Local Notes

SCHSL Basketball BracketsIf you would like to see all the brackets for the South Carolina High School League for all the classifications both boys and girls, click here…. NOTE… For all SCHSL playoff games, the tickets will cost $8 each and anyone over the age of two must have a ticket to enter… The only passes that will be accepted are SCHSL passes… No school issued passes of any type will be accepted.


Clinton HS

  • Girls: Clinton 67 – Liberty 29… The Lady Red Devils opened play in the Class AA playoffs last night taking on another set of Red Devils, the Liberty Lady Red Devils… As Coach John Gardner put it, they started “slow” as they only led 14-7 after 8 minutes of play… well they may have started slow but they sure finished strong as they rolled to a 67-29 win over Liberty… Clinton had four players scoring in double-digits and was led in scoring by Bryanna Belton who finished with 17 points 9 of them from behind the three-point line… Nah’shia Wright finished with 13 points, Mylayja Thompson 12 and McKenzie Clark 10… Rounding out the scoring for Clinton both Ry’Daijia Mars and Kemaria Shelton scored 5 points, Jakia Burton 3 and Symiah Floyd 2… The Red Devils advance to round two Thursday night when they will host the Landrum Cardinals at 6:00 pm… Landrum took a 54-31 win over the lady Patriots of American Leadership Academy last night.
  • Boys: The Red Devil boys will be hosting the Saluda Tigers at 6:00 pm tonight… The Red Devils finished second in their region with a 14-8 overall record… They will be hosting the Saluda Tigers Tuesday at 6:00 pm… The Tigers finished third in their region with a 7-4 region record… They are averaging 51.1 points per game whole giving up 40.5 points per game… The Red Devils are averaging 61 points per game while giving up 53.2 points per game.

Laurens HS

  • Basketball up Next…
    • Boys: Berea 60 – Raiders 58… The Raider boys’ basketball team saw it season come to an end last night as the Berea Bulldogs took a30-58 win scoring the winning shot just before the buzzer went off… The Raiders arguably did not play their best last night as they trailed 34-30 at the half… They came back in the third quarter and led 45-42 at its end… The Bulldogs and the Raiders went to-to-toe down the stretch and the Raiders led 58-56 with just under a minute to go when they committed a turnover that the Bulldogs converted into a score to tie the game 58-58… The Raiders had a chance to take the lead back with about 20 seconds left when one of the Raiders had two free throws but missed them both… The Bulldogs then went down the court and scored the winning basket with about a second left to end the Raiders’ season… The Bulldogs were hot from the outside as they 11 three-point shots while the Raiders had only 4… The Raiders had three players scoring in double-digits as TyJ Jones finished with 19 points, while both RJ Brewster-Snow and Will Tomson scored 12 each… Rounding out the scoring for the Raiders Zee Simpson scored 6 points, DJ Martin 4 while Quin Anderson and Trendon Brown both finished with 2 points… Q. Watts rounded out the Raiders scoring with 1 point… The Raiders finish the season with a 19-8 overall record… Thanks to the team and Coach Flood for the great season that saw the Raider not give up the entire season!
    • Girls: The 12-13 Lady Raiders will open playoff action on the road tomorrow at 6:30 at Camden HS taking on the Lady Bulldogs who finished their season with a 16-6 record and third in their region… They are averaging 68.1 points per game while giving up 41.8 points per game…  The Lady Raiders are averaging 39.7 points per game while giving up 41.6 points per game.

Laurens Academy

  • Girls: Crusaders 49 – Sundevils 43…  The Laurens Academy Lady Crusaders opened up their participation in the SCISA Class AA Playoffs down at Cardinal Newman HS yesterday taking on the Lady Sundevils of Charleston Colligate from of James Island… Good news to report to Crusader fans as they took a tight 49-43 win over the Sundevils… The Crusaders led 18-17 at the half and then outscored the Sundevils 18-13 in the third quarter to take a 36-30 lead… That Crusaders made that 6-point difference hold up as both teams scored 13 points down the stretch…The Crusaders had two players scoring in double-digits and were led by Sadie Bruyere who finished with a game-high 20 points… The other Crusader scoring in double digits was Braylee Burke who scored 15 points with 9 of them coming from behind the three-point arc…. Mackenzie Runyan’s finished with 6 points, Abby Howard 4, Brooklyn Senn 3 and Madisyn Graham 1… The Crusades advance to round two (semi-finals) Thursday at Wilson Hall against an opponent to be determined by other action last night and at a time I do not know yet… I’ll try to let you know tomorrow.

 

Thornwell

  • Girls…The Lady Saints finished in 6th place in the region and made it into the playoffs… They will start the playoffs tonight on the road traveling to the Bishopville area taking on the Lee Central Lady Stallions… The Lady Stallions won their region with a perfect 12-0 region record and finished with an 18-4 overall record averaging 52.1 points per game while giving up 27-5… Of course the Lady Saints finished the regular season with a 7-12 record averaging 33.5 points per game while giving up 39.9 points per game… Now the MaxPreps schedule shows the game starting at 7:00 pm but Coach Justin Dawkins text me saying it started at 6:00 pm.

  • William Byron Wins Rain Delayed Daytona 500… In case you missed it Sunday night, William Byron was sitting in just the right spot to miss all the wrecking in front of him on the last lap of the rain delayed Daytona 500 to take his second win there in as many years..   • Driver Standings… After the first race, the top 3 drivers in the Cup Series Standings are Ryan Blaney, William Byron and Austin Cindric… If you click here you will go the NASCAR posting that has the Cups Series standings from top to bottom… Once you get there you can click on tabs at the top of the page to see the driver standings in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series.
  • Master Schedule… If you click here it will carry you to the NASCAR website where the season schedule is posted and you can look at the Cup Series. Xfinity Series or the Craftsman Truck Series by clicking on their icon at the top of the list… In addition to the date and location, it will also give you race times and TV viewing options.

  • Raider Cheerleading Meeting… Any 6th-11th graders who are interested in joining the Raider cheerleaders next school year need to know that there is a mandatory meeting for all interested in the lecture theater on Tuesday, Feb.18th at 6:00 pm… Also note that if you are interested and come to the meeting, a parent or guardian MUST also attend with you…  Ai for some reason you cannot make the meeting, you need to reach out to Coach Patterson immediately…  Her email address is epatterson@laurens55.org.
