Sports Report for Wednesday, 4-14-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Tennis: Clinton 6 – Union 0… Yesterday the second day in a row the Red Devils boys’ tennis team was on the road and for the second day in a row they came home with a 6-0 win with yesterday’s win coming over the Union County Yellow Jackets… Ike Waldron, Anders Orr, Connor Donley, Nathan Meade and Edwin Orr again all took one-sided wins over their opponents in single’s action…  In doubles action, only the #2 doubles team composed of Eli Brewer and Henry Curtis played yesterday and they took a comfortable 2-set win… The team is now a perfect 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in region play… They will be right back in action today as they host the Emerald Vikings at 5:00 pm on the courts at CMS.
  • JV Baseball: Clinton 12 – Emerald 2… Yesterday in the first game of JV-Varsity doubleheader at CHS, the Red Devil JV team took a 12-2 win over the Vikings in 5 innings… The Red Devils put 3 runs on the board in the first inning and that would prove to be all they needed but went ahead and added runs in each inning but the third… The Red Devils outhit the Vikings 11-1 and four different Red Devils had 2 hits in the game… Two of the four were Zane McClendon and Harrison Moore who both had a double and a single and drove in at least 2 runs… To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here.
  • Varsity: Clinton 11 – Emerald 1… In the varsity game I do believe that the Red Devils were victorious over the Vikings by a score of 11-1 in five innings… The reason I say believe is that I have not heard anything “official” for any of my usual Red Devil sources and I am getting my information from the Emerald GameChanger account… According to that source the Vikings scored their only run in the first inning and Clinton scored all their runs in the last 3 innings putting 3 runs on the board in the third, 2 in the fourth and 6 in the fifth thus ending the game on the 10-run rule… If I get more “official” details on the game I will pass them on to you later.
  • Softball Drops Pair to Broome…  The Red Devil softball teams were in action last night as they hosted the Broome Centurions… Now all I have on their games is the final scores and I hate to have to tell you that it is not good news for Red Devil fans as the JV team lost 13-7 and the varsity 14-0 to the Centurions… Now the Red Devil softball teams will be in action today as they travel to Laurens to take on the Raiders in a JV-Varsity doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm… we do plan on broadcasting the varsity game on Real Radio WLBG and streaming live on the internet at wlbg.com starting about 7:00 pm… This will be the “rubber game” of the season as the Red Devils defeated the raiders in a preseason tournament at CHS and then the Raiders defeated the Red Devils in their regular season game at Clinton.

Laurens HS:

  • Raider Varsity Baseball Adds Game to Schedule… Earlier this week Coach Tori Patterson was able to add another game to the Raider varsity baseball schedule… The Raiders will be traveling to Blue Ridge tonight to take on the Tigers with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm… I believe Blue Ridge scores their game live on GameChanger and if that is the case I will try to keep you updated on how the game is going during our broadcast of the Clinton at Laurens varsity softball game tonight which starts about 7:00 pm.

Laurens Academy:

  • Baseball: LA 13 – Oakbrook Prep 1… The Laurens Academy Crusader baseball team traveled up to Spartanburg yesterday to take on the Knights of Oakbrook Prep… The ride back most likely seemed shorter than the one going up as the Crusaders took a 13-1 win over the Knights in 5 innings… The game was tied 1-1 after one inning of play but after that it was all Crusaders as they scored in every inning but the last (fifth) and the big inning was the fourth where they plated 7 runs… The Crusaders outhit the Knights 13-6 and were aided by 5 Knight errors… Judson Watkins led the Crusaders at the plate as he went 4 for 4 with a double and drove in 5 runs… To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here The Crusaders are now 7-9 on the season and are scheduled to travel to Heathwood Hall tomorrow.
  • Softball: Union Christian Day 15 – LA 0… The Crusader softball team was also in action yesterday as they travelled over to Union Christian Day School to take on the Eagles…  All I have on that contest is the final score and I hate to have to report that the news is not good for Crusader fans as the Eagles took a 15-0 win… The team is scheduled to host Spartanburg Christian tomorrow at 5:00 pm.

