 College Baseball

  • Baseball College World Series
  • Saturday: Texas A&M 9 – Tennessee 5The Championship Series of the College Baseball World Series started Saturday night out in Omaha with the Texas A&M Aggies takin a 9-5… The Aggies scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning and then broke the game open in the 3rd inning where they put 5 runs on the scoreboard to make the score 7-1 and went on to the 9-5 win by outhitting the Volunteers 13-12… A&M also outhomered the Volunteers 2-1 and Tennessee also had 3 errors in the game which aided the A&M scoring in that only 7 of the runs scored by the Aggies was earned.
  • Sunday: Tennessee 4 –Texas A&M 1… Sunday the Tennessee Volunteers showed they were still a force to be reckoned with as they took a 4-1 over the Aggies of Texas A&M to force a deciding game 3 in the College world Series… The Aggies used a solo homer in the 1st inning to take a 1-0 led and the game stayed 1-0 until the top of the 7th inning when the Volunteers scored 2 runs on a 2-run homer and then added 2 more runs in the 8th inning on another 2-run homer and then kept the Aggies off the scoreboard the rest of the way taking the 4-1 win… The Tennessee win forces a game-3 in the best of 3 series tonight at 7:00 pm EDT with the winner taking home the BIG trophy.

  • 2024-25 College Football Dates Announced… On June 19th the NCAA announced the dates, times and TV viewing for the expanded college football playoffs this upcoming season… If you have forgotten how they plan to choose the 12 teams that will be in the expanded playoffs click here… The first round of the playoffs will start on Friday, December 20, 2024 and the National Champion will be crowned on January 20, 2025 in Atlanta… To see the entire listing of dates and what bowl games will be involved, click here.

  • Baseball College World Series … The Baseball College World Series is now down to just two teams Tennessee and Texas A&M… These two teams will start a best of three series tomorrow night at 7:30 pm EDT and it can be seen on ESPN… Game 2 will be Sunday at 2:00 pm EDT and it can be seen on ABC (Channel 13 out of Ashville)… If a third game is needed it will be Monday night at 7:00 pm EDT on ESPN… The only thing I can tell you for sure is that an SEC team will win the National Championship… What is that they say- “It Just Means More”?

 South Carolina Hires Two New Head Coaches…Catching up on some news from Columbia concerning 2 new head coaches for the Gamecocks.

  • Baseball – Paul Mainieri… Last week the Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner announced that Paul Mainieri was coming out of retirement to be the new head baseball coach for the Gamecocks… He retired in 2021 as the head coach at LSU where he started there in 2007… Prior to that he was head coach at Notre Dame, Air Force and St Thomas… He has a total of 1,501 win (775 losses and 8 ties) and is the winningest active coach in the NCAA… He won a National Championship at LSU in 2009 and 4 SEC Championships. He is the 31st coach of the Gamecocks… In a related note, he is keeping Monte Lee on as Associate Head Coach and hitting coach… To read the press release on his hiring, click here… To see the press conference where he was introduced, click here…. In a side note, the former Gamecock Coach Mark Kingston did not stay unemployed very long as he has been named the new baseball coach at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska… If you want to read more about that, click here.
  • Softball – Ashley Chastain… The Gamecocks were also in the market for a new softball coach and they up I-77 in Charlotte as they hired a former Gamecock student –athlete and graduate assistant Ashley Chastain… She has been the head coach for the Charlotte 49ers for the last 5 years where she has a 154-96 record… She was a pitcher for the Gamecocks from 2009-11 after starting her colligate career at Columbus State… To see the press release for more about her, click here…To see her introductory press conference click here.

