Laurens HS

  • AC Flora 20 – Laurens 17… The Laurens Raider traveled to Columbia last Friday night to take on the AC Flora Falcons and played their best game of the season but still came up short as the Falcons took a 20-17 win… Coach Porter is not one to make excuses but the truth be known,  the  Raiders are handicapped by injuries especially in the quarterback position as the top 2 are out forcing the Raiders to play a wildcat style offense which considering everything the coaches and players have done well with… The defense has done well basically using the bend but don’t break approach.
    • The Falcons scored first on a 24 yd. pass play late in the first quarter and led 7-0… The Raiders only score in the first half came on a 36 yd. field goal by Brock Franklin with just over 2 minutes left in the half.
    • Flora scored again in the 3rd quarter on another pass play but missed the PAT to make it 13-3 Falcons.
    • The Raiders recovered a Flora fumble at their own 48 yd. line and 2 plays later Nehemias (Nemo) Fernandez carried it 49 yds. for the score and with Franklins PAT the score stood 13-10 just before the end of the 3rd quarter.
    • Flora scored about midway through the 4th quarter to make it 20-10 Flora.
    • The Raiders answered that driving back down the field and scoring on a 1 yd. run by Denari Lee-Jackson and Franklin again made the Pat to make the score 20-17 Falcons.
    • The Raiders tried to mount a late drive, but a couple of untimely penalties put then behind the chains and they turned the ball over on down and AC Flora ran out the Clock
    • Some Stats:
      • Total Yds.: Flora 363 (212 rushing) – Laurens 213 (182 rushing)
      • Penalties: Flora 7-62, – Laurens 9-91
      • Nemo Fernandez led both teams in rushing as he had 215 yds. in 26 carries and scored 1 TD.
      • To see the entire stat package and a plat-by play accounting of the game click here.
    • Up Next… The Raiders get a week off as they have no game this coming Friday and this comes at a great time as they have a good chance of getting most of their injured players well… The return home to take on the Lexington Wildcats Friday, Sept. 27th.

Middle School Football… To see the middle school master school football schedule click here… Please remember these schedules can change right up to game day without my knowing about it… The results reported to me are:

  • Dixie 36 – Hickory Tavern 16… The Hickory Tavern Panthers traveled over to Due West yesterday and the ride home must have seemed longer than the one coming back as the Green Hornets defeated the Panthers 36-16… I have received some information that Dixie did not have a “true” middle school team as they played some 9th graders… About the only other thing I can tell you is that that Sam Parsons had a couple of long TD runs (about 80 yards) and also the 2-point conversions.
  • Sanders 28 – Gray Court-Owens 0… At KC Hannah Stadium yesterday afternoon the Sanders Yellow Jackets kicked off their season with a 28-0 win over the GCO Tigers… The Tigers were able to move the ball but just could not finish drives as the Sanders defense stepped up to knock down several key passes and  both teams had penalties with the Tigers coming more often than not at a bad time.

Sports Report for Friday, 8-30-2024

Local Notes

 Clinton HS & Laurens HS

  • JV Football Clinton 6 – Laurens 0… The Red Devil JV football team took a hard fought 6-0 win over the Raiders last night at KC Hannah Stadium… The Red Devils went 63 yds. in 14 plays with Graydon Watkins tossing a 4 yd. TD pass to Zydarrion Butler with 7:35 left in the first quarter and made that stand up as they went on to the win… The two-point conversion failed… Both teams were able to move the ball but just could not finish the drives… In the Raiders case, penalties and some high snaps to the quarterback were often Drive killers… Both teams defense did step up at times to stop the other team… The raiders Caleb Gilchrist intercepted a Red Devil pass in the endzone to keep the Red Devils off the board early in the third quarter and at the end of the game with about 2 minutes left the Red Devils stuffed the Raiders on fourth down to get the ball back and run out the clock… Clinton is now 1-0 while the Raiders fall to 0-1.