Sports Report for Tuesday, 4-13-2021

Local Notes

Clinton HS:

  • Tennis: Clinton 6 – Broome 0… Yesterday the Red Devil bots’ tennis team traveled up to Broome HS to take on the Centurions in region action… Good news for Red Devil fans as the team took a domination 6-0 win over the Centurions… The reason I say dominating is that in singles action the scores were very on-side in Clinton’s favor… Ike Waldron, Anders Orr, Connor Donley, Nathan Meade and Edwin Orr al took one-sided wins over their opponents in single’s action… Only the #2 doubles team composed of Eli Brewer and Henry Curtis played was challenged as they took a 6-4, 3-6, (10-8) win … The team is now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in region play… The team travels to Union County today in a 5:00 pm region conquest.

Laurens HS: The Raider baseball teams traveled to Woodruff HS to take on the Wolverines yesterday while the softball team hosted the Wolverines.

  • JV Baseball: Laurens 11 – Woodruff 0…  In JV baseball action, the Raiders put 3 runs on the board in the top of the first inning and then went on to take an 11-0 win over the Wolverines in 5 innings… The Raiders outhit the Wolverines 11-3 and took advantage of 3 Wolverine errors and 5 walks issued by a pair of Wolverine pitchers… Hunter Nabors, Rylan Bagwell and Bennett Edwards each had 2 hits to lead the Raiders at the plate… Joshua Hughes picked up the win pitching all but the last out striking out 6 and walking none… To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here and to see the game’s scorebook click here… The Raiders are 11-0 on the season.
  • Varsity Baseball: Laurens 14 – Woodruff 3… Now the news is also good for Raider fans where the varsity baseball team is concerned as they took a 14-3 win over the Wolverines in 5 innings… The Raiders only outhit the Wolverines 8-6 but once again 3 Wolverine errors, 8 walks issued by a pair of Wolverine pitchers and 5 hit Raider batters all aided the Raider cause… Zack Faulkner, Austin McNuer and Jack Yarborough each had 2 hits for the Raiders with one of Faulkner’s and Yarbrough’s being a double… To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here and to see the game’s scorebook click here… The team will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Blue Ridge.
  • Softball: Woodruff 10 – Laurens 2… In varsity softball action at Laurens, the Wolverines took a 10-2 win over the Raiders… The reasons for the Wolverine win are simple, first they outhit the Raiders 9-2 and secondly the Raiders committed 7 errors which aided the Wolverine cause tremendously… The Raiders got their runs in the first inning without a hit as a hit batter, pair of walks and a Woodruff error were the cause of the two runs being scored… Taylor Hardin and Alyssa Rowe were the only Raiders to get a hit in the game…    To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here and to see the game’s scorebook click here… The team will be back in action Wednesday as they host the Clinton Red Devils in doubleheader of JV & varsity action starting at 5:00 pm… We do plan on bringing you the varsity game starting about 7:00 pm here on Real radio WLBG and streaming live on the internet at wlbg.com…. By the way the Raider JV softball team fell to the Wolverines in a very one sided game in the Wolverines favor.

Laurens Academy: The middle school and varsity baseball team traveled down to WW King yesterday to take on the Knights.

  • MS: LA 14 –WW King 2… In the middle school game, the Crusaders put 4 runs on the board in the top of the first inning and then went on to take a 14-2 win over the Knights…  The Crusaders simply outhit the Knights 8-1 and took advantage of 3 Knights errors and walks 7 batters in the game…. Lee Carroll and Elijah Hornberger each had 2 hits for the Crusaders in the game… To see the box core and associate stats click here
  • Varsity: WW King 11 – Crusaders 0… In varsity action the Knights took an 11-0 win over the Crusaders in 5 innings and I am sorry but that’s all the information I have on this game.

