Local Notes 

Schedule Changes Due to Weather…. The threat of bad weather from tropical storm / hurricane Helene is causing high school and middle school football schedules to be adjusted… Below is what I know about some of those changes at the time of this posting

  • Laurens HS… The Raiders are now set to host the Lexington Wildcats tonight at 7:00 pm (NOT 7:30)… We will not be having a Friday Night Insiders program tonight but we are planning on starting our normal pregame show at 6:20 pm from KC Hanna Stadium… As for the JV game scheduled for tomorrow, I do believe it has been cancelled and will not be made up… If that changes I’ll let you know… By the way, Homecoming is now rescheduled for October 4th when the Raiders host Fountain Inn.
  • Clinton HS… The varsity game is still on for Friday night with Union County is still on as is Homecoming… If that changes I will let you know… However the JV football game at Union has been moved up to tonight at 6:00 pm on the campus at Union County HS.
  • Laurens Academy… The Crusaders are still planning on hosting Newberry Academy this Friday night… If they are forced to change that they will make the game up on October 18th which at this time is scheduled to be a bye week for the Crusaders.
  • Middle School Football… Not all the coaches got back to me yesterday when I reached out to them about schedule changes… What follows is from the ones that did:
    • Hickory Tavern will be at Thornwell today at 5:50 pm
    • Sanders will play at Ware Shoals today at 5:30

Clinton HS

  • Up Next for Red Devil Football… The Red Devils return home this Friday night for their last non-region game with the Union County Yellow Jackets… It is also Homecoming.

 

Laurens HS

  • Homecoming Parade PhotosThe Homecoming Parade was held on Monday, 9-13-2024… The Raider band, class representative, cheerleaders, and athletic team members all participated in the parade… To see a slideshow of some photos taken at the parade click here.
  • Fall Ticketing Information and Other Need to Know Venue Information… The Raiders have released information concerning tickets and other rules and regulations you need to know about before you go to any athletic events on campus this fall… This information also includes a parking map… Please check this out to save you some problems before you go… Click here to see that information. 

Laurens Academy

  • Garrison Vaughn TD Club Player of the Week… Monday it was announced that Garrison Vaughn has been chosen as this week’s Laurens County Touchdown Club’s Player of the week for his contributions in the Crusaders 52-36 win over WW King at Todd Kirk Field last Friday night… This win was the Crusaders first the Knights in several years and they are now 4-2 on the season… The junior who plays on the offensive line helped the Crusaders amass 448 yards of total offense… He also plays on defense where he had 10 total tackles including 6 tackles for loss and had a huge blocked punt on special teams… Head Coach Jolly Doolittle stated; “Garrison is everything you want in an offensive and defensive lineman.  He is tough and relentless, smart and precise, and an unselfish leader on the team.”… He will be honored at the club’s next meeting which will be on Thursday, Oct.4th at noon at The Ridge on Exchange Drive where the guest speaker will be Coach Mike Ayers, former head football coach at Wofford College and South Carolina Football Hall of Fame member,

Laurens County Touchdown Club

  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club held its most current meeting last Thursday, 9-19 at The Ridge on Exchange Drive… Nemo Fernandez of Laurens and Javen Cook of Clinton were honored as the last two weeks Player of the Week… Coach Clay Hendrix of Furman was the featured speaker… If you would like to see a video of that meeting, click here.

  • FBS AP Poll… The latest FBS AP Poll still has Texas as #1 and Georgia #2… Ohio State is still #3, Alabama #4 but Tennessee moved up a spot to #5… Spots 6-10 also had changes and are now occupied by Ole Miss, Miami (FL), Oregon, Penn State and Utah… Clemson moved up to #17… To see the entire top 25 AP Poll click here
  • FCS Coaches Poll… The FCS Coaches Poll continues to have South Dakota State and North Dakota State ranked #1 & #2… In our general area, Mercer moved up to #13 and UT Chattanooga dropped out of the top 25… To see the entire FCS Coaches Poll click here.

 Atlanta Braves

  •  Braves 5 – Mets 1… The Braves started a 3-game series with the Mets in Atlanta last night and if they want to have any chance at making the playoffs as a wildcard team, they need to win the series… Well they made a good start toward that goal last night as they took a 5-1 win over the Mets… The Braves put 3 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning and added a couple more runs later on in route to the win… They outhit the Mets 10-4 and out-homered them 2-1… One of Michael Harris II 3 hits was a solo homer (16) in the 4th inning and Marcell Ozuna (39) also had a solo homer in the 5th inning.

  • Riley Out for the SeasonA quick note for Braves fans… As you may or may not recall, Austin Riley had his right hand fractured back on August 18th when it was hit by a 97 mph fastball thrown by Angel’s right-hander Jack Kochanowicz… At the time it was hoped he would be able to be back by the time postseason started but that will not be the case as doctors recently said it had not healed enough and put him out for the season… To read more about this click here.

  • Kyle Larson Dominates at BristolKyle Larson led 462 of the 500 laps in the cup series race at Bristol last Saturday… He finished more than 7 seconds ahead of second place finisher Chase Elliott   … For more information as to who was leading at the suspension of the race click here.
  • PlayoffsAt the end of the race the field of 16 eligible for the title was cut to 12… Ty Gibbs, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski and Harrison Burton were eliminated… … Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell and Tyler Reddick now are the top 3three in the playoff standings. ..
