  • 2024 Awards Banquet
    • Last night the The Ridge, the Laurens County Touchdown Club held its annual Awards Banquet… There were several speakers at the meeting and the Keynote Speaker was Mr. Brian Mance… He is a former Clemson football player and he has coached at various levels until some neurological illness caused him to suddenly be paralyzed from the neck down… His story was an inspiration and very motivational… If you would like to read more about him and his struggle to overcome physical problems, click here.

    • After he spoke several players were honored as being Players of The Week since the club’s last meeting…. Then it was time for the club to honor the three high schools and one college player who had won the Lakelands FCA Character Awards… In alphabetical order they are Nathan Bell from Laurens Academy, Noah Garrett of Clinton HS, Noah Roberts of LDHS and Warner Bush of Presbyterian College.

    • The next order of business was to honor the All-County Team… The members of that team had been announced earlier and if you want to see the complete list of players who made the team, their position and school, click here.
    • The final item on the agenda was to name the Coach of the Year and Player of the Year… Coach Corey Fountain of Clinton HS was named the Coach of the Year as he guided the Red Devils to a Class AA State Championship this past season… For the first time in the club’s history, two players were named as Co-Players of the Year… The Co-Players of the Year are Garrett Murphy of Laurens Academy and Tushawan Richardson of Clinton HS… Both had stats some impressive it was hard for the club to single out one of them.

    • A video was shot of the meeting that is about an hour and 30 minutes long… At the time of this posting, it was still being processed and uploaded to YouTube… When it becomes available, you will be able to click here to view it…Should be noon today… It takes a while to edit and process a video that long… After that is finished, I will create a slideshow of photos taken last night at the meeting and it will be available later in the day by clicking here.
    • Congratulations to Coach Fountain, Garrett Murphy, Tushawan Richardson and all the other players honored last night!

Local Notes

Clinton HS

Basketball… The Red Devil varsity basketball teams hosted the Newberry Bulldogs in their last games before the Christmas break last night.

  • Girls: Clinton 54 – Newberry 19…  The Lady Red Devil basketball team pretty much had its way with the Bulldogs as they rolled to a 54-19 win over Newberry… The Red Devil defense held the Bulldogs to single-digit scoring in the first three quarters and the Bulldogs only scored 11 in the final quarter… The Red Devils led 27-4 at the half…Nah’shia Wright led the Red Devils with 15 points and Emma Patterson was also in double-digits with 11 points…. The team is now 7-1 on the season and will return to action this coming week end in a tournament down in the Charleston area.
  • Boys: Clinton 75 – Newberry 54… In the last game of the day, the Red Devil boys’ team was also victorious by a score of 75 – 54… The Red Devils 46-22 and 60-34 going into the final quarter… It seems that Tushawan Richardson definitely has his basketball “touch” back in shape after leading the Red Devils to the Class AA State Championship as quarterback a couple of weeks ago as he had a game high 31 points… Devin Swindler was the only other Red Devil in double-digits as he had 17 points… The team will be back in action this coming weekend in a tournament down in the Charleston area.

Sports Report for Monday, 12-23-2024

Local Notes

Clinton HS

Basketball

  • Up Next… The Red Devil MaxPreps schedule shows that the varsity teams will be hosting Newberry today… The action will start at 11:00 am when the JV girls’ teams take to the court… The JV boys will play next followed by the varsity girls about 2:00 pm and the varsity boys about 3:30 pm.

Laurens HS

Basketball

  • Freshman Basketball: The raider 9th grade boys’ basketball team participated in a Christmas Tournament up in Greenville County this past weekend and the MaxPreps schedule shows they were to have played 3 games, but I only have scores on two of them.
    • Friday: Easley 47 – Laurens 28… On Friday the Raiders fell to Easley by a score of 47-28… simply put, the Green Wave held the Raiders to single digits in every quarter but the third (11) as they led 22-12 at the half and pulled away for the win… Kam Moore scored 10 points for the raiders and Sy Westfield had 9.
    • Saturday… The MaxPreps schedule for the team shows that the Raiders were to play two games on Saturday, but I only have the score for one of them… The one score that I do have is that the Wren Hurricanes defeated the Raiders by a score of 56-41… The Raiders led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 25-22 at the half… The Raiders stayed close in the third quarter but were outscored 16-7 in the fourth quarter as the Hurricanes pulled away for the win… No individual scoring details on this game.
  • Up NextBoth the boys’ and girls’ team will next see action when they participate in tournaments after Christmas.