PC Notes:

  • Football: PC 29 – Davidson 24… On Saturday the Blue Hose football team closed out its spring football home season with a 29-24 win over the Davison Wildcats avenging a 41-24 loss to the Wildcats earlier in the season…. One of the reasons that PC was able to take the win was the fact that senior Colby Campbell had a single game DI record 25 tackles during the game…  PC clinched the victory with an interception from Rod Haygood in the final minute of the contest… Tyler Huff finished the game with 21-25, 198 passing yards and 2 touchdowns… Senior Keith Pearson totaled 11 catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. For more information on this game click here… OC is now 3-3 on the season and will play its final game of the spring season on the road this Saturday as they travel to Drake for a 2:00 pm contest with the Bulldogs.
  • Softball… The Blue Hose softball team had a tough weekend as they dropped 3 games to the Winthrop Eagles in Rock Hill over the weekend… On Saturday they dropped the first game of a doubleheader to the Eagles by a score of 3-1 and the second game by a score of 3-0… If you would like more information on these two games click here… Then yesterday they lost 2-0 to the eagles… For more information on this game click here… PC falls to 9-12 overall and 3-9 in Big South play… The will host Western Carolina in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 this Wednesday.

Braves: The Braves hosted the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend in their first 3 home games of the season…  For more information on any specific game(s) mentioned below, click on the score at the beginning

  • Friday: Braves 8 – Phillies 1… On Friday the Braves simply outhit the Phillies 11-6 and they played long-ball with their hits… Ronald Acuna Jr hit his third homer of the season a 2-run shot… Ehire Adrianza also had a pinch hit 3-run homer later in the game and Freddie Freeman picked up his second homer of the season a 2-run shot.
  • Saturday: Braves 5 – Phillies 4… Saturday’s game was much closer but the Braves still one by a score of 5-4… Freddie Freeman picked up his third homer of the season a 2-run blast in the first inning… Ehire Adrianza again had a key pinch hit a double in the seventh inning and wound up scoring the winning run for the Braves.
  • Sunday: Phillies 7 – Braves 6… The Phillies avoided the sweep last night by taking a 7-6 win over the Braves… The game was decided in the top of the ninth inning when the Phillies scored the go-ahead run on a close play at the plate where the Phillie runner was called safe and the call stood (not confirmed) after video review… Being a former umpire I hate to argue the call but I believe I saw enough on the video review to overturn it… One thing for sure, if Bobby Cox was still managing the Braves he would have been tossed after that call… Ozzie Albies, Freddie freeman and Ronald Acuna Jr. all had homers in the game… The Braves are now 4-5 on the season and remain at home tonight to start a 4-game series with the Marlins.

Sports Report for Friday, 4-9-2021

Local Notes:

PC Notes:

  • Football: PC 23 – Stetson 3…  Well in case you missed it, the Blue Hose football team traveled down to Deland, Fla. last Saturday to take on the Stetson Hatters… The trip back was a happy one as the Blues Hose took a 26-3 in over the Hatters to make their season record 2-3… Jeffery Smith had a lot to do with the win as he picked off two Stetson passes and returned them 30 & 52 yards for a pair of pick-sixes… Now if you would like to read more about this contest click here… PC will be back in action tomorrow hosting the Davidson Wildcats in an 11:00 am contest at Bailey Memorial Stadium… Two things about tomorrow’s game… First it is the final home game of this short spring season… Secondly it will be the second time the two teams have met this season… As you may recall PC traveled to Davidson back on March 20th and after leading 10-7 at the end of the first quarter wound up falling to the Wildcats 41-24… To see the recap of that game click here.
  • Baseball Series with Radford Postponed… The PC baseball team is 7-10 on the season and their last game was a 5-4 win in 14 innings over UNC- Ashville in Clinton this past Tuesday… If you would like to find out more about that contest click here… The Blue Hose were scheduled to take on the Radford Highlanders in a three-game series in Clinton starting this afternoon… However that series gas been postponed and the reason given was “The series has been postponed due to Radford not being able to meet the minimum squad size standards established by the Big South Conference this season”… Now this is just me “reading between the lines” but my guess is a COVID problem for the Highlanders… They will ty to reschedule the series later in the season and the baseball team will now not be back in action until a week from today when they are scheduled to travel to Longwood for a 3-game weekend series (Weather and COVID permitting).
  • Softball on the Road This Weekend… Now a quick check of the PC softball team finds them with a 9-9 record at this point on the season and they have several games postponed or canceled for various reasons also… They were last in action this past weekend when they traveled up to Gardner-Webb and lost 2 of 3 games in the three-game weekend series… Click here to go to the PC softball schedule where you will find links to those game recap stories… The team is scheduled to travel to Winthrop for a 3-game series starting with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
  • Other Sports… A quick reminder that if you are interested in anything at all about any of the PC sports the web address you need to remember is www.gobluehose.com

