  • Clinton Wrestling… I need to do some catching up on how the Red Devil wrestling team did this year.
      • Team Playoffs… The team qualified for the SCHSL Playoffs and was seeded #5 in the upper state headed into the playoffs… On 2-1-25 they defeated #12 seed Abbeville to advance to the second round… Then they took on #4 seeded Ninety Six who had defeated #13 seeded Eau Claire… I hate to have to report that the Ninety Six Wildcats defeated the Red Devils to eliminate them from the Class AA playoffs which were eventually won by the Red Devils region foe Chester who defeated Buford 65-17
    • Individual 2A-1A Qualifier… After the State Team Tournament finished, members of the Red Devil wrestling team took part in the 2A-1A Qualifier at Chesnee… The following Red Devils finished high enough (8th or better) to make it to the SCHSL State Individual Tournament.
      • Cooper Stinson – 106 lbs. – finished 6th
      • Cameron Jackson – 113 lbs. – finished 6th
      • Prince Bluford – 120 lbs. – finished 6th
      • Emanuel Lagroon – 144 lbs. – finished 7th
      • Kane Wooten – 150 lbs. – finished 6th
      • Henry Cody – 165 lbs. – finished 4th
      • Owen Lawton – 190 lbs. – finished 8th

    • State Individual Tournament… Now the above young men qualified for the State Class 2A-1A- Individual Tournament on Feb 21st and 22nd but none of them were able to finish in the top 4 in that tournament…. Never the less, congratulations to them on making into the state Individual Tournament… There were a lot more wrestlers that didn’t make it than did!

  • Lady Red Devils 40 – Griffins 30
    • The Lady Red Devils hosted region foe the Lady Griffins of Fairfield Central last night and I am pleased to report that they took a 40-30 win over the Griffins after trailing 15-13 at the half… It was a slow first half that saw both teams have trouble getting the shots to drop as the score was 7-4 Clinton after 8 minutes of play… The Red Devils also had trouble rebounding in the first half and misses all 3 free throw attempts in the first half.
    • Coach Gardner challenged them at the half to get more physical, drive the lane as 3-point shots were not falling and get to the boards in the second half…. The Red Devils responded and took the lead for good about half way through the third quarter as their defense caused the Griffins to turn the ball over more than in the first half and they also controlled the boards in the second half… The Red Devils led 25-22 at the end of the third quarter and the fact that they started making free throws down the stretch helped them pull away to the win.
    • The Griffins Jazz McMillian led all scorers with 18 points which was only 1 point above her per game average… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Bryanna Belton who finished with 14 points… McKenzie Clark and Ry’Daija Mars scored 9 points each, Kemaria Shelton 6 and Mylayja Thompson 2.
  • Up Next… With the win the Red Devils punched their ticket to the Upper State Finals against another region foe Eau Clair which defeated still another region foe Mid-Carolina 54-43 in Columbia last night… The game will take place next Tuesday at The Florence Center at 6:00 pm… The winner of that game will play for the state championship at noon on Saturday in the same location…. • Boys Basketball: High Point 67– Clinton 48… Yesterday I reported to you that the Red Devils boys’ basketball team traveled up to High Point Academy last Friday night and all I had at that time was the final scorer of the game… The Grizzlies ended the Red Devils season by taking a 67-48 win over the Red Devils… At that time, I did not have any scoring details on the game, but I do now… The Red Devils started out a little slow as they trailed 23-19 at the half and 47-39 going into the fourth quarter… There the Grizzlies outscored the Red Devils 20-9 to take the 67-48 win… The Red Devils had two players scoring in double-digits as Tushawan Richardson finished with a game-high 16 points and Zy Butler 12… Devin Swindler finished with 8 points, Owen Glenn 4, Terry Smith 3, Kylen Calhoun 3, and CJ Jones 2… Coach Glenn said “Our kids played hard all season, we didn’t end how we wanted to but we have tons of memories that will las a lifetime…. #GBR”… The Red Devils finish the season with a very respectful 15-9 record having finished second in the region behind Fairfield Central with an 8-2 region record… By the way, Fairfield Central was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Liberty by a score of 43-41… None of the teams in Clinton’s region survived the first round other than the Red Devils.