  • Baseball College World Series … The 8 teams that will compete for the DI baseball Championship have started their quest for the NCAA D-I College Baseball Championship… The teams are divided up into 2 brackets with Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Tennessee making up Bracket 1 while NC State, Kentucky, Florida and Texas A&M make up Bracket 2… Interesting, looks like an ACC or SEC team will win the championship… Below are the most recent games and scores and to learn more about the game click on the score.
  • Tuesday Games
    • Florida State 9 – North Carolina 5 In the first game out in Omaha yesterday, ACC rivals Florida State and North Carolina went at it knowing that the loser would be headed home… In the end, the Seminoles took a 9-5 win over the Tar Heels… The Seminoles simply outhit the Tar Heels 14-10 and outhomered them 2 to 1…  For more information on this game click on the score at the beginning.
    • Kentucky vs. Florida… Bad weather moved through the Omaha area last night and the game between Kentucky and Florida had to be postponed until today.
  • Wednesday Games:
    • Florida 15 – Kentucky 4… In the makeup of the elimination game between Kentucky and Florida that was rained out Tuesday night, Florida scored 7 runs in the first inning and then rolled on to a 15-4 win over Kentucky to remain in the hunt for the national title and send the Wildcats home… The Gators simply outhit the Wildcats 14-5 and 3 of their hits were homers.
    • Tennessee 7 – Florida State 2… In the second game out in Omaha yesterday, the Tennessee Volunteers punched their ticket to the CWS Finals starting Saturday by taking a 7-2 win over the Florida State Seminoles… They scored 3 runs in the first inning and then never were really challenged as they outhit the Seminoles 10-7… The Volunteers scored all but 1 of their runs playing small ball while the Seminoles only 2 runs came in the 7th inning on a pair of solo homers.
    • Texas A&M 6 – Florida 0… In the final game last night, after scoring 15 runs in their game yesterday against Kentucky, the Florida Gators found themselves wishing they had saved some of those runs for the nightcap as the Texas A&M Aggies took a 6-0 win over the Gators to punch their ticket into the finals on Saturday… The Aggies scored 2 runs in the first inning and then went to take the win… Almost all of their runs were scored playing small ball except for a 2-run homer by Caden Sorrell in the sixth inning.

    • TBD vs. Texas A&M… At 7:00 pm EDT the Aggies of Texas A&M will take on the winner of the Kentucky vs. Florida game this morning… That game can be seen on ESPN also.
    • NOTE… If Tennessee and Texas A&M win their games, they will advance to the finals of the CWS which start on Saturday… If their opponents should win, it will force a “winner takes all” game tomorrow to see who advances to the finals.

    • Elimination Game: Florida St. 7 – Virginia 3… Sunday in an elimination game, the Florida State sent Virginia home when they took a 7-3 win over the Cavaliers… They led 7-0 before Virginia finally got on the scoreboard in the 7th inning.
    • Winners’ Bracket: Tennessee 6 – North Carolina 1…  In a winners’ bracket game, Tennessee led 4-0 before North Carolina scored their only run in the 6th inning as they rolled on to a 6-1 win over North Carolina to go to 2-0 in the tournament.
  • Monday Games… Bracket 2 games.

  • Friday Games… The Bracket 1 games Friday included:
    • Game 1: North Carolina 3 – Virginia 2…  In the first game of the MCWS, it was an all-ACC game, North Carolina scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 out to take a 3-2 walk-off win over Virginia.
    • Game 2: Tennessee 12 – Florida State, 11… The second game on Friday saw Tennessee take a 12-11 win over Florida State… The Seminoles led 11-8 going into the bottom of the 9th inning where the Volunteers scored 4 runs with 2 out take a walk-off 12-11 win.
  • Saturday Games… The Bracket 2 games Saturday included
    • Game 3: Kentucky 5 – NC State 4… The first game on Saturday saw Tennessee take a 5-4 win over NC State in 10 innings… For the third game in a row, it was a walk-off win with Tennessee homering in the bottom of the 10th inning with 2 out to take the win.
    • Game 4: Texas A&M 3 –  Florida 2… The last game on Saturday saw Texas A&M take a 3-0 lead after 3 innings of play and then hold on to take a 3-2 win over the Florida Gators.
  • Sunday Games… Bracket 1 games.
    • Elimination Game: Florida St. 7 – Virginia 3… Sunday in an elimination game, the Florida State sent Virginia home when they took a 7-3 win over the Cavaliers… They led 7-0 before Virginia finally got on the scoreboard in the 7th inning.
    • Winners’ Bracket: Tennessee 6 – North Carolina 1…  In a winners’ bracket game, Tennessee led 4-0 before North Carolina scored their only run in the 6th inning as they rolled on to a 6-1 win over North Carolina to go to 2-0 in the tournament.

  • Raider Boys Tennis Wrap-Up… Let’s start with a season wrap-up of the Lauren Raider boys’ tennis team… They had a winning record this past season (6-5) and made it to the playoffs for the first time in several years where they defeated Catawba Ridge 5-1 before losing to South Aiken 5-1… Dylan Bank was named to the All-Region Team and Coach Lynne Todd was named the Coach of the year… As for local awards, Ryland Edwards was Rookie of the Year, Westin Coggins won the Raider Spirit Award, Most Improved went to Gibson Partee, Most Competitive went to JP Field, Academic Award to Carson Jenkins, Coach’s Award to Bates Turner and MVP to Dylan Bank… Congratulations to one and all and Coach Todd!