Atlanta Braves: catching up with the Atlanta Braves we find they got off to a rough start this season losing their first 4 games of the season before rebounding and taking a pair of 7-inning games from the Washington Nationals on Wednesday… For more details on the following games, click on their score at the beginning.

  • Braves 7 – Nationals 6… They won the first game 7-6 with Ronald Acuňa Jr. leading the Braves going 3-4 with a double, a RBI and scored 2 runs.
  • Braves 2 – Nationals 0…   The second game was more of a pitcher’s duel as the Braves won 2-0 on the strength of a 2-run pinch hit homer by Pablo Sandoval in the seventh inning.
  • Braves Home Opener Tonight… The Braves finally get to play at home tonight as they start a seven game home stand at Truist Park with the first team in town being the Phillies that swept them in the opening series in Philadelphia to start the season…. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 pm and I believe it can be seen on Bally Sports South a new network for me this season… Hope my satellite TV provider has that in my package.

Local Notes:

Laurens County Speedway Race Results… The new season of racing began last Saturday at the Laurens County Speedway which locally is called the Darlington of Dirt… They have a couple of new divisions this year the Thunder Bomber Futures and the Young Guns… Taking a look at the main event results in each division you find:

  • Thunder Bomber Futures… This division was created for younger drivers or drivers who haven’t won a Thunder Bomber main event in recent years make up the field… The goal was to create more opportunities for drivers to gain exposure at the track instead of getting lost in the fold of the heavily saturated Thunder Bomber field… Grant Burton took the first win of the season in the division and his first win ever at the LCS… Travis Mabe finished second and Brady England third.
  • Monster Mini Stock 4…  Rod Tucker and Phillip Wilson battled for the lead in this rare caution less race for about half its distance but in the end Rod Tucker took the checkered flag with Phillip Wilson and Scott Nelson being the next two across the finish line.
  • Young Guns… Young Guns is the second new division at the LCS this season and it is for drivers ages 10-15 who are getting their “feet wet” in the racing world… Most of the drivers her are second and third generation racers… Trenton Jamieson son of multi-time LCS winner Travis Jamieson. Wound up winning the race… Joshua Wilson son of Josh Wilson took second and Jayme Woodward finished third.
  • Thunder Bombers… James Hudson and Dan Lawson won their heat races and started on row 1… Hudson took the lead on the first lap and was able to hang on for the win with Lawson finishing second and Scott Pulley third.
  • 602 Crate Late Model… Veteran Rod Tucker eventually took the win in this main event with the next two drivers seeing the checkered flag being Colby Cannon and Clay Thompson in that order.
  • Limited late Model… Taylor Puckett worked his way through the field to finish first in going away this main event with Larry Timms finishing second
  • Front Wheel Drive… Travis Jamieson took the win in the Front Wheel Drive main event… He had to do that to keep his son Trenton from “out-bragging” him after Trenton took the win in the Young Guns division… Wayne Taylor finished second edging out Jake Barnett who finished third.

