinals tonight,

  • All-Star Voting is Open… Voting for the All-Star Game which will be held in Arlington, Texas on July 16th is now open… There will be two phases to the voting and Phase 1 will end on June 27th… You can vote up to 5 times a day and if you wish to do so click here.

  • Friday: Emperors 6 – Drive 5… The Greenville Drive continued their 6-game series with the Rome Emperors over the weekend down in Georgia… On Friday the Drive lost a tough one… They led 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th inning where the Emperors scored 3 runs after two outs to take a 6-5 walk-off win… The Drive did have an error in the 9th that helped the Emperors score those 3 runs.
  • Saturday: Drive 5 – Emperors 3… After the Friday loss, the Drive came back and took a 5-3 win over the Emperors on Saturday… Both teams had 8 hits and each had a homer in the game…. The main difference is that the Emperors had 3 errors and they helped the Drive to the point that only 2 of the Drives runs were earned.
  • Sunday: Emperors 6 – Drive 5… In the final game of the 6-gme series Sunday, the Greenville Drive lost to the Rome Emperors down in Georgia despite outhitting them 10-6… The game was tied 3-3 going into the 7th inning where the Drive scored 2 runs to go up 5-3 only to have the Emperors come back in the bottom of the inning and score 3 runs and then hold the Drive scoreless the rest of the way as they took the 6-5 win…
  • ScheduleThe Drive will be off tonight (Monday) and will return to action tomorrow as they start a 6-game series at Flour Field with the Hickory Crawdads.      If you wish to see the Greenville Drive schedule and results of completed games, click here.

NASCAR

  • Christopher Bell wins at a Rainy New Hampshire Motor SpeedwaySunday Christopher Bell took the Cup Series win up in New Hampshire in a race that went six hours mainly due to a 2-hour red flag rain delay about 2/3 through the race… He finished just a little over a second ahead of Chase Briscoe… Not only did Bell win the Cup Series Race on Sunday he also won the Xfinity Race on Saturday meaning he swept the damp track …  Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.
  • StandingsKyle Larson jumped from second to first in the Cup Series Driver Standings with 620 points while Chase Elliott is in second with 620 points also but he has a few less stage points than Larson giving Larson the lead … The rest of the top 5 are Denny Hamlin (580),  Martin Truex Jr. (572) and Tyler Redick (555)…To see the driver standings for the Cup Series click here… Once you get there you can also click on links to see the standings in Xfinity and Truck Series using tabs in the upper right corner of the posting.

This & That:

Randy Stevens Memorial Bike Ride… The Laurens Police Department (LPD) recently announced the 2nd Annual Caesars Head Bike Run, dedicated this year to the memory of Randy “Steam” Stevens. Scheduled for Sunday, June 30, 2024, this motorcycle and hot rod benefit ride will raise funds for the LPD’s Youth Summer Camp… Of course Randy was a long-time member of the staff here at WLBG and a big supporter of the various activities of the City of Laurens Police Department… Laurens County Buzz has more about this on their website and I encourage you to read this by clicking here… If you can, please help out the Laurens Police Department and also to help honor Randy.

 

Summer Camps at Clinton YMCA… The Clinton YMCA has released their schedule of Summer Youth Sports Camps for this year… To see a list of those camps including dates, location, times and cost click here… These camps do have registration deadlines and you register at the Clinton YMCA… The last camp is:

  • Tennis Camp… This camp will be July 8-10 at the tennis courts at Clinton Middle School… Coach Clovis Simmons will be conducting the camp… Boys and girls ages 6-8 will have their camp between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00 am while boys and girls ages 9 and up will have their camp between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00 am… The cost is $30 for YMCA members and $40 for non-members… The deadline to register is Friday, July 5th @ 4:00 pm

 

Basketball Camp…. The LDHS varsity basketball staff and players in association with the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting a basketball for youth age 9 through 8th grade July 22-25… The camp hours will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm each day… This will be an excellent opportunity for the young player to improve their skills and basketball knowledge form experienced coaches… The first 3 days (Monday-Wednesday) the camp will take place at The Ridge and the last day (Thursday) the action will move to LDHS… You may register for the camp at The Ridge and if you have any questions contact them at 681-7275.
