Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Red Devil Football Scrimmages and Jamborees… The following is a list of dates that the Red Devil football team will be involved in a scrimmage or jamboree:
    • August 8th… Scrimmage at home vs. Byrnes and BHP starting at 6:00 pm.
    • August 12th… Scrimmage at Chapin starting at 6:00 pm.
    • August 16th…  Clinton will travel to Chapin to participate in a jamboree taking on Blythewood at about 7:30 pm.
  • CHS Athletic Booster Club… It’s not too early to think about joining the CHS Athletic Booster Club for next season… To learn more about the booster club and its benefits, click here… That will carry you to a form where more information is available and you can also print out and use that form to join the booster club… They really do help all the sports put the “Go” in Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Meet The Raiders August 9th Another sure sign that we are getting closer to the start of school and football season is close is that the 3rd Annual Meet the Raiders will take place on Friday, August 9th at KC Hanna Stadium and will run from 6-8 pm… The cost is free and in addition to the to the parade of athletes there will be music by the Raider band, Raider gear for sale, food trucks and other activities taking place.
  • Raiders at Union… The Raider football team will be in action on Thursday, August 8th as they travel to Union to play a half of football… They will take to the field about 9:00 pm against the hometown Union County Yellow Jackets… This will be your first opportunity to see this year’s team under the direction of Coach Greg Porter. … Go Raiders!
  • Century Club Membership… The Laurens District 55 High school Athletics Booster Club is now taking applications for new Century Club membership of renewal of old memberships for the 2024-2025 school year… Asa quick reminder, joining the Century Club gets you two reserved-seat season tickets to Raider regular season home football games (during playoffs your seat is reserved but you must to get in because of SCHSL rules), a reserved parking pass and an “All-Sport” athletic pass that admits two to any Raider regular season home contest in any sport (again SCHSL rules require payment for playoffs). 2024 Summer Olympics… The Paris Summer Olympics actually started with some preliminary events on Wednesday, 7-24-24 and will continue through Sunday, 8-11-24…. They official opened with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, 7-26-24… If you would like to go to the official website for the Paris Summer Olympics where there is a wealth of information about the Olympic Games in Paris click here.

  • Schedule of Events… On the Olympic website there are several ways to look at the schedule of events… If you click here it will carry you to a posting where you can select the day you are interested in or you can select a sport and see when competition will be taking place in that sport… Either way if you check for earlier dates it will give you the results of the completed contest… One thing to remember, Paris is 6 hours ahead of our time…Example: if it is noon here it is 6:00 pm Paris time.
  • Viewing Schedule… NBC is primarily responsible for the viewing of the Olympics on TV… They have a posting on their website that list the viewing schedule not only for “over the air” viewing but also internet or other network viewing of various contest or ceremonies… Click here to go to that posting.
  • Medal Count… Also on the NBC Olympic website is a posting that gives the medal count for each country… To go there click here… When you get there you can expand it to see what sport the country won the medals in… They are showing the medal count for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo… The Total Medal Count for the top 3 countries as of 5:00 am this morning… Click on the link above to get more details.
    • USA: 3 gold, 8 silver, 9 bronze for a total of 20… Those winning gold were Lee Kiefer in women’s fencing, Torri Huske in women’s 100m butterfly and men’s 4×100 m freestyle relay.
    • France: 5 gold, 8 silver, 3 bronze for a total of 16
    • Japan: 6 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze for a total of 12
    • China: 5 gold, 5 silver, 2 bronze for a total of 12

    • Men’s Gymnastics team Finishes ThirdThe U.S. men’s gymnastics team for the first time in 16 years won a medal in the Olympics… The team finished third (Bronze Medal) close behind Japan and China… For more on this click here.
    • USA Women Defeat Japan 102-76… The U.S. women’s basketball team had their first game in the Olympics Monday and they defeated Japan 102-76 in Pool C group play… The team was led by A’ja Wilson who scored 24 points… For more on this game and A’ja click here. ..     • Dawn Staley in Presidential DelegationGamecocks women’s basketball dawn Staley was chosen to be in the Presidential Delegation led by First Lady Jill Biden this past Friday for the Opening Ceremonies… If you would like to read more about this and find out whom else was in the official delegation top the Opening Ceremonies click here.
    • Dawn Staley Carried US Flag in 2004 Olympics and What it Led To… Twenty years ago Dawn Staley was selected by the US Olympic Team to carry the US flag during the opening ceremonies in Greece… This was an honor she did not expect in the last Olympics she played in… The State Newspaper has a nice article about the impact of that honor influenced her life since then… To read in click here.

PC Notes

  • Single Game Football Tickets Now on Sale… Very recently PC opened up football ticket sales to include purchasing tickets for single games without having to purchase a season ticket… The Blue Hose will have 6 home games this season starting on September 14th when they host Virginia-Lynchburg at 1:00 pm… They are also scheduled to have 2 night games….  Atlanta Braves

  • Brewers 8 – Braves 3… Last night the Braves started a 3-game series with the Brewers in Milwaukie on a less than stellar note as they fell by a score of 8-3… The Braves had an early 2-1 lead until the Brewers struck for 3 runs in the 6th inning to take the lead and never look back… They outhit the Braves 11-4 and both teams had 3 homeruns in the game… All of the Brave’s runs came on solo homers as Marcell Ozuna (31) had one in the 4th inning, Orlando Arcia (9) blasted one in the 5th inning and Sean Murphy (6) hit his in the 9th inning… The starting pitcher for the Braves last night was Grant Holmes who pitched 5 innings giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 8 and walking none… Interesting note is that he was born in Conway and played for Conway HS.

Greenville Drive

  • Greenville Drive Back in action Tonight… The Greenville Drive had the night off last night and will return to action tonight as they start a 6-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks… The Drive are 18-12 in the second half of the season in the south Atlantic League Southern Division 1.5 games behind Bowling Green that leads the division in the second half of the season… Wilmington is 15-14 in the second half of the season and in third place in the Norther Division of the SAL.

Carolina Panthers

  • Fan Fest at Clemson Thursday (8-1)… For those of you who have missed the Carolina Panthers not holding their training camp at Wofford this year there will be a little bit of makeup for that as the Panthers will be holding a Fan Fest at Clemson this Thursday, August 1st… This is a ticked event where the tickets will cost you $5 with the proceeds going to Panther Charities… There will be entertainment, fireworks and a chance to win Super Bowl tickets… To read more about this event and get a ticket, click here to go to the Panthers website where there is more information and a link to purchase tickets… Gates will open at 5:30 pm.

NASCAR

  • StandingsKyle Larson (749) now leads the standings for the Cup Series Drivers with Chase Elliott (739) second… The rest of the top 5 are Tyler Redick (734), Denny Hamlin (706) and Ryan Blaney moved up 2 spots to # 5… Click here if you would like to see the entire driver standings and once at the NASCAR site you can also click on links to see the standings in Xfinity and Truck Series using tabs in the upper right corner of the posting.