Pro Golf

Laurens HS:

  • Baseball: Laurens 12 – Wade Hampton 4… The Raider varsity baseball team hosted the Generals of Wade Hampton HS last night at Ed Prescott Field in non-region action and the news is good for Raider fans as they took a 12-4 win over the Generals… …. The Raiders got on the board first scoring a single run in the bottom of the first inning when Thomas Willis led off with a single and later scored on a RBI single by Zach Faulkner… The Generals responded by putting two runs on the board in the top of the second inning and both runs came in on bases loaded walks… The Raiders took the lead for good when they plated 3 runs in the bottom of the third to go up 4-2… A bases loaded walk to Sully Pinson and a sacrifice fly by Zac Rice drove in the runs… The Raiders broke the game open with 5 runs in the fourth inning as Zack Faulkner, Austin McNuer and Sully Pinson all had RBI doubles in the inning… The Generals got their last two runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 9-4 Raiders… The Raiders added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Austin McNuer drew a bases loaded walk and then added the last two runs in the sixth inning when Thomas Willis doubled driving in a run and Jack Yarborough brought in the other with a sacrifice fly to right field… According to my unofficial scoring of the game the Raiders outhit the Generals 12-3 and were aided by 6 General errors… Both teams also had more walks than the coaches like as 3 General pitchers issued 6 walks while 3 Raider pitchers issued 10 walks… Thomas Willis led the Raiders at the plate going 4 for 4 with an RBI and scoring 3 times… To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here and to see the game’s scorebook click here…. • C-Team Baseball: Laurens 6 – Westside 0… Now I owe an apology thot the Raider baseball C-team… Yesterday I reported they lost to the Westside Rams 6-2 on Monday night but what I failed to mention that was the second game of a doubleheader at Ed Prescott Field and that they won the first game 6-0 (both games were just 5 innings long)… The big inning for the Raiders was the second where the Raiders put 4 runs on the board and then added a single run in the third and fourth innings… To be honest with you the Raiders only outhit the Rams 4-3 in the game and 7 walks issued by 2 Ram pitchers along with a couple of errors aided the Raiders cause… Jireh Brown was the only Raider to get more than 1 hit as he went 2 for 2 with a double, a RBI and a walk… Braden Yarborough got the complete game win giving up no runs, 3 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2…To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here.

  • LA 14 – Greenville 2… In the first game the Crusaders put 9 runs on the board in the first inning and then went on to take a 14-2 win over the Hurricanes… The Crusaders only outhit the Hurricanes 7-2 but took full advantage of 9 walks, a few hit batters and a couple of errors by the Hurricanes… In the big first inning Thomas Lowry  had 2 RBI singles and Brett Young had one and the other runs were largely due to walks and hit batters as previously mentioned… Later in the game Jordan Hudson also had an RBI single… Lowry was the only Crusader with more than one hit as he went 2 for 3 driving in 4 runs… He also picked up the complete game win giving up the 2 runs only 1 of which was earned while striking out 11 and walking only 3…. To see the box score of the game click here.
  • Greenville 5 – LA 3…. Now the news is not as good fir Crusader fans where the second game is concerned as the Hurricanes took a 5 -3 win… The Crusaders scored first getting a run in the top of the first inning Brett Young doubled and later scored on a passed ball… Greenville got all 5 of their runs in the bottom of the first inning without a single hit as walks, errors and a hit batter or two were the reasons they scored… The Crusaders final two runs came in the top of the fifth (and final) inning and they were scored without a single hit as the Hurricanes had problems also with walks, errors, hit batters and wild pitches… Both teams had only 1 hit each and if you want to see the box score of the game click here…. The Crusaders are now 6-8 on the season and return to action next Monday when they travel to WW King.