  • Raiders Travel to Clinton… Unless you have just come out of a coma, been returned from and alien abduction from outer space or just don’t care about sports (why are you reading this in that case), you know that the Raiders will be traveling to Clinton tonight to take on the Red Devils in the “County Championship” … Both teams lost their season opener last Friday as the Red Devils lost to Woodruff 40-36 at home and the Raiders lost to Hillcrest 16-0 at home… The Raiders are looking to break a 3-game losing streak to the Red Devils and the Red Devils want to be able to hold up 4 fingers when the game is over… They expect a large crowd so plan on getting there early… I hope you can come out and support your favorite team but if you can’t, we do plan on brining you the game here on Real Radio WLBG and streaming live on the internet at www.wlbg.com… We will start our coverage at 6:20 with the Friday Night Insiders.

Laurens Academy

  • Crusaders at Home Tonight… The 2-0 Laurens Academy Crusaders will have their home opener tonight at Todd Kirk Field as they host the Wardlaw Patriots in a non-region matchup… The Patriots are 1-0 on the season having defeated King Academy last week 32-8… The Patriots are a team that historically the Crusaders have had trouble with and they hope to turn that around tonight… A big crowd at Todd Kirk Field could help then make that happen… Go Crusaders!

Its Finally HereWeek 0 of the High School Football Season

Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Red Devils Open With Woodruff at Home… The Red Devils open their season tonight and find themselves in Class AA down from Class AAA but they have kept some old familiar foes and rivals on their non-region schedule… Tonight they open with just such a team as they host the Woodruff Wolverines who has been a region foe for many years… Last year woodruff went 4-7 overall and 2-2 in region play while Clinton went 10-3 and went undefeated in region play losing in the 3rd round of the playoffs to BHP 27-24…  Last year the Red Devils took a 36-20 win over the Wolverines at Woodruff… Brett Sloan is back for his second season as the head Wolverine…The Wolverines quarterback TJ Morris is back for his senior year as well as a couple of other key players so look for them to improve this year… Let’s hope that occurs after they play the Red Devils tonight… There are also some special ceremonies tonight before the game as one of the local officials Mr. Tommy Stribble will wear the white hat tonight for his 700th contest that he has officiated in in 50 years and 50 years ago the Red Devil Tennis team under the direction of Coach Keith Richardson won consecutive state championships will be honored…Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Raiders Host Hillcrest… The Raider fans are looking forward to tonight’s opening game at KC Hanna Stadium as the Greg Porter era at LDHS starts… Porter comes to Laurens from Greenville HS and before that he was head coach at Hillcrest HS where he guided the Rams to a state championship and posted a 66-44 record there and went 45-15 at Greenville… This is the first time that Coach Porter has played Hillcrest… Hillcrest went 10-3 last season made it to the third round of the playoffs losing to then region foe JL Mann 12-13 who also defeated the Rams in the regular season 42-35… The Raiders lost to the Rams 55-9 last year in the opening game of the season and Coach Porter and this year’s Raiders will do all they can to prevent that… We will start our Friday Night Insiders at 5:20 and go live to the stadium about 6:40 pm
  • JV Football Team Traveled to Hillcrest Last Night… The Raider JV team traveled to Hillcrest last night to take part in a 3 team scrimmage… The Raiders took on the Fountain Fury for 1 quarter of play and fell by a score of 20-14… They then took on the Hillcrest 9th grade team for a quarter of play and that wound up a 6-6 tie…. The last quarter they played was against the Hillcrest JV team and the score there was 8-0 Rams… The Raiders were able to move the ball, but fumbles seemed to be a problem as they had turnovers in each of the quarters that hurt them… The defense gave up some big plays including some long yardage scoring.

Laurens Academy

  • Crusaders Travel to Newberry … The Crusaders will head down to Newberry Academy tonight for a 7:30 pm game with the rival Eagles… The Crusaders are coming off the season opening 56-20 win against the Cambridge Academy Cougars in Greenwood last Friday night while this is the season opener for the Eagles…. Last year the Eagles went 2-9 on the season and 0-6 in region play… They struggled during the first part of the season where the Crusaders took a 58-0 in early September at their place but by October, they had improved an only loss to the Crusaders 32-20 at Todd Kirk Field… Coach Doolittle expects them to have one of the best teams they have had in years so this could be tough one…Good Luck to the Crusaders!