  • Baseball College World Series Starts Today… The 8 teams that will compete for the DI baseball Championship have been set and the action will start today (Friday) with 2 games and the other 4 teams will start tomorrow (Saturday)… The teams are divided up into 2 brackets with Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Tennessee making up Bracket 1 while NC State, Kentucky, Florida and Texas A&M make up Bracket 2… Interesting, looks like an ACC or SEC team will win the championship.
  • Friday Games… The games for today include: Note: All times are eastern time
    • Game 1: No. 4 North Carolina vs. No. 12 Virginia, 2 p.m. ET | ESPN
    • Game 2: No. 1 Tennessee vs. No. 8 Florida State, 7 p.m. ET | ESPN

Laurens HS

  • Raider Boys Tennis Wrap-Up… Let’s start with a season wrap-up of the Lauren Raider boys’ tennis team… They had a winning record this past season (6-5) and made it to the playoffs for the first time in several years where they defeated Catawba Ridge 5-1 before losing to South Aiken 5-1… Dylan Bank was named to the All-Region Team and Coach Lynne Todd was named the Coach of the year… As for local awards, Ryland Edwards was Rookie of the Year, Westin Coggins won the Raider Spirit Award, Most Improved went to Gibson Partee, Most Competitive went to JP Field, Academic Award to Carson Jenkins, Coach’s Award to Bates Turner and MVP to Dylan Bank… Congratulations to one and all and Coach Todd!

 

  • Raider Football Camp… The Laurens Raider football team and coaches will also be conducting a camp this summer starting on Monday, June 24th and ending on Thursday, Thursday, June 27th… This camp is for youth who will be in grades 2 – 9 this next school year… The camp will be held at KC Hanna Stadium between the hour of 8:00 am and 11:30 am…  The cost is $50 per camper and you can bay for the camp online by clicking here… For a little more information about this camp click here… If you still have questions about the camp email Coach Greg Porter at: gsporter@laurens55.org

    • Baseball College World Series Starts Tomorrow… The 8 teams that will compete for the  DI baseball Championship have been set and the action will start tomorrow (Friday) with 2 games and the other 4 teams will start on Saturday… The teams are divided up into 2 brackets with Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Tennessee making up Bracket 1 while NC State, Kentucky, Florida and Texas A&M make up Bracket 2… Interesting, looks like an ACC or SEC team will win the championship.

  • Super Regional Results… Time does not allow me to run through all the Super Regional results over the weekend… However, you can easily find out the results below… Simply click on the name of the Super Regional you are interested in, and it will open up the schedule and results for that Super Regional.
    • Florida 10 – Clemson 7In spite of what I said above, I will go ahead and mention something I hate to report and that is that the Clemson Tigers fell to the Florida Gators by a score 10-7 in their opening game of the 3-game series on Saturday… The Tigers led 4-2 going into the top of the 5th inning where the wheels came off the bus for the Tigers as the Gators scored 7 runs in the inning to take a 9-4 lead over the Tigers and the Tigers did cut the Gators lead to 9-8 in the 6th inning but could get no closer as the Gators scored another run in the 9th… Click on the score at the beginning for more details on the game… The Tigers were scheduled to play the Gators again yesterday but I can’t report that score to you… Click here to go to the Super Regional schedule to see if they forced a game 3 today… I sure hope they did… Go Tigers!

  • LDHS Cheerleading Car Wash Fund Raiser… This Saturday (June 8th), the Raider cheerleaders will be holding a carwash at Gregory’s Car Wash located at 1220 N. Harper Street… They will be washing vehicles between noon and 2:00 pm… The cost is $20 for cars and $25 for Trucks and SUVs… All proceed go to help funding the Cheerleading Program at LDHS for things like travel expenses, competition entry fees, competitive uniform replacements and other expenses that come up in helping to make the cheerleading program one of the best.

 Justin Bethel Inducted into Big South Hall of Fame… Late last week 2012 PC

 

graduate Justin Bethel made history becoming he first PC player inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame… Bethel’s induction comes on top of other numerous awards he picked up during his time at PC including numerous FCS All-America nods, the 2011 Big South Defensive Player of the Year honor, and a spot on the conference’s 2010-19 All-Decade team… Bethel still holds the Big South record with nine blocked kicks during his time at PC, ranking number one in PC’s Division I history with seven interceptions and 129 interception-return yards…Bethel was taken in the 2012 NFL draft by the Cardinals where he made the Pro Bowl 3 consecutive years as a special teams player… He has also played for the Falcons, the Ravens, the Patriots and is currently under contract with the Miami Dolphins… For much more about his college and pro career, click here to go to the PC website where there is much more on this story and a nice photo slideshow.