Laurens Academy

  • Girls: Laurens Academy 44 – Greer Middle College 34… Saturday the Lady Crusaders traveled up to Taylors to take on the Greer Middle College Blazers… The trip back most likely seemed a little shorter than the one going up because the Crusaders took a 44-34 win…. I don’t have a lot of details about the game other than to tell you that Braylee Burke led the Crusaders with 15 points and Sadie Bruyere had 9 points… Coach Marlett was also quick to point out that Abby Howard had 5 points which gave the Crusaders a big lift when they needed it in the second half and she also made some key defensive plays… The Crusaders are 5-3 on the season and according to their schedule on MaxPreps will be back in action on Saturday, January 4th when they travel to Ware Shoals to take on the Hornets in a 10:00 am game.
  • Boys… last Friday and Saturday the Crusader boys’ basketball team was down in Newberry participating in a Holiday Tournament.
    • Friday: Laurens Academy 55 – Wardlaw 45… Friday the Crusaders started their participation in the Tournament by taking a 55-45 win over the Wardlaw Patriots… The Crusaders only led by 1 (23-22) at the end of the first half but came out of the locker room after the break and put 20 points on the scoreboard while holding the Patriots to just 8 points and then going on the win… The Crusaders gad 4 players scoring in double-digits and were led by Garrett Murphy’s 14 points… Braydon Burke and Garrison Vaughn both scored 13 points and Chesney Watkins had 11 points.
    • Saturday: Newberry Academy 47 – Laurens Academy 31… The results from Saturday are not what I like to report as the Newberry Academy Eagles took a 47-31 win over the Crusaders… I don’t have any scoring details on this game… I will tell you that previously the Eagles had defeated the Crusaders 36-11 so the Crusaders had a better showing against the Eagles this time and that the Crusaders are 4-5 on the young season.

Middle School Basketball… All games start at 5:00 pm unless otherwise noted with girls’ game first followed by boys’ game… Note: coaches very often change schedule without telling me… To see the season master schedule click hereNOTE…Dixie and Thornwell do NOT have middle school girls teams this season so the 5:00 pm start will be for the boys’ game…. There are no games until after the Christmas break.

  • Boys: Newberry 49 – Clinton 43… The news is not as good in boys’ action as a poor second quarter where the Red Devils scored only 1 point to trail 30-14 at the half put them in a hole they almost climbed out of but fell by a score of 49-43… The Red Devils fought hard in the second half but came up a little short and were led by Tushawan Richardson’s 27 points… Looks like he getting over football… J’shon Nabors was also in double-digits with 16 points The Red Devils are now 2-2 on the season.

Jaydon Glenn TD Club Player of the Week

  • Monday it was announced that Clinton’s junior defensive end Jaydon Glenn was chosen as the Laurens County Touchdown Club’s final Player of the Week for this season because of his performance in the Red Devils 35-6 win over the Barnwell Warhorses in the Class AA State Championship game down in Orangeburg last Thursday… He led the defensive team in points as he finished the game with 4 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 4 quarterback pressures and 2 sacks of the Warhorse quarterback… The Red Devil defense held the powerful Warhorses scoreless except for 1 kickoff return for a TD.
  • About Jaydon Coach Fountain commented “Jaydon has been an unselfish player all year. During Region play he was moved to defensive end and never looked back.  He has worked tremendously hard and been a great asset on the defensive line throughout Region play and the playoffs.  His pressure on the quarterback during the State Championship kept one of their best players uncomfortable all game.  I’m proud of Jaydon and look forward to seeing his continued success.”

    • Freshman Boys: Raiders 35 – Timberwolves 29… The Raider freshman boys were also in action last night and the news is better as they took a 35-29 win over the Timberwolves… The score was tied 17-17 at the half but the Raiders came out hot in the third quarter as they outscored the Timberwolves 14-4 and cruised on to the win…One of the keys for the Raiders was they allowed the Timberwolves few second-chance shots as they out rebounder the Wolves… Sy Westfield finished with 16 points for the Raiders and Kam Moore was also in double-digits with 11 points
    • Varsity Girls: Timberwolves 48 – Raiders 25… In the last game of the evening, the Lady Raider varsity basketball team took on the Timberwolves… The game was close at the half as the Timberwolves only led 17-16… The second half was a different story as the Raiders had too many turnovers and missed shots and wound up losing to the Timberwolves 48-25

 Local Notes

Clinton HS

Red Devils win Class AA Championship 36-6…If you were looking for someone in Clinton yesterday there is a good chance that you would not find them there as it seemed like most of Clinton was in the visitor stands yesterday afternoon down at SC State watching the Red Devils roll to a 35-6 win over the Barnwell Warhorses to capture their first State Championship since 2009.