  • SCISA Finals Girls Basketball: Cross 45 – Crusaders 29
    •  When you start a season having lost 8 players from last year’s team and have 2 freshman and a 7th grader on your team and playing most of the game, you don’t reasonably expect to have as good a season as was the last one…   Well that was the case with the Laurens Academy Crusader varsity girls team this year that defied those expectations going 18-8 overall and winning their region with a 4-0 record, the region tournament and making it into the final game of the SCISA Class AA Championship game.
    • Today I hate to have to report that the Crusaders “special season” came to an end Saturday in Sumter where the lost to the Cross Schools Stingrays by a score of 45-29… The Crusaders actually led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter but then turnovers and the Stingrays offense heating up the rest of the way while to Crusaders offense did not improve led to the loss… Sadie Bruyere was the only Crusader scoring in double-digits as she finished with 10 points… By the way she was named to the All-State Tournament team… Braylee Burke finished with 9 points, Abby Howard 4, Madisyn Graham 3, Mackenzie Runyans 2 and Caroline Robinson 1.
    • Needless to say that Coach Jason Marlett expressed nothing but pride in how his team improved throughout the season and played fearlessly… As you might expect, he can’t wait to see what the future hold for the team… The Crusaders will only lose one senior this year and that is Abby Howard who stepped up and played very well for the Crusaders especially down the stretch…. Congratulations to the Crusaders on a very good season!

Thornwell… Catching up on some odds and ends at Thornwell… Congratulations to:

  • KJ Singleton for being named to the Region 1A  Boys All-Region Team
  • Zaylen Washington for being nominated for the Class A All-State Basketball Team

  • Girls Basketball: Red Devils 49 – Cardinals 19… The Lady Red Devils hosted the Lady Cardinals of Landrum last night in second round action of the SCHSL Class AA Playoffs… Good news for Red Devil fans as they took a dominating 49-19 win over the Cardinals… The Red Devils led 16-8 after 8 minutes of play and 22-12 at the half and were never really threatened after that… The Cardinals who had seen mostly zone defenses during the regular season simply had trouble with the Red Devils sticky man-to-man defense… They committed twice the number of turnovers in the first half than Clinton thus giving the Red Devils more opportunities to score…The Red Devils dominated the defensive boards in the second half thus giving the Cardinals very few second chances at the basket… The Red Devils were led in scoring by McKenzie Clark who finished with a game-high 16 points and Bryanna Belton was also in double-digits with 11 points 9 of which came from behind the 3-point each… Others scoring for the Red Devils included Ry’Daijia Mars and Mylayja Thompson who scored 5 points each, Kemaria Shelton 4, and both Symiah Floyd and Nah’shia Wright finished with 2 points each.

Clinton HS

  • Boys: Clinton 54 – Saluda 49… The Red Devil boys’ varsity basketball team opened play in the SCHSL Class AA Playoffs last night hosting the Tigers of Saluda… After a slow start, the Red Devils prevailed by a score of 54-49… The Red Devils were cold in the first quarter as they trailed 8-5 at its end… They started to heat up the offense in the second quarter scoring 13 points while holding the Tigers to just 4 points to take an 18-12 lead into the locker room at the half… The Red Devils put 26 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter to make the score 44-25 heading into the last 8 minutes of the game where the Tigers did try to come back but the Red Devils did not allow them to come all the way back… The Tigers did have 3 players scoring in double-digits and the Red Devils had only one and that was Tushawan Richardson who finished with a game-high 24 points… Terry Smith and Devin Swindler both finished with 8 points, Zy Butler 6, Kylen Calhoun 3, DJ Clark and Owen Glenn 2 while Jarred Willard rounded out the Red Devil scoring with 1 point…… A quick check of the Class AA brackets early this morning shows that High Point Academy took a 68-45 win over Chesterfield last night and they have a #1 seeding going into the playoffs while Clinton had a #2 seeding so I do believe the Red Devils will be traveling to High Point on Friday to take on the Grizzlies… I’ll try to confirm that today and get back to you tomorrow.
  • Girls: A reminder that the lady Red Devils will be hosting Landrum Cardinals tomorrow night at 6:00 pm in second round action.