  • Hammond Leaving CHS… I happened to be checking out a story in the Greenville News yesterday about coaching hires for the new Fountain Inn HS that will be opening this fall to freshman… One of the names mentioned in the list of coaching hires was Clinton High’s John Michael Hammond as the boys’ soccer coach… I reached out to Coach Hammond yesterday and he confirmed the story… He also had the following comments “Leaving CHS will be bittersweet, both as a teacher and as a coach.  I’ve grown close to so many people here, and will surely be a Red Devil for life.  From a CHS soccer perspective, it will be incredibly difficult to leave my Clinton United soccer family.  I plan on attending as many CHS games as I can over the next couple of years, and have already promised the boys that I will be at their graduation. From a FIHS perspective, I am absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to come back home to Greenville County and build a new program from the ground up.  It’s a unique opportunity to establish brand new traditions and create excitement around the program, and I think that founding the JV program here at Clinton is an experience that will help me do just that.” The Greenville News article mentioned that his Red Devil teams have set school records for winning percentage and fewest goals allowed… The article also mentioned his excellence as a classroom teacher… At CHs he is listed as the Project Lead the Way Engineering teacher and if you click here it will carry you to a posting titled Mr. Hammond’s Lab where you can find out more about what he teaches and also about him… By the way the principal at FIHS is former CHS principal Maureen Tiller… Congratulations to Coach Hammond!

  • JV Baseball: Laurens 7 – Emerald 1… In JV action prior to the game the Raiders were also victorious as the defeated the Vikings 7-1… The Raiders trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the second inning where they put 4 runs on the board and added another 3 in the third in route to the win… In the 4-run second inning Zee Williams, Hunter Nabors, and Asher Goss all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning… The Raiders had 7 hits in the game with Hunter Nabors and Bennett Edwards each getting 2 hits and one of Nabors’ was a double… Asher Goss got the start on the mound and picked up the win going 4 innings giving up the 1 earned run on 1 hit while striking out 19 and walking 1… To see the box score and some statistics on the game click here and to see the games’ scorecard click here.

Laurens Academy:

  • Baseball: LA 4 – Newberry 0… The Crusader varsity baseball team hosted the Eagles of Newberry Academy last Friday… The Crusaders scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning and that would prove to be all the runs thy needed as Tomas Lowry and Jordan Hudson in relief held the Eagles to just 3 hits as the Crusaders went on to take a 4-0 win… Two bases loaded walks by the Eagles in the first inning brought in the Crusader runs in the inning… The Crusaders scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Thomas Lowry driving in one of them with a double… The Crusaders had 6 hits in the game and Lowry was the only Crusader to get more than one (2) with one of them being a double… He also picked up the win going 6 innings giving up just 1 hit while striking out 10 and walking just 1… To see the box score and some statistics on the game click here …The Crusaders evened their record at 5-5 and are scheduled to hoist Richard Winn tomorrow in a JV-Varsity doubleheader.
  • MS Baseball: Hurricanes 10 – LA 2… The middle school baseball team also played Friday as they hosted the Grenville Hurricanes… The news here is not as good as it was in varsity action as the Hurricanes took a 10-2 win over the Crusaders… Sorry no other details.
  • Softball: Union Christian 21 – LA 0… Also last Friday the Crusader softball team hosted the Eagles of Union Christian Day School… A quote I have heard often is that some days you get the bear and other days the bear gets you and that was the case last Friday as the Eagles took a 21-0 win over the Crusaders… Simply put the Eagles outhit the Crusaders 17-2 and 6 walks issued by 2 Crusader pitchers along with a couple of Crusader errors proved to be the downfall for the Crusaders… Also the fact that one of the better players for the Crusaders was injured early in the game and had to come out did not help either… The two hits by the Crusaders were a double by Lillie Davenport and a triple by Madison Loe

Sports Report for Friday

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Boys Soccer: Emerald 4 – Clinton 2… The Red Devil boys’ soccer team traveled down to Emerald on Wednesday night and I did not get the score of the match until yesterday so let me get you up to speed o the results of that match… I’m afraid it’s not good news for Red Devil fans as the Vikings took a 4-2 win… The Red Devils actually led 2-1 at the half but the Vikings scored 3 unanswered goals in the second half to take the win… Jeremiah Gonzalez and JP Snelgrove each had a goal for the Red Devils… For more information on this match and comments from Coach Hammond click here
  • Today at Clinton HS… The Red Devil athletic calendar shows that the girls’ soccer teams will be hosting Union County today while the boys will be on the road to Union County… It also shows that the Red Devil softball teams will be in action today hosting the Saluda Tigers with the JV game starting at 5:30… Now one other thing that is NOT showing up on the Red Devil athletic calendar but was posted on Twitter is that the baseball C-team will host Ninety Six today at 5:00 pm for a doubleheader of baseball.

