Local Notes

 Clinton HS

  • Volleyball: Woodruff 3 – Clinton 0… Last Thursday the Red Devil volleyball team hosted the Woodruff Wolverines and lost 3-0… The JV team also lost to Woodruff 2-0… No other details on these matches… The JV and varsity teams will travel to Laurens tonight to take on the Raiders with JV action starting at 5:30 and varsity at 7:00.

Clinton HS & Laurens HS

  • Clinton 35 – Laurens 8… As most of you probably know b know the Red Devils took a 35-8 win over the Raiders last Friday night at Wilder Stadium to win the fourth Laurens County Championship in as many years… The game was fairly close until just before the end of the first half as the Red Devils only led the Raiders 14-8 after Laurens actually led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter… The Raiders had the ball at their own 10-yard line and with 56 seconds left in the half they fumbled, and the Red Devils recovered it… The Red Devils took needed only 1 play to score from the 10 yd. line and with the extra point the score stood 21-8 Clinton and the Raiders were never able to get back in the game… The Raiders had 4 fumbles in the game and lost all 4 of them and the Red Devils also had an interception and they scored 21 points off the Raiders 5 turnovers.

Laurens Academy

  • Volleyball: Crusaders 3 – Cambridge Academy 0… Catching up with the Crusader volleyball team, last Thursday they defeated the Cambridge Academy Cougars 3-0 at home to run their season record to 10-2… Set scores were 25-20, 25-14 and 25-14… They will be back in action again today as they host the Community Christian Academy Ambassadors out of Martinez, Georgia today at 6:00 pm… The Ambassadors are 8-0 on the season
  • Patriots 32 – Crusaders 20… The Laurens Academy Crusaders hosted the Wardlaw Patriots last Friday night in their home opener taking on a team that historically they have had trouble defeating… Well that proved to be the case again last Friday as the Patriots took a 32-20 win… The Patriots actually led 14-8 about a minute before the half nut Wardlaw struck and led 16-14 at the half… With about 2 minutes left in the third quarter the Patriots led 32-20 which was the final score.
    • Scoring for the Crusaders… All the Crusader scoring came on the ground as Garrett Murphy had 2 TDs and Caleb Hardy 1…Ethan Collins had a two-point conversions

  • Volleyball: Saints 3 – Chiefs 0… last Thursday the Thornwell Saints volleyball teams traveled over to Calhoun Falls to take on the Blue Flashes… Good news for Saints fans as they took a 3-0 win in varsity action and 2-0 win in JV action… Set scores for the varsity match were 25-15, 25-17 and 25-7… For the JV match set scores were 25-8 and 25-6… Both teams are now 2-0 in region play… The teams will be back in action as they travel to Whitmire today to take on the Wolverines.

 Atlanta Braves… The Braves finished their 4-game series with the Phillies up in Philadelphia over the weekend… As a reminder the Phillies won the first game Thursday 5-4.

  • Friday: 7 – Phillies 2… The Braves rebounded on Friday to take a 7-2 win… They outhit the Phillies 9-7 and out homered them 3-2… Orlando Arcia (15) had two solo homers in the game and Sean Murphy (8) also had a solo homer.
  • Saturday: Phillies 3 – Braves 0… Saturday the Braves outhit the Phillies 6-5 but that is not what counts as the Braves could bit get the clutch hit and the Phillies had a pair of homeruns as they took a 3-0 win over the Braves
  • Sunday: Phillies 3 – Braves 2 (11)… Sunday the Phillies took a 3-2 win over the Braves in 11 innings thus winning the series 3-1… The game was tied 2-2 and the Braves had the bases loaded in the top of the 9th inning with 2 out but just could not get the timely hit to take the lead… The Phillies took the walk-off win when in the bottom of the 11th inning with 2 out, Nick Castellanos had an RBI single up the middle to drive in the winning run.
  • Up Next… The Braves have tonight off and start a 3-game series tomorrow night in Atlanta with the Colorado Rockies.

  • Standings… To see the MLB Standings click here… Once you get there you will see the standing by league (American or National) and also by division… The Braves are currently 74-63 on the season and 7 games behind the Phillies in the NL East… They have no games remaining with the Phillies and in order to win the division they will have to have some help…  They still have a chance to make it into the playoffs as a wildcard but they have stiff challenges for that spot from Arizona and San Diego for that spot with about a month to go in the season.

 


Greenville Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods up in Bowling Green over the weekend… As a reminder, the Hot Rods won the first three games of the series.

  • Friday: Hot Rods 7 – Drive 0… The Hot Rods took a 7-0 win over the Drive on Friday by simply outhitting the Drive 10-1 and e Drive errors also aided the Hot Rods.
  • Saturday: Hot Rods 6 – Drive 2… On Saturday the Hot Rods only outhit the Drive 6-5 but the Hot Rods took a 6-2 win over the Drive… The Hot Rods had 2 homers in the game while the Drive had a single homer by Nelly Taylor (1) and 6 walks, a wild pitch and a balk by the Drives 3 pitchers aided the Hot Rods scoring.
  • Sunday: Drive 6 – Hot Rods 1… The Drive avoided being swept in the series by the Hot Rods Sunday when they took a 6-1 win… All the runs by both teams were scored playing small ball as there were no homers in the game.
  • Up Next… The Drive will have the night off and will be back in action tomorrow night as they start a 6-game series at Flour Field against the Winston-Salem Dash… This will be the last series of the season for the Drive.

  • Chase Briscoe Wins at DarlingtonSunday down at Darlington in the last “regular season” race Chase Briscoe took the win finishing well ahead of the second place driver Kyle Busch… For more information as to who was leading at the suspension of the race click here.
  • Playoffs now that the regular season is finished, the 16 Cup Drivers that have made the playoffs and are in the Chase for the Cup Championship are now locked in… Spots 1-5 are occupied by Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick. William Byron and Ryan Blaney….
