Local Notes

Friday Night Insiders Audio… With the Laurens Raiders off tonight there will be no Friday Night Insiders Program… I went ahead and recorder the interviews that would have played tonight if we had a game and have made them available to you…. Click on the titles below to hear those interviews and the college preview that would have played also.

 

Henry Laurens Band Completion Tomorrow… It is time for the Henry Laurens Band Competition this year and it will be held at KC Hanna Stadium tomorrow (Saturday, 9-21-24) and last week I had the opportunity to interview LDHS band Director Patrick Flaniken about the contest… To hear that interview where he tells you most everything about the contest you might want to know, click here.

Clinton HS

  • Red Devils Travel to Daniel… The #2 ranked team in Class AA will travel to take on the #2 ranked team in Class AAAA tonight when the Red Devils travel up to Daniel HS to take on the Lions… Daniel comes into the contest with a 2-1 record and is averaging 38-7 points per game while giving up 28.3…. Their only loss was to JL Mann 28-23 last week at JL Mann… If you would like to see some stats on Daniel this season click here and once you get there you can select individual and team stats… IMPORTANT NOTE… Daniel has provided a brochure that gives you information about tickets, parking and other things you need to know before you get there… To see that brochure click here… Now one last thing… Go Big Red!!
  • JV Football… The Red Devil JV football team was scheduled to host Daniel last night and I did not get any results… If I get them I will bring them to you later.

Laurens HS

  • Raiders Off Tonight… As most Raider fans know, the Raiders are off tonight and the off week comes at a good time as the Raiders who are plagued with injuries need that time to get some players well… The will be back in action next Friday night when the host the Lexington Wildcats at KC Hanna Stadium.

Laurens Academy

  • Crusaders at Home Tonight… The Crusader football team is scheduled to host the King Academy Knight at Todd Kirk Field tonight at 7:30… The Knights are 1-3 on the season and are averaging 12.5 points per game while giving up 31.6… Their only win was against Oakbrook Prep 22-12 and there losses were to Richard Winn 57-6 and Newberry 26-14… Coach Doolittle and the team are not taking the Knights lightly and would like to see a large number of Crusader fans out there tonight to cheer them on… Go Crusaders!

Thornwell

Middle School Football… To see the middle school master school football schedule click here… Please remember these schedules can change right up to game day without my knowing about it… Results from yesterday:

  • Whitmire 40 – GCO 8… No further details on this game.
  • Hickory Tavern 20 – Ware Shoals 14… The Hickory Tavern Panthers hosted the ware Shoals Hornets yesterday and it is good news for Panther fans as they took a 20-14 win over the Hornets.
    • The Panthers led 12-0 at the half as Omar Almanza scored on a 1yd. run and Sam Parsons connected with Brent Ludwig on a 35 yd. TD with both scores coming in the second quarter and both two point conversions were unsuccessful.
    •  The Hornets scored first in the second half but did not convert so the score stood 12-6 Panthers
    • In the fourth quarter the Panthers Sam Parsons carried it in from the 11 yd. line and the Panthers did get the 2-point conversion to make it 20-6 Panthers.
    • The Hornets scored one more time with about 1:25 left in the game and did pick up the 2-point conversion to make it 20-14 Panthers.
    • They attempted an onside kick but the Panthers covered to seal the win.
  • Laurens MS 26 – Thornwell 0… The Thornwell Saints traveled over to Laurens MS to take on the Tigers … The Saints found the Tigers defense a little too strong for them as they fell by a score of 26-0.
    • The Tigers scored in the first series of the game as on a 13 yard run by Logan Bragg but the 2-point conversion failed so the score stood 6-0 Tigers with 4:56 left in the first quarter.
    • The Tigers scored again at the end of their next possession on a 50 yard TD pass from Bragg to Mason Dial… Bragg also carried it in to make the score 14-0 Tigers with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.
    • Neither team was able to move the ball very far until just before the end of the first half when Bragg hit Mason Young with a 25 yard scoring strike to make the score 20-0 Tigers at the half.
    • The Saints fumbled the ball on the first play of their first possession in the second half and it was recovered by the Tigers Jakayden Adams at the Saints 20 yard line… A few plays later Kevin Bryson carried it in from the 7 to make the score 26-0 Tigers as the two-point conversion failed.
    • Neither team was able to generate much offense after that as the Tigers played many players who had not seen action in the first half.
  • Sanders at Dixie… No results reported to me. If you see the coach ask them to do so.
  • Laurens Academy host Newberry… No results reported to me. If you see the coach ask them to do so.

Broadcast Notes… We plan on brining you the following contest here on Real Radio WLBG… If it is a varsity football game we will start our broadcast about 6:20 pm with the Friday Night Insiders… Remember all sports broadcast are streamed live on the internet at www.wlbg.com.

  • FBS AP Poll… The latest FBS AP Poll has a few changes in the top 5… Georgia has dropped from #1 to #2 and Texas has moved up a spot to #1… Ohio State is still #3, Alabama #4 and Ole Miss #5… Spots 6-10 also had changes and are now occupied by Tennessee, Missouri, Miami (FL), Oregon and Penn State… Clemson moved up a spot to #21… To see the entire top 25 AP Poll click here
  • FCS Coaches Poll… The FCS Coaches Poll continues to have South Dakota State and North Dakota State ranked #1 & #2… In our general area, Mercer checked in at #16 and UT Chattanooga comes in at #24 (down from #16)… To see the entire FCS Coaches Poll click here.

  • Braves 15 – Reds 3… In the rubber game of a 3-game series with the Reds in Cincinnati yesterday afternoon, the Braves took a 15-3 win… They outhit the Reds 18-10 and had 6 homers among their 18 hits… Matt Olson (28) had two homers in the game, Michael Harris II (15) also had a pair of homers, Ramon Laureano (9) had a 3-run homer and Jorge Soler (20) also had a 3-run homer…  The Braves will travel to Miami to face the Marlins in weekend series starting tonight.

NASCAR

  • Chris Buescher Wins at Watkins Glenn… Last Sunday over up at Watkins Glenn, Chris Buescher took an overtime win on the road course passing Shan van Gisbergen on the last lap to take the win of the second playoff rave in the Cup Series… For more information as to who was leading at the suspension of the race click here.
  • Playoffs…  Now that the regular season is finished, the 16 Cup Drivers have made the playoffs and are in the Chase for the Cup Championship are now locked in… Joey Logano still leads in the playoff standings. ..   • Schedule This Week… The NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and the Trick series will be at the Bristol Motor speedway Thursday – Saturday…  The Truck Series will Race Thursday night at 8:00 pm, the Xfinity Series Friday night at 7:30 pm and the Cup series will be Saturday night at 7:30 pm also… To see the complete schedule for Bristol including practices and TV availability, click here.

This & That:

T-Ball at the Laurens YMCA…The Laurens Family YMCA will be offering T-Ball this fall for ages 3-5 years old… The cost will be $75 for Y members and $90… Registration is now open but will close on October 15th… You can register at the Y during normal business hours… If you have any questions, contact Haley Queen at 864-984-2626 of email her at hqueen@lakelandsymcs.org… Batter Up!
