  • Camden Wins Class AAA Boys Tennis Championship… A quick note that might be of interest to Red Devil tennis fans… Camden repeated as Class AAAA Champion last Saturday as they defeated Daniel 4-0… As you may recall, Daniel is the team that knocked Clinton out of the tournament last Wednesday…. Something unusual happened in that it took the over 5 hours and 3 different venues to do it… They started the match at the Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence but heavy rains came and lightning so they tried to move the match Camden Tennis Center  a little less than an hour away and a few blocks from Camden HS… Just about the time the match was ready to resume, heavy rain started to fall again… That forced them to move the match to Dreher HS 35 minutes away where they were finally able to complete the match… They spent more time traveling than playing… LOL

Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Baseball: Wren 7 – Clinton 4… The Red Devil baseball went ahead and hosted the Wren Hurricanes on Friday to get ahead of the predicted bad weather on Saturday… As you may recall Wren handed the Red Devils their first loss in the playoffs last Tuesday by a score of 8-4… Unfortunately I have to report that the Hurricanes defeated the Red Devils by a score of 7-4 to end the Red Devils season… The Red Devils led 2-1 after one inning of play as Harrison Moore singled driving in Brett Young who doubled and Luke Young laid down a sacrifice bunt scoring Carson Glenn who had singled… After that Wren scored 1 run in the 2nd inning to tie the game, 3 in the 4th inning and single runs in the 6th and 7th inning while Clinton could only muster 2 more runs in 6th inning…In the 6th inning Camden Finley tripled driving in Tanner Koko after Angel Vargas scored on a wild pitch… Both teams had 8 hits in the game Carson Glenn and Camden Finley getting 2 hits each. .. A two-run homer was among the Hurricanes 8 hits… The Red Devils finished the season with a 14-12 record and did finish first in the regionTo see the SCHSL Class AAAA Playoff Brackets click here.
  • Softball: Travelers Rest 14 – Clinton 6… The Red Devil softball team was on the road Friday night in an elimination game at Travelers Rest… I hate to have to report that the Devildogs took a 14-6 win over the Red Devils thus eliminating them from the Class AAA playoffs… Now I don’t have the Red Devil scoring of the game and what follows is from the Devildogs scoring of the game…  The Red Devils scored a single run in the 1st inning when Kamryn Campbell doubled and late scored when Alyssa Young singled… That would be the last lead for the Red Devils as in the second inning the devil dogs scored 8 runs and went on to take the win…. The Red Devils never gave up as they scored 2 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings and a single run in the 7th but they just could not catch up…  The Devildogs outhit the Red Devils 17-9…For the Red Devils, Halleigh Luke, Alyssa Young and Me-Me Smith all had 2 hits each… Due to 5 Red Devil errors only 6 of the Devildogs 14 runs were earned while on the other hand due to 4 Devildog errors on 3 of the Red Devils 6 runs were earned…. If I get access to the Red Devil scoring of the game I will bring you the box score and scorecard later…. The Red Devils finish the season 12-12 on the season and the future look bright as he Red Devils had a very young team that saw players in the 8th grade play… To see the SCHSL Class AAAA Softball Playoff Brackets click here…. Go Big Red

Laurens HS

  • Baseball: Laurens 4 – Catawba Ridge 3…  The Raider baseball team defeated the Catawba Ridge Copperheads 4-3 last Friday night at home to remain in the winners’ bracket of the Class AAAA playoffs…  The Copperheads are a familiar foe for the Raiders especially in playoff action and the Copperheads had defeated the Raiders 9-5 in a tournament down in Georgetown earlier in the season… The Copperheads struck first scoring a single run in the 3rd inning but the Raiders scored 2 in the bottom of the inning… Hunter Nabors singled and the Copperhead pitcher had an errant throw that allowed Jireh Brown and Zay Puller to score on the play… The Raider last two runs came in the 4th inning when Avery Madden had a sacrifice bunt to score Coleman Coker and Hunter Nabors had a sacrifice fly that scored Owen Pridgen… Both teams had bases loaded situations and were able to work out of them during the game… The Copperheads did not go quietly as they scored their last 2 runs in the 7th inning to make the final 4-3 Raiders… The Copperheads actually outhit the Raiders 7-6 with Zay Pulley being the only Raider with more than one hit as he had 2… Asher Goss got the win going 6 innings giving up 3 runs only 2 of which were earned while striking out 8 and walking 3…  Grayson Ledford got the save… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.
  • Up Next for the Raiders… The Raiders do not play again until this Friday and who they hoist is to be determined by a pair of games this week… Greenwood will host Northwestern tonight and the winner of that game will travel to Catawba Ridge Wednesday… The winner of that game will travel to Laurens Friday and have to beat the Raiders twice to advance while the Raiders only have to win one game… The game Friday night is scheduled to start at 6:30 and the “if needed” game will be sometime on Saturday…To see the Class AAAA Baseball Bracket click here.

  • Softball… I need to do some catching up with the Red Devils softball team as they played two games against the Mauldin Mavericks one on Thursday and one on Friday to close out their regular season.
    • Thursday: Clinton 11 – Mauldin 10… On Thursday the Red Devils traveled to Mauldin and escaped with an 11-10 win… The Red Devils trailed 9-7 going into the 7th inning where they put 4 runs on the scoreboard and then held the Mavericks to a single run in the bottom of the inning to take the come-from behind 11-10 win… A double by both Kamryn Campbell and ME-Me Smith plus a Maverick error scored the 4 runs in the 7th inning… Me-Me Smith led the Red Devils at the plate going 4 for 4 with 3 doubles and driving in 2 runs… Sophia Sullivan also had 3 hits for the Red Devils… Smith was the pitcher of record when the Red Devils scored the 4 big ruins in the 7th so she gets the win…  Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.

    • Up Next for the Red Devils… The Red Devils finish the season with a 12-10 overall record and 2-6 in region play finishing 4th in the region and making the playoffs…. • Baseball: WW King 4 – Crusaders 3… The Laurens Academy Crusader baseball team closed out its regular season last night at home taking on the Knights of WW King… It was a heart breaking loss for the Crusaders as the Knights scored 1 unearned run in the top of the 7th inning to take a 4-3 win over the Crusaders…. The Crusaders scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning when Nathan Bell doubled driving in the two runs… They scored another run in the 3rd inning on a Knight error…By the time the 5th inning had ended the Knights had tied the game 3-3 to set the stage for the 7th inning unearned run that proved to be the winning run as the Crusaders had runners on second and third base with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th but just could not get the clutch hit to tie or win the game… The Crusaders outhit the Knights 6-3 but also had more errors (5-4)…. Evan Asalone and Caleb Hardy each had 2 hits  to lead the Crusaders at the plate and one of Hardy’s was a double… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored… The crusaders end the regular season with a 5-10 record and await the release of the SCISA baseball brackets tomorrow (Saturday) to find out what is next for them.
