    • First Quarter… The Griffins won the toss and elected to defer to the second half… The Griffins were hesitant about kicking to the Red Devils as their first two kicks went out-of-bounds… after the Red Devils finally got the ball at their own 41 after Mason Tinsley returned the third kickoff 11 yards, the Red Devils scored in 4 plays as Richardson completed a 22 yard TD pass to DJ Clark and Kuykendal kicked the PAT the score was 7-0 Red Devils with 11:19 remaining in the first quarter… There was no more scoring in the first quarter.
    • Second Quarter… The Red Devils started a 13 play drive late in the first quarter that culminated with a missed field goal… The Griffins then went 80 yards in 6 plays and scored on a 28 yard run by Grier… The PAT made it 7-7… The Red Devils responded going 84 yards in 6 plays with Rhett Gilliam scoring from 1 yard out… The PAT was missed so the score stood 13-7 Red Devils with a 1:10 left in the half… On the ensuing kickoff, the Red Devils forced a fumble and Austin Boyd scooped it up and scored… The two-point conversion failed making the score 19-7 Red Devils at the half.
    • Third Quarter… The Griffins scored the second time they had the ball in the third quarter on a 19 yard run by Diggs and the PAT was added to make it 19-14 Red Devils which was the score going into the fourth quarter.
    • Fourth Quarter… The Red Devils started a drive after the previous Griffin score that ended with 11:54 left in the game when Richardson carried it in from the 7 yard line to make it 25-14 as the two-point conversion again failed… The Griffins responded by scoring again with 9:49 left in the game and with the PAT the score stood 25-21 Red Devils… Clinton marched right back down the field going 52 yards in 7 plays with Richardson connecting with Devin Swindler on what was supposed to be a hook and ladder play…Swindler noticed no one near him so he just carried it in almost untouched from the 17… The PAT was good so the score stood 32 – 21 Red Devils with 6:33 remaining in the game… The Griffins then started back down the field with the drive stalling at the Clinton 33 where they turned the ball over on downs and Javen Cook went  24 yards for a first down, Richardson 25 yards for another and Rhett Gilliam picked up another 15 yards before the horn sounded and the celebration was on.

Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Clinton 31 – Batesburg Leesville 14… The Batesburg-Leesville Panthers came into Wilder Stadium last Friday night riding high and undefeated on the season… When the final horn sounded they left with 1 loss on the season and a little humbler than before the game started as the Red Devils took a 31-14 win.
    • First Quarter… The first half ended in a 14-14 tie as the two teams went after each other like 2 heavy weight fighters… The Panthers got the ball first but fumbled on their own 18 yard line which the Red Devils recovered… Four plays later Javen Cook carried it in from 4 yards out and with Lucas Kuykendall’s PAT the Red Devils led 7-0 with 9:31 showing on the clock in the first quarter… The Panthers scored the next time they had the ball on a 3 yard run by Tanner Watkins to cap a 65 yard drive in 11 plays and with the PAT the score was tied 7-7 with 4:17 left in the quarter.
    • Second Quarter… The Red Devils started a drive in the first quarter that carried over into the second quarter and it ended with the Red Devil’s only turnover on the night as Tushawan Richard’s pass was intercepted near the goal line and returned to the Panther 39 yard line… Ten plays later the Panthers scored on an 8 yard pass play and with the PAT led 14-7 with 5:14 left in the half… The Red Devils then drove down and faced a fourth and goal to go at the Panther 9 yard line when Richardson finding his receivers covered and went to his right and as he was tackled about the one-yard line held the ball out and knocked the pylon down to score with no time on the clock and Kuykendall then added the PAT to tie the game.. Note: Sky 4 happened to be circling above Wider Stadium at the time he scored and they have an aerial shot of that… If you click here you will go to that video and you will have to watch a sort commercial and the shot of Wilder Stadium will be in the last 2 minutes of the almost 8 minute long video .
    • Third Quarter… The Red Devils got the ball first in the second half and picked up a first down but then the drive stalled… With it being fourth down and eight, Kuykendal went back to punt but the snap sailed over his head…  He covered the ball but the Panthers took possession on the Clinton 18 yard line… Three plays later they fumbled and Brett Young fell on the ball to give it back to the Red Devils at their own 17 yard line… Six plays later Javen Cook scored again from the 10 and with the PAT Clinton led 21-14 with 4:34 left in the quarter.
    • Fourth Quarter… The next score in the game with 7:10 left in the game when Kuykendall connected on an 18 yard field goal to make it 24-14 Red Devils… That field goal would have not been possible but for the effort and cool headedness of the holder Mason Tinsley… The snap skidded on the ground back to him and he calmly got it down in time for the kick to give the Red Devils a two-score lead… The Panthers turned the ball over on downs at the Clinton 34 and Javen Cook scored 5 plays later from the 10 and with the PAT the score stood 31-14 Red Devils… He had a 50 yard run in that drive… The Panthers then had a pass intercepted by Mason Tinsley and returned 20 yards to give the Red Devils the ball at their own 45 yard line with 1:40 left in the game… Not long after that the celebration was on as the Panthers looked shell-shocked.
    • Some Stats… The Red Devil had 382 yards rushing and only 11 passing for a total of 393 yards of total offense… The Panthers had 113 yards rushing and 89 passing for a total of 202 yards of total offense… Javen Cook was the leading rusher for the Red Devils with 269 yards on 24 carries and 3 TDs… For the complete stat package and a play-by-play accounting of the game click here.
    • Up Next… The Red Devils will be at home this Friday night as they take on the Fairfield-Central Griffins who defeated Central 48-28 and are 12-1 on the season… More about them later this week.

