Local Notes

Some High School Coaches Hoping for Extension of Season… Some high school coaches around the state are hoping that the SCHSL will consider extending the season a week or two to help make up already postponed game caused by Hurricane Helene and other that might have to be postponed this week due to conditions that still exist after the hurricane… This would not be unprecedented as just such a thing happened back in 2015… There is a nice article about this in the State Newspaper that includes comments from Jerome Singleton Commissioner of the SCHSL and others… To read that article click here…. I have ever since 2015 advocated a remedy for this problem that so far no coach I have mentioned it to have disliked… If you are curious about my proposal, click here… I would be curious on your thoughts about it.

Pete Rose Passes Away… Last night it was announced that Pete Rose had passed away at his home in Nevada… He was found dead by a family member and there were no signs of foul play but the coroner in Clark County, Nevada, will investigate to determine cause and manner of death… To those of my generation he earned the nickname Charlie Hustle for 100 % effort at all times and a long list of awards he earned during his career mostly with the Reds an at the end of his career with the Phillies… He had one weakness that ultimately caused him to receive a lifetime ban from pro baseball and has kept him out of the MLB Hall Of Fame and that was he liked to gamble on baseball games he played in and managed… For much more on him and his career click here to go to the MLB website where they have posted a tribute to him… RIP Pete!

Atlanta BravesThe Braves hosted the Mets in Atlanta last night making up 2 games that were postponed last week due to Hurricane Helene and in order to make the playoffs the Braves had to win at least one of those games and two would be better to improve playoff seeding

  •  Game 1: Mets 8 – Braves 7… The first game last night was a wild and wooly affair as the Braves led early but could not hold it as the Mets scored 2 runs in top of the 9th inning to take an 8-7 win… The Braves scored first on a 2-run homer by Ozzie Albies (10)… They scored again on a solo homer by Ramón Laureano to go up 3-0… The Mets put 6 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning to go up 6-3… The Braves responded playing small, ball in the bottom of the 8th to make it 7-6 Atlanta…The Mets responded with a 2-run homer by Francisco Lindor (33) and the Braves could not answer that… With the win the Mets the Mets claimed a wildcard spot in the playoffs and the Braves had to win the second game yesterday or the D-backs would get the last wildcard spot.
  • Game 2: Braves 3 – Mets 0…Good news for Braves fans as the Braves took a 3-0 win over the Mets in the second game yesterday to claim the last wildcard spot in the National League… Gio Urshela had an RBI single in the second inning driving in Jorge Soler who reached on a double…The Braves added 2 insurance runs in the 7th inning when Sea Murphy walked to lead off the inning and then with 2 outs Ozzie Albies singled and a throwing error by the Mets pitcher put runners on third and second with 2 outs…Marcell Ozuna then singled to bring in the two runners ahead of him to make the core 3-0 Braves… The Braves bullpen then held the Mets scoreless the rest of the way… Remember for more info on each of these 2 games click on the score at the beginning of each posting… In addition to that, if you click here, it will carry you to short but nice article on the Braves website about them making the playoffs despite the injury riddled season they had this year.
  • Postseason Schedule… The Braves had little time to celebrate as they had to get on a plane and travel out to San Diego to take on the Padres tonight at 8:38 pm EDT and the game can be seen on ESPN… If you would like to see the entre playoff schedule by date all the way to the World Series click here… If you would rather see the post season schedule by matchups click here… If you look at both of those and you are still confused or have questions about the playoff format, click here where they try to explain it and thus answer your questions.