Laurens HS

  • Basketball
    • Girls: Camden 74 – Raiders 20… The Lady Raider basketball team traveled down to Camden last night to take on the Lady Bulldogs in first round action of the Class AAAA playoffs… Camden came into the game with a 16-6 record averaging 68 points per game and giving up an average of 42 points per game… After the game I think the Raiders may have been asking themselves how did the Lady Bulldogs lose those 6 games as they rolled to a 74-20 win over the Raiders… They led 19-3 after 8 minutes of play and 33-12 at the half and never looked back though the Raiders never stopped trying to come back… The Bulldogs are a quick, pressing team that also rebounded well as they forced the Rides into about 30 turnovers while they had about 15… They had 5 players score in double-digits while the Raiders were led in scoring by senior Zoe Young who finished with 8 points… Ty Jones scored 6 points, Keyorick Yeargin 4 and Nyri Allen 2… Congratulations to the Raiders and Coach Cade for making the playoffs for the first time in several years… As a matter of fact, congratulations to both the Raider varsity basketball team for showing much improvement this year and making the playoffs.

Laurens Academy

  • Girls Basketball…  The Lady Crusades have advanced to the semi-finals in the SCISA Class AA basketball tournament…They will be taking on Dorchester Academy at Wilson Hall in Sumter tomorrow night at 6:00 pm.

Thornwell

  • Girls: Lee Central 76 – Thornwell 6… The Lady Saints traveled over to Bishopville to take on the Lady Stallions of Lee Central last night in the opening round of the Class A playoffs… The Lady Stallion came into the game with an 18-4 record averaging 52.1 points per game while giving up 27-5… The Lady Saints found out that the Lady Stallions were the “real deal” as the Stallions took a 76-6 win over the Lady Saints…. The Stallions held the Saints scoreless until about 4 minutes left in the game when the Saints Jessie Pitts scored the first two points for the Saints… She later added another one and Kendra Wilson also scored for the Saints… This was the first time that the Lady Saints made the playoffs since Thornwell reopened and marked the last time Madi Landrith and Karleigh Porter put on the Saints basketball uniform…. My thanks to Cindy Pitts for helping me cover the saints this season.

Sports Report for Friday, 2-14-2025 Updated

Local Notes

SCHSL Basketball BracketsIf you would like to see all the brackets for the South Carolina High School League for all the classifications both boys and girls, click here.

Clinton HS… The Red Devil varsity basketball teams traveled to Fairfield Central HS to take on the Griffins last night in their final game of the regular season … Updated: I now have more details on the games.

  • Girls: Clinton 39 – Griffins 18… The Red Devils completed their season and finished first in the region as they took a 39-18 win to make them 10-0 in region play… They outscored the Griffins 16-7 in the first half and 23-11 in the second half to take the win… Bryanna Belton and Nah’shia Wright led the Red Devils with 8 points each… McKenzie Clark finished with 7 points, Nah’shia Wright 6, and both Ry’Daijia Clark & Kemaria Shelton finished with 5 points each… The team will start playoff action Monday at home against an opponent yet to be determined.
  • Boys: Griffins 47 – Red Devils 44… I really hate to have to report that the boys fell to the Griffins by a score of 47-44… This is especially heartbreaking because if the Red Devils won by 2 point or more, they would be region champs… They actually led 40-32 going into the fourth quarter where the Griffins outscored them 15-4 to take the come-back win… The Red Devils had two players scoring in double-digits as Tushawan Richardson finished with 22 points and Devin Swindler 11 points … Owen Glenn finished with 6 points, CJ Jones 3 and DJ Clark 2… The Red Devils finished second in the region, and I do believe they will be hosting a first-round playoff game on Tuesday.