Local Notes

Sports Schedules for Today

  • Laurens Academy varsity basketball teams host First Presbyterian Academy, 6:00 and 7:30
  • Raider boys’ basketball takes on Irmo at 6:30 in the Sports Impact Invitational Tournament in Spartanburg.

Clinton HS

  • Red Devils 48 – Cyclones 20… The Clinton Red Devils hosted the Chester Cyclones in round two action in SCHSL Class AA playoffs last Friday night… Tornados (Cyclones) are rayed on the rated on the Fujita Scale from 1-5 with them 1 beginning the smallest to monster type 5 which wreck everything… Well Chester was more like a Type 1 and Clinton would have been at least a Type 4 as the Red Devils took a 48-20 win over the Chester Cyclones… If you recall recent games the opposition had an advantage in time of possession (though they did not score much) while Clinton often scored on big play reactively short drives… That was not the case Friday as the Red Devils had the almost 2 minutes more than the Cyclones) and relied on what call “old style” Red Devil football having longer drives and more plays that ate the clock up keeping the ball out of the Cyclones hands.
    • First Quarter…The Red Devils led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter of play as they punted to end their first possession and then scored the next 3 times they had the ball on two runs by Rhett Gilliam (2 & 30 yards) and Javen Cook had a 40 yard run… Lukas Kuykendall kicked the 3 PATs.
    • Second Quarter…The only score in the second quarter was on a 7 yard pass from Tushawan Richardson to Noah Garrett with Kuykendal adding the PAT to make it 28-6 at the half
    • Third Quarter… In the third quarter Chester had the ball first and scored on a rush but missed the 2-point conversion… Two possessions later, the Red Devils scored on a 5 yard rush by Tushawan Richardson but the PAT failed making the score 34-12 Red Devils and that was the score at the end of the third quarter.
    • Fourth Quarter… The Red Devils next score came on their second possession of the fourth quarter and was set up when Austin Boyd intercepted a Cyclone pass at the Clinton 42… Angelo Cromer then broke loose on a 45 yard run to the Chester 13 and then 2 plays later carried it in from the 4 yard line…  Lukas Kuykendall kicked the PAT making it 41-12 Red Devils… The Cyclones then score on a 72 yard run on their first play from scrimmage and made the 2-point conversion to make the score 41-20 Red Devils…  Chester tried an onside kick that the Red Devils covered it and 2 plays later KJ Vance carried it in from the Chester 11 and Kuykendal added the PAT to make it 48-20 Red Devils and that was also the final score.
    • Some Stats… The Red Devils had 432 yards rushing (Chester 131)… Rhett Gilliam had 165 yards and 2 TDs with Javen Cook had 130 yards and a TD while… Angelo Cromer and Tushawan Richards also had a rushing TD… Passing the Cyclones had 177 yards while Richardson went 6-9 for 52 yards with no interceptions and 1 TD to Noah Garrett.
    • Mores Stats… If you would like to see the complete stat package which has a play-by-play accounting of the game click here.
    • Next… The win means that the Red Devils will be playing this Friday (11-29) and will be hosting the Batesburg-Leesville Panthers who defeated Andrew Jackson last Friday 49-14… The Panthers are coached by former Raiders Head Coach Gregg Lawson.