  • First Quarter… As Coach Fountain put it after the game yesterday, his blue-collar football team wasted little time making their intentions known as they won the coin toss and elected to receive… Then on the second play from scrimmage Tushawan Richardson broke free for a 77 yard TD run and Rhett Gilliam added the two-point conversion to put the Red Devils up 8-0…The Warhorses then answered that with a 90 yard kickoff return by Jordan Peeples but the PAT failed making 8-6 Red Devils with most of the game left… However that would be the last time the Warhorses would put points on the board as the Red Devil defense held them scoreless the rest of the way… The Red Devils answered that going 65 yards in 9 plays with DJ Clark carrying it in from 27 yards out and Lucas Kuykendal kicked the PAT to make it 15-6
  • Second Quarter… The Red Devils started a drive late in the first quarter that ended with 9:33 left in the second quarter when Rhett Gilliam carried it in from 5 yards out… A two-point attempt failed so the score stood 21-6 Red Devils… Neither team was able to score the rest of the half but the Red Devils came close as they drove to the Barnwell 3 yard line on fourth and goal which caused them to turn the ball over on downs with just seconds left in the half.
  • Third Quarter… The Warhorses were able to gain some yards after receiving the opening kickoff of the second half and went for it on fourth and two but their pass fell incomplete… The Red Devils took over on their own 23 yard line and went the distance to score on a 29 yard pass from Richardson to Devin Swindler with 4:57 left in the quarter… Kuykendall kicked the PAT to make it 28-6 Red Devils… On their next possession, the Warhorses again went for it on fourth and one and were stopped cold.
  • Fourth Quarter… The Red Devil defense in the person of Austin Boyd stopped the Warhorses with a pass interception at the Clinton 45 and returned it to the Barnwell 30… Four plays later Rhett Gilliam scored again this time from 8 yards out… Kuykendall then made the PAT to make the score 35-6 Red Devils with 6:49 left in the game… The next two Barnwell possessions ended when they failed to convert on fourth down situations… As a matter of fact, the Warhorses went for it on fourth down 5 times in the game and the Red Devils denied them every time… The Red Devils took over for the last time with 1:25 left in the game and two plays later the celebration was on.
  • Some Stats
    • The Red Devil had 349 yds. of total offense to the Warhorses 155… 311 of Clinton’s yards came on the ground while they held Barnwell to just 35 yards rushing… The Red Devils had 2 pass completions for 28 yards with 1 TD caught by Devin Swindler.
    • Richardson wound up being the leading rusher for the Red Devils as he had 109 yards with the 1 TD of 77 yards… Javen Cook had 87 yards, Rhett Gilliam 58 and 2 TDS while DJ Clark finished with 36 yards and 1 TD.

Laurens AcademyLast Friday the Laurens Crusader basketball teams traveled up to Spartanburg Christian Academy to take on the Warrior for the second time this season.

  • Boys: Warrior 57 – Crusaders 44… A slow start in the first quarter where the Warrior outscored the Crusaders 20-10 pretty much was the difference in the boys’ varsity game as the Warrior took a 57-44 win… After the first quarter the two teams played almost to a draw… Garrison Vaughn led all scorers with 20 points with Brayden Burke chipping in 9 points and Garrett Murphy 8.
  • Girls: Warrior 54 – Crusaders 41… The SCA Warrior took a 54-41 win in varsity girls’ action but this was just about the opposite of the boys game in that in the first 3 quarters the game was close as the Warriors only held a 37-36 lead going into the final quarter of play… Three they held the Crusader to just 5 points while they put 17 on the scoreboard to take a 54-41 win… Braylee Burke led the Crusaders with 11 points while Sadie Bruyere finished with 9 points and Brooklyn Senn 7.
  • Middle School Scores… In middle school action the Crusader girls fell to the Warrior by a score of 14-13 in a tight one where Lorelai Bagwell led the Crusaders with 7 points and in boys’ action the Crusaders fell 32-3.
  • Up Next… The schedule I have shows the Crusader middle school and varsity boys hosting Newberry Academy starting at 4:00 pm and the varsity girls hosting Abbeville at 7:00 pm.

Thornwell

  • Thursday, 12-12… I just found the scores on Thornwell varsity basketball from last Thursday where they traveled to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind to take on the Hornets… In boys’ action the Saints won 70-19 and the girls won 73-8… No scoring details on either of those games.
  • Today… The MaxPreps schedule for today shows the Saints will be traveling up to the Simpsonville area to take on the Green Upstate Owls.