 Laurens County Touchdown Club

  • Yesterday at noon the Laurens County Touchdown Club met for the first time this season at The Ridge on Exchange Drive… Garret Murphy was honored for being the clubs first Player of the Week for his role in the Crusaders 56-20 win over Cambridge Academy last Friday night… Mr. Tommy Stribble one of our local area multi-sport officials was also honored as he will be officiating his 700th contest tonight at the Woodruff vs. Clinton football game… I have personally have had the privilege of officiating a few of those 699 contest with him and will tell you will not find a better official anywhere and he an even better man… He starts is 51st year officiating tonight’s Woodruff vs. Clinton game… After that Coach Steve Englehart of PC briefly spoke and the three local high school coaches too center stage… Check back early next week for a video of the meeting.

The Red Devils, No. 2 in the Class 2A poll, were dominant with its spread version of the wing-T… DJ Clark made some big plays at running back, and their offensive line could compete on any level and is led by Division I prospect Tre Aiken.”…To see the posting which out with other midland jamboree scores and other information, click here.

  • Crusaders 56 – Cambridge 20…  The Laurens Academy Crusaders opened their season with a bang last Friday as they traveled to Greenwood to take on the Cambridge Academy Cougars and defeated them 56-20 with a running clock in the second half… The Crusaders got the ball first and on the opening kickoff Spires McCameron retuned it for a little over 70 yards and Caleb Hardy carried it in for the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 Crusaders with 11:48 showing on the clock and it was pretty much all Crusaders from there as they led 44-14 at the half
    • How it happened:
      • After the kickoff return for a score, the Crusaders held the Cougar and forced a short punt.
      • The Crusader took over on their own 40 yd. line… Eight plays later Garrett Murphy scored from 11 yds. out and Ethan Collins picked up the 2-oiint conversion to make it 16-0 Crusaders with 5:25 left in the 1st quarter.
      • The Cougars then fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Nathan Bell to give the Crusaders the ball at the Cambridge 26 yd. line… Three plays later, Spires McCameron carried it in from 10 yds. out but the conversion failed so the score stood 22-0 Crusaders with 4:26 left in the 1st quarter.
      • The Cougars finally got on the scoreboard with 3:24 left in the quarter as they scored on a 55 yd. pass but failed on the conversion to make it 2-6 Crusaders with 3:24 ;left in the 1st quarter.
      • The Crusaders then took over on the their on 30 yd. line after the kickoff and drove down the field in 11 plays with Caleb Hardy carrying the ball in from 8 yds. out… Ethan Collins then hit Elijah Hornberger in the endzone for the 2-point conversion to make it 30-6 with 9:35 left in the half.
      • The Cougars did pick up some yardage on their next drive but turned the ball over on downs at their own 49 yd. line… It took the Crusaders just 5 plays to cover that distance and score with Caleb Hardy soring again this time from the 8 yd. line… McCameron picked up the 2-point conversion to make it 38-6 with 5:34 in the half.
      • The Cougars then started having some success with their passing game and scored with 5.9 seconds left in the half and added the 2-point conversion to make it 38-14 Crusaders.
      • The Cougars then tried an onside kick which was covered by Anthony Candelas for the Crusaders at their own 48 yd. line with 4.5 seconds left in the half… A lot of coaches would have taken the knee and head into the break but Ethan Collins decided to carry it in from that spot and scored with no time on the clock to make it 44-14 as the 2-point conversion failed.
      • The second half had a running clock and the Crusaders scored only 2 TDs… The first one saw a Crusader rusher tackled just before crossing the goal line and fumbled into the endzone where Caleb Hardy fell on the ball for the score and the other was on short run by Mason Cooper just before the end of the game.
      • The Cougars did score again between those two Crusader scores on a long pass play and the final was 56-20 Crusaders as all 2-point conversion failed in the second half.
    • Game Stats…below are a few game stats thanks to Luke Tollison and the LA coaching staff.