Laurens HS

  • Basketball up Next…
    • Boys…  The Raider boys’ team will open the playoffs at home Monday against an opponent yet to be determined at the time of this posting.

  • Wrestling… I want to wish all the Raider wrestlers good luck as they travel to Westside HS in Anderson to start their participation in the Upper State Qualifier for the individual State Wrestling Tournament next weekend. It starts tonight and concludes tomorrow… If they finish as one of the top six wrestlers in their weight class they will be in the State Tournament next weekend

Thornwell at Ware Shoals… The Saints boys’ basketball team traveled to Ware Shoals last night for a “play-in” game to the state playoffs next week… Very simply whoever won moves on and the loser is done.

  • Boys: Hornets 97 – Saints 74… The Saints ran into a very hot Hornet team that seemed like they could but most any shot they wanted to and make it including some that looked more like a prayer than a shot… The Hornet with the most sting last night was Charles Callaham who scored 45 points and I do believe that if he had the tire off the bus he could have made that go through the basket… The Saints never stopped competing and really did not play that bad against a quick Hornet team… The Saints were led in scoring by KJ Singleton who scored 33 points and Zaylen Washington with 20 points… Kemonte Pitts scored 7 points, Jacob Wilson 6, Parker Workman 4 and both Malik Anderson and Ke’zavious Kinard scored 2 points each…. The Saint finish the season with an 8-12 record.
  • Up Next in Basketball…The lady Saints finished in 6th place in the region and made it into the playoffs… They will start the playoffs Tuesday on the road against an opponent yet to be determined.

Whitmire at Thornwell… The Saints hosted the Whitmire Wolverines in the last games of their regular season… These were very important games as playoff spots were on the line.

  • Girls: Saints 46 – Wolverines 17… The Lady Saints wasted little time in jumping on the Wolverines as they used a pressing defense and clutch rebounding to take a 20-2 lead after 8 minutes of play and 32-6 going into the locker rooms at the half and then went on to take a 46-17 win… The Saints just would not let the Wolverines get back in the game… The Saints were led in scoring by Jessie Pitts who had a game-high 10 points… Others scoring for the Lady saints included Aly Jeter who scored 8 points and Kendra Wilson, Karleigh Porter, and Kenli English all scored 6 points… Rounding out the Saints scoring Makenzie Godfrey and Kelyn Spurgeon both scored 2 points each… The Lady Saints improve to 6-10 in region play and 7-10 overall.
  • Boys: Saints 64 – Wolverines 54… There is also good news where the Saints boys team is concerned as they took a 64-54 win over the Wolverines… The Saints started slow as the Wolverines outscored them 13-8 in the first quarter… The second quarter was a different story as the saints offense heated up and they outscored the Wolverines 27-7 to take a 35-20 lead at the half… Both teams then played to just about a draw in the second half except in the 2 minutes of the game when the Wolverines outscored the Saints substitutes 8-0… Just like in the girls’ game, a pressing defense and clutch rebounding helped propel the Sainte to the win… The saints had two players score in double-digits as Zaylen Washington finished with 27 points and Keith Watts 17… Other putting points on the scoreboard included Gibson Partee who finished with 9 points, Jacob Wilson 6, Parker Workman & Kemonte Pitts 2 each while Malik Anderson had 1 point to round out the Saints scoring… The Saints improve to 7-9 in region play and 8-12 overall.
  • Up Next in Basketball…In Region I Class A the top 6 teams will make it to the playoffs… With the win last night, the Lady Saints will finish sixth in the region and will start playoff action next Tuesday (2-18-25) against an opponent and at a time to be determined… I can tell you they will be on the road… As for the boys, they are not yet assured of a playoff spot as there is a log jam in the #6 spot… They will have a “play in” game tomorrow where the opponent, time and location will be determined today… I’ll try to have that information for you tomorrow morning. –