Laurens HS:

  • Boys Soccer: Greenville Hurricanes 3 – Laurens 0… Another score from Wednesday that I just found out about yesterday is that the Raider boys soccer team lost to the Greenville Hurricanes by a score of 3-0 at home… No other details available.
  • Today at LDHS… The Raider JV and varsity baseball teams are scheduled to host the Emerald Vikings today in a doubleheader of baseball action… The first pitch on the JV game is scheduled for 5:15… Prior to the varsity game the Raider will be playing tribute to the late Charles Peterson by retiring his #23 baseball jersey… Peterson arguably one of the best multi-sport athletes ever to play at Laurens District 55 HS… Peterson, who passed away on Sept. 13, 2020, after a battle with COVID-19 was at the time of his death a scout with the St. Louis Cardinals and an assistant football coach at Spring Valley High School…. Now we do plan on brining you the varsity game here on Real radio WLBG and we will go live just before the first pitch.

Laurens Academy:

  • Today… According to the Laurens Academy Crusader baseball schedule that I have the Crusader middle school team is supposed to be hosting the Greenville Hurricanes starting a 4:30 and then after that game finished (about 7:00 pm) the varsity baseball team will play host to their archrival Newberry Academy Indians.

Athletics Today Postponed… well with the threat of bad weather today high, both School District 55 and 56 have postponed any and all athletic events and practices today…Hopefully things will get back to normal tomorrow.

Clinton HS:

  • Girls Soccer: Clinton 4 – Emerald 0… The girls’ soccer team was able to squeeze in a match yesterday afternoon despite the rain and having to go through a lightning delay down at Emerald HS… Good news here as they scored 4 second half goals to take a 4-0 win over the Vikings in region action… Laurens Wargo had two of the Clinton goals (one on a penalty kick) while Morgan Benson and Reese Gowan had a goal each… For a few more details on the match and comments from Coach Benson click here... The Red Devils are now 9-0 on the season and are scheduled to host Union County tomorrow night.

Laurens HS:

  • Girls Soccer: Greenville Hurricanes 2 – Laurens 0… The Warrior Raider soccer team was also able to squeeze in a match at home yesterday but unfortunately I have to report that they fell to the Greenville Hurricane by a score of 2-0… Sorry no other details.
  • Boys Track… Something I let fall through the cracks last week that I’ll catch up on now is the fact that the Raider boys’ track team was in action last week up at Hillcrest where they finished second to Hillcrest but ahead of Gaffney… According to a post by Coach Jawon Stephenson the team competed very well and had several individual and team winners… To see that post click here
  • Girls Track…  The girls track team was also in action at the same meet up at Hillcrest last week and the news here is not quite as good as the team finished third behind Hillcrest and Gaffney… If you would like more information on how they did in the meet click here… Both team were supposed to be back in action today but as I have already mentioned that will not happen because of the threat of bad weather today and will now be back in action Monday when they travel down to Greenwood HS.

PC Notes:

  • Football: PC 31 – Morehead State 16… In case you missed it, after suffering a 31-24 loss in overtime to Gardner-Webb in their first game of the season two Saturdays ago, the Blue Hose football team rebounded this past Saturday to take a 31-16 win over the Eagles of Morehead State in their home opener… PC led 24-3 at the half and did give up a couple of second half TDs but was not really threatened… For more information on this game click here… The team will travel to Davidson this Saturday for a 1:00 pm contest with the Wildcats.
