Clinton HS

  • Catching Up with Clinton HS Sports Awards… Ove the next several days I will be attempting to bring to you the names of student-athletes who won various awards at the Clinton HS Sports Awards Ceremony held just before school let out this year.
    • Girls Basketball: As a reminder the Lady Red Devils went19-6 overall this past season and won the region with a perfect 8-0 region record… They won their first round playoff game defeating Southside 43-18 but lost their second round game to West Oak 47-39 at home.
      • AAA Girls Basketball All-State Team… Mylayja Thompson
      • Region IV Player of the Year…  Mylayja Thompson
      • ALL-Region IV Team… Mylayja Thompson, Ry’Daijia Mars, McKenzie Clark and Bryanna Belton.
      • Region IV Coach of the Year…  John Gardner

    • Boys Basketball: As a reminder the Ted Devil boys’ basketball team was under the direction of 1st year head coach Dontavious Glenn… They finished 17-8 overall and 8-0 in region play winning the region… The Red Devils fell to Southside 49-46 in first round of the playoffs.

      • ALL-Region IV Team… Tushawan Richardson, Devin Swindler and Kadon Crawford.

  •  CHS Athletic Booster Club… It’s not too early to think about joining the CHS Athletic Booster Club for next season… To learn more about the booster club and its benefits, click here… That will carry you to a form where more information is available and you can also print out and use that form to join the booster club… They really do help all the sports put the “Go” in Go Big Red!

College Football 

SEC Football Media DaysStarting today and going through Thursday, in Dallas Texas at Omni Hotel, the SEC will be holding its annual Football Media Days where the commissioner and all the football coaches will talk about the upcoming football season where the SEC welcomes Texas and Oklahoma to the conference… The activities will start at 10 am ET and it can be seen on the SEC Network… Today after commissioner Greg Sankey speaks, LSU, South Carolina (12:35) will take to the podium followed by a lunch break… Afterwards Ole Miss and Vanderbilt will take center stage… To see not only the schedule for today but also the days to come and the players the coaches are expected to bring, click here.

 Atlanta Braves… The Atlanta Braves played a 3-game series with the Padres out in San Diego this past weekend… It was the last series before the All-Star Game Break which starts today. For more information on the game(s) below, click on the scores.

  • Friday: Braves 6 – Padres 1On Friday the Braves scored 4 runs in the 5th inning and made them stand up as they took a 6-1 win over the Padres… They outhit the Padres 9-5 and out homered them 3 to none… Marcell Ozuna had a pair of solo homers to give him 26 homers on the season and Orland Arcia (7) had a 2-run homer… Spencer Schwellenbach (3-4) picked up the win going 7 innings giving up the 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1.
  • Saturday: Padres 4 – Braves 0… On Saturday the padres bats came alive as they pounded out 13 hits off 3 Brave pitchers while the Braves managed only 5 hits as the Padres took a 4-0 win… Marcell Ozuna was the only Brave with more than one hot as he went 2 for 3 and they were both singles.
  • Sunday: Braves 6 – Padres 3… Sunday the Braves took the series win by defeating the Padres 6-3… The Braves only outhit the Padres 9-8 and Travis d’Arnaud’s 2 hits proved to be the difference in the game… He had a 3-run homer in the 6th inning and a solo homer in the 8th inning to give him 9 homers on the season…
  • Up Next…. The Braves will not be back in action until Friday the 19th when they start a 3-game series with the Cardinals in Atlanta.

All-Star GameThe 94th MLB All-Star Game will be played tomorrow at 8:00 pm at Globe Life Field the home of the Texas Rangers… If you have any questions at all about it, I suggest you click here to go to the MLB website where they have links to just about any question you might have about it including but not limited to rosters and starting lineups.

 

Home Run Derby… No for you casual baseball fans I’ll mention that the Home Run Derby will be tonight in Texas and the Braves Marcel Ozuna will be one of the participants… Click here to find out who all the participants will be and stats on them… It also starts at 8:00 pm ET and can be seen on ESPN.

 


Greenville Drive…. The Greenville Drive finished out their 6-game series down in Rome, GA with the Emperors over the weekend… As a reminder they had won 2 of the first 3 games.

  • Friday: Drive 6 – Emperors 5On Friday the drive managed to take a 6-5 win over the Emperors by outhitting them 11-9… The Emperors also had 2 errors one of which figured into the Drive scoring an unearned run… The Drive scored all but 1 of their runs playing small ball and the other run came on a solo homer by Allan Castro (11).
  • Saturday: Emperors 5 – Drive 2On Saturday the Emperors turned the tables and took a 5-2 win over the Drive even though the Drive outhit the Emperors 9-5… Neither team had a homerun and both teams had a couple of errors that hurt them with the Drives errors causing 2 of the Emperors 5 runs to be unearned.
  • Sunday: Drive 2 – Emperors 0… Sunday the Drive took the series 4-2 by taking a 2-0 win over the Emperors… They scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning and made them standup as 4 Drive pitchers held the Emperors to just 5 hits and no runs… Allan Castro drove in the Drives runs on a 2-RBI single.
  • Up Next… The Drive now have a 4-day break in action and will not take to the field until Friday 19th when they start a 3-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fluor  Field.

This & That:

 Basketball Camp…. The LDHS varsity basketball staff and players in association with the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting a basketball for youth age 9 through 8th grade July 22-25… The camp hours will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm each day… This will be an excellent opportunity for the young player to improve their skills and basketball knowledge form experienced coaches… The first 3 days (Monday-Wednesday) the camp will take place at The Ridge and the last day (Thursday) the action will move to LDHS… You may register for the camp at The Ridge and if you have any questions contact them at 681-7275.
