Local Notes

Basketball… Some of the local varsity basketball teams were in action this weekend and below is what I can tell you about their results…. Hopefully I can have more tomorrow.

Clinton HS

  • Girls… The Lady Red Devils were playing in the Carolina Invitational over the weekend at the Summerville HS site.
    • Friday: Clinton 49 – Durham Academy 39… In their first game on Friday, the shorthanded Lady Red Devils took a 49-39 win over the Durham Academy (NC) Cavaliers despite being down a couple pf players due to illness… The Red Devils led 23-11 at the half and then held on to take the win as the Cavaliers Shy Williams scored 18 of her game high 23 points in the second half in a comeback attempt that fell way short… The Red Devils were led in scoring by McKenzie Clark who had 14 points… Other scoring for the Red Devils included Emma Patterson with 8 points while Nah’Shia Wright, Jakia Burton and Byranna Belton all finished with 7 points… Rounding out the scoring for the Red Devils Mylayja Thompson had 6 points.
    • Saturday: Concord Christian 36 – Clinton 25… On Saturday the Lady Red Devils took on the Lions of Concord Christian out of Knoxville, TN…. As Coach Garner put it “Couldn’t find the bottom of the basket” as the Red Devils fell to the Lions by a score of 36-25… He also pointed out that the Red Devil defense played well and kept it from being a blowout as the offense struggled… McKenzie Clark and Bryanna Belton both had 8 points to lead the Red Devils…. Nah’shia Wright finished with 5 points while Emma Patterson and Mylayja Thompson finished with 2 points each.
    • Up Next: The team will be taking on the Cross Schools Stingrays out of Bluffton, SC today at 11:30 am.

  • Boys… The Red Devil boys’ varsity team was also participating in the same tournament over the weekend at the Summerville HS site also.
    • Friday: Durham Academy 92 – Red Devils 64… The Red Devil boys also took on the Durham Academy Patriots on Friday but I hate to have to report that the news is not good in that game as the Cavaliers took a 92-64 win over the Red Devils… The Cavaliers jumped out to a 24-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 49-35 at the half and then continued to outscore the Red Devils in the second half except in the third quarter where both teams scored 22 points… The Cavaliers had 6 players scoring in double-digits… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Devin Swindler who finished with 18 points and J’shon Nabors was also in double-digits with 10 points… Jaydon Glenn contributed 7 points, Tushawan Richardson 6, Kylen Calhoun 5, Khari Vance 5, Zy Butler 5, Christian Jones 2, DJ Clark, 2, Jared Willard 2 and Patrick McGowan 2.
    • Saturday: Clinton 56 – Concord Christian 35… On Saturday the boys’ team also faced off against the Concord Christian Lions and the news is better as the Red Devils took a 56-35 win… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Tushawan Richardson who scored 15 points and Devin Swindler who finished with 14 points… Christian Jones and Nyterian Smith both scored 7 points, J’shon Nabors 6, Nyking Pitts 2, Khari Vance 2, and Patrick McGowan 1.
    • Up Next: They are scheduled to play the Cross Schools Stingrays at 12:45 today.

    • Friday: Washington HS 48 – Raiders 38… On Friday at Fort Dorchester HS the Lady Raiders took on the Washington HS Patriots out of Charles Town WV…  The Raiders trailed 43-21 at the end of three quarters of play and tried to come back scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter but that was too little too late as the patriots took a 48-38 win… I believe that Zoe Young led the Raiders with 16 points and Nyri Allen was also in double-digits with10 points.
    • Saturday: Howard Tech. 41 – Laurens 32… The tournament website shows that the Howard Tech Wildcats out of Wilmington, DE took a 41-32 win over the Raiders but I do not have a confirmation on that score.