Laurens Academy

  • Eagles 43 – Crusaders 6… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to WW King last Friday night to take on region foe Richard Winn for the SCISA 8-Man Football Championship…. The Eagles came into the game undefeated and averaging 51.3 points per game while giving up 15.6 points per game… The Eagles were just too fast, too strong and too deep in players and rolled to a 43-6 win over the Crusaders… The Eagles led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter and 37-0 at the half and then scored another 6 points in the third quarter to make the core 43-0 and the game was finished with a running clock… One thing the Crusaders had was heart… They fought to the final buzzer and scored their only points of the game with 8:35 left in the game on a 4 yard run by Ethan Collins at the end of a 12 play drive that covered 75 yards.
    • Stats… The Crusaders Ethan Collins went 15 for 25 in the passing department for 155 yards and did throw an interception and no TDs… The Crusaders finished with 176 yards rushing with Garett Murphy having 114 of those yards… Caleb Hardy caught 10 of those passes for 71 yards and Garrett Murphy caught 4 passes for 66 yards… To see more Crusader stats on the game click here.
    • Final Thoughts… Congratulation to the Crusader and Coach Jolly Doolittle for finishing as runner-up in SCISA 8-man football with a 10-4 record with 3 of their losses coming at the hands of Richard Winn.

  • Bell Chosen TD Club Player of the Week… Monday it was announced that the Crusaders linebacker and tight end Nathan Bell has been chosen the Laurens County Touchdown Club’s Player of the Week for his performance in the Crusaders 34-28 overtime win over the Jefferson Davis Raiders down in Blackville ;last Friday night… The win propelled the Crusaders into the SCISA 8-Man Championship game this Friday at WW King… Nathan led the Crusaders on defense with 18 total tackles, one sack, 4.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery…  He also played every snap on the offensive line that gained over 350 yards from scrimmage… Head Coach Jolly Doolittle stated, “Nathan is a tireless worker and a relentless competitor… He has played nearly every snap of every game… He is a team-first guy and a true throwback player…  The tougher it gets the better he is!”… He will be honored at the club’s next meeting which is this Thursday at noon out at The Ridge

  • Crusaders 34 – Jeff Davis 28 in OT… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Blackville last Friday night to take on the Jefferson Davis Raiders in a semi-final game of the SCISA 8-Man football playoffs… It was a close game but in the end the Crusaders took a 34-28 win over the Raiders in overtime.
    • First Quarter… The Crusaders took an early 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as Garett Murphy scored twice in the first quarter… The 2-point conversion failed after the first TD but I believe Ethan Collins connected with Caleb Hardy after the second TD to make it 14-0 with 1:16 left in the first quarter.
    • Second Quarter… The Raiders picked up their first score with 11:16 left in the second quarter and converted on the 2-point attempt to make it 14-8 Crusaders… The Raiders scored again with 7:38 left in the half but failed to make the 2-pont conversion so the score was tied 14-14… I believe it was on the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff that Ethan Collins connected with Murphy on a 65 yard TD pass… The Crusaders did make the 2-point conversion to make the score 28-22 Crusaders… Jeff Davis responded by scoring one more time before the half and picking up a 2-point conversion which tied the score 22-22 and that was the score at the half.
    • Third Quarter… The only score in the third quarter was by the Raiders as they scored on a rushing TD with about 7 minutes left in the quarter but failed on the 2-opoint conversion so they led 28-22 going into the final quarter.
    • Fourth Quarter… Both teams’ defense tightened in the fourth quarter but the Crusaders were able to carry  the ball into  the endzone with about 2 minutes left in the game but failed on the 2-point conversion so the game was tied 28-28… I believe that Murphy once again scored but not 100% sure.
    • Overtime… The Raiders had the ball first and the Crusaders were able to hold them out of the endzone as they had a fourth and goal from the 3 but the Crusaders defense held to give the Crusaders a chance to score… It did not take long for the Crusaders to score as on the first play from scrimmage Garrett Murphy carried the ball in from the 10 yard line and the celebration was on.
    • Up Next… The Crusaders will be back in action this Friday night as the travel to WW King in Batesburg to take on the region foe Richard Winn for the SCISA 8-Man Football Championship… More on this game as the week goes on.