Laurens Academy

  • Varsity Basketball… The Laurens Academy Crusaders hosted another set of Crusaders last night, the Shannon Forest Crusaders…. This was Laurens Academy’s fourth game in 6 days.
    • Girls: Shannon Forest 31 – Laurens Academy 13… The Lady Crusaders had a problem getting their offense going last night against SCISA Class 3A Shannon Forest as they fell to Shannon Forest 31-13… Shannon Forest led 12-3 after one quarter of play and held the Crusaders scoreless in the third quarter… Sadie Bruyere led the Crusaders with 5 points while both Brooklyn Senn and Madisyn Graham scored 3 points… Braylee Burke rounded out the Crusaders scoring with 2 points… The Lady Crusaders are now 13-6 overall and 2-0 in region play while Shannon Forest improves to 14-4.
    • Boys: Shannon Forest 50 – Laurens Academy 21… The news is also not good where the boys’ team is concerned as Shannon Forest took a 50-21 win… The Crusaders really had trouble getting their offense going in the first quarter as Shannon Forest held them scoreless while Shannon Forest scored 14 unanswered points…  Garrett Murphy led the Crusaders with 6 points… Also scoring for the Crusaders Jay Brown finished with 4 points, Aiden Graddick 3, Garrison Vaughn 2, Lucas Li 2, Micha Strait 1 and Elijah Hornberger 1… If you are adding up the Crusader points they are 2 points shy of 21 and that can be explained by the fact that one of the Shannon Forest players made 2 points, shooting into the Crusader basket… The Crusaders are now 6-13 overall and 0-2 in region play.
  • Basketball up Next… The Crusaders MaxPreps schedule shows them on the road tomorrow when they travel up to Greenville to take on the Greenville Tech Charter Warriors…. Girls’ action starts at 2:00 pm

Middle School Basketball… All games start at 5:00 pm unless otherwise noted with girls’ game first followed by boys’ game… Note: coaches very often change schedule without telling me… To see the season master schedule click hereNOTE…Dixie and Thornwell do NOT have middle school girls teams this season so the 5:00 pm start will be for the boys’ game… Results from yesterday’s games:

  • Boys: Gray Court-Owings 37 – Dixie 34 in OT… The GCO Tigers hosted the Dixie Green Hornets in boys’ action only and they had to go to overtime to do it but I am pleased to report the Tigers took a 37-34 win… Dixie led 17-12 at the half but the Tigers fought back and tied the game 27-at the end of the third quarter and fought to a 7-7 time in the fourth quarter to make the score 34-34 and send the game into overtime… There the Tigers held the Hornets scoreless while Dylan Abramowitz scored a two-point field goal and Wesley Collins hit a free throw to lift the Tigers to a thrilling 37-34 win… Collins led the Tigers in scoring with 17 points while Abramowitz was also in double Digits with 13 points… Jaylin Anderson finished with 5 points and Mason Lang 2.
  • Hickory Tavern at Whitmire… The only score I had reported to me was the girls’ score and its good news for Panther fans as they won 19-16… I do not have any scoring details and also the final score in the boys’ game was not reported to me.
  • Laurens Middle at Ware Shoals… No scores reported to me, please ask the coaches to do so.
  • Boys: Sanders 53 – Thornwell 23… The once beaten Sanders Yellow Jacket boys’ team traveled over to Thornwell last night to take on the Saints and came home with a 53-23 win… The Saints hung in there the first quarter of play as the Yellow Jackets only led 89-8 at its end, but extended that lead to 27-13 at the half and then rolled on to the 53-23 win against the scrappy Saints… Sanders just had too much height and quickness for the Saints to overcome… Sanders’ Travion Robinson finished with 24 points while the Saints were led by Tilan Gant who finished with 9 points… Others scoring for Sanders included jay Harris with 9 points, Deaunte Hill 8, Marcus Miller 6, De’Vontay Mosley 3 and Zykius Miller 3… Also scoring for the Saints Keith Watts scored 7 points, Brayden Young 3 and both Caleb Clinkscales and Wyatt Lyman finished with 2 points each.
