Local Notes

 Clinton and Laurens… The Raiders and the Red Devils got together last night in varsity basketball action at Clinton in Round One of the County Championships.

  • Girls: Laurens 42 – Clinton 39 OT… The girls’ game saw the Lady Raiders take a 42-39 win but they had to go to overtime to do it… The Raiders took a 9-1 lead after 8 minutes of play as Clinton’s offense was cold to start the game… The second quarter saw the Red Devils get hot behind Bryanna Belton’s 4 three-point goals in the quarter and come back to take a 19-11lead into the locker room at the half… The Raiders came back out in the third quarter and try to pound the ball inside to Zoe Young who either scored or was fouled and helped the Raiders come back to trail by 1 (27-26) going into the fourth quarter… The fourth quarter was back and forth and the Raiders tied the game 33-33 with 47.8 seconds left on a free throw by Nyri Allen… Both teams had turnovers down the stretch and a last second shot by the Raiders Ty Jones was off the mark as the game went to overtime… There Nyri Allen scored the first 4 points and the Raiders led 492-39 with 1:04 left in the period after Ty Jones made a pair of free throws…Both teams had turnovers, and the Red Devils got off a last shot but failed to connect as the Raiders took the 42-39 win… The Raiders were led in scoring by Zoe Yong who had 19 points and Nyri Allen who finished with 13 points… The Lady Red Devils were led in scoring by Bryanna Belton who finished with 18 points 15 of which came from behind the three-point line… Also scoring for the Raiders Ty Jones finished with 6 points and Gabby Wormley 4… Scoring points for the Red Devils Emma Patterson finished with 9 points, Mckenzie Clark 4, Jakia Burton 4, Symiah Floyd 3 and Nah’shia Wright 1… The Raiders improve to 6-10 on the season and the Red Devils are now 11-4

 

  • Boys: Laurens 69 – Clinton 57… The boys’ game was also a good one that was close at times but in the end the Raiders took a 69-57 win… The Raiders put 11 unanswered points on the board to start the game and led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter…. The Red Devils outscored the Raiders by 2 points in the second quarter as they fought back but the Raiders still led 29-24 at the half…  The game remained close in the third quarter with the Raiders leading 46-39 going into the fourth quarter where they outscored the Red Devils 23-18 to take the 69-57 win… The Raiders were led in scoring by TyJ Jones who finished with 25 points, Will Thompson who finished with14 and Q. Watts with 13… The Red Devils had two players in double digits as Devin Swindler scored 20 points and Tushawan Richardson 19… Others who scored for the Raiders include DJ Martin and Zee Simpson who scored 6 points each, Trendon Brown 3, while Hyikeem Burnside and both scored a single point… Others who scored for the Red Devils include Nyterian Smith who contributed 8 points, Cristian Jones 5, Kylen Calhoun 3 and Dirkus Clark 2… The Raiders are now 11-5 on the season and the Red Devils are 6-6.

 


Clinton HS

  • Yesterday I told you that the Red Devils hosted the Columbia HS Capitals Tuesday night to open region play… I told you that the Lady Red Devils took a 63-11 win over the Capitals but I did not know how the boys’ game came out… Well I do now.
    • Boys Game Tuesday: Clinton 69 – Capitals 52…. The Red Devils led 20-3 at the end of the first quarter and 33-21 at the half as they continued to outscore the Capitals in the second half but the Capitals did outscore them 17-12 in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late as the Red Devils opened region play with a 69-52 win… Tushawan Richardson led the Red Devils scoring 24 points with Devin Swindler also in double digits with 13 points.

 

  • Up Next… The Red Devils will host the Chester Cyclones in region action tomorrow

 


Laurens HS

  • Up Next… The Raiders will travel to Emerald to take on the Vikings in region action tomorrow.

 

Laurens Academy

  • Up Next… The Crusaders are scheduled to travel to Wardlaw tomorrow.

Thornwell

  • Up Next… The Saints will step out of region play tonight as they host the Greenwood Christian Hawks.

Middle School Basketball… All games start at 5:00 pm unless otherwise noted with girls’ game first followed by boys’ game… Note: coaches very often change schedule without telling me… To see the season master schedule click hereNOTE…Dixie and Thornwell do NOT have middle school girls teams this season so the 5:00 pm start will be for the boys’ game….