  • Oklahoma 8 – Texas 1….   In case you missed it last night, Oklahoma took an 8-3 win over Texas in the first game of the Softball CWS Finals… The Sooners only led 2-1 after 1 inning of play and started to break the game open in the 3rd inning when they put 3 runs on the scoreboard to go up 5-1… They went on to outhit the Longhorns 9-4 and out homered the Longhorns 3-1… The Sooners can claim the championship with another win tonight… To see the interactive bracket for the tournament, click here and it will carry you to the NCAA website where they have the bracket posted

  • New Coaches at Clinton HS… Recently Clinton HS athletic director Louie Alexander announced some changes in coaching position at Clinton HS for next school year.
    • Baseball – Peyton Spangler…  Peyton Spangler a 2015 Clinton HS graduate and current assistant on the baseball team has been named the new head baseball coach… He is a 2019 graduate of Newbery College where he received a BS degree in Physical Education… He has been at Clinton HS since 2019 where he teaches health and PE… As a baseball player ay Clinton he was a North-South All-Star game participant and Laurens County Baseball Player of the Year in 2015… He also has served as a coach in the American Legion baseball program… While an assistant at Clinton HS he has helped guide the Red Devils to 3 region championships (21-23) and the State Championship in 2023… Good Luck to Coach Spangler!
    • Volleyball- Danielle Delio… Danielle Delio will be taking over as the head volleyball coach for the Red Devils next season… She is currently a biology teacher at Clinton HS and has been an assistant on the varsity team and head JV volleyball coach… She has a BS degree in Physical Education from Lander where she helped to found a competitive club volleyball team in 2017… She also has a master’s in Coaching and Athletic Management for Columbia College… She taught PE at Gray Court-Owings where she also served as the school’s athletic director until she received her teaching certification in Biology and came to Clinton HS.
    • JV Volleyball – Brooke O’Shields… Brooke O’Shields has also been named to replace Mrs. Delio as JV volleyball coach and also be an assistant on the varsity volleyball team… She is a 2013 graduate of Clinton HS and has previously taught at Newberry HS before returning home to Clinton HS this past season… Congratulations and good luck to both these ladies as they take over the Red Devil Volleyball teams next season!   Go Big Red!

South Carolina Says Goodbye to Mark Kingston… In case you missed it on the news last night, yesterday just before noon it was announced that Mark Kingston will not be coming back as head baseball coach for the Gamecocks next season… He was hired back in 2018 and his teams had a 217-155 record…  His teams reached a super regional twice and into the NCAA playoffs a total of 4 times… Former Clemson coach Monte Lee has been named the interim head coach as Ray Tanner starts hos search for a new baseball coach… The State Newspaper has a very good story about this with much more information than I have posted here… Click here to go to that story on the State website.

  • 2024 NCAA CWS BracketsThe NCAA Division I Baseball College World Series (CWS) started Friday 5-31 with the 16 different regionals… Four teams from the state of South Carolina were among the field of 64… If you want to see an interactive bracket for the playoffs by regional click here… Catching up with the 4 teams from South Carolina and how they did this past weekend in the regionals:
  • Wofford… The Terroirs were playing in the regional in Chapel Hill where North Carolina was the #1 seed.
    • Friday: LSU 4 – Wofford 3The Terriers lost a heartbreaker Friday to the LSU Tigers as they led 3-1 going into the bottom of the 8th inning where the Tigers scored 2 runs to tie the game and then another run on a solo homer in the 9th inning to take a 4-3 walk-off win.
    • Saturday: Wofford 5 – Long Island 2… The Terriers avoided elimination on Saturday taking a 5-2 win over the Long Island University Sharks which was their first ever win in NCAA playoff win… The Sharks out-hit the Terriers 11-5 in the contest but Wofford proved to have more clutch hits in crunch-time moments.
    • Sunday: LSU 13 – Wofford 6… The win on Saturday allowed the Terriers to take on the LSU Tigers again on Sunday and the Terriers started out like this was going to be their game as they scored 5 runs in the 1st inning… However, LSU came back to take a 13-6 win over Wofford… The Terriers finished the season with a 42-20 record and were the SoCon Champions.
    • By The Way… The winner of the regional is yet to be determined as LSU defeated NC yesterday 8-4 to force a winner take all game tonight at 8:00 pm and it can be seen on ESPN+.

  • South Carolina… The Gamecocks played in the Raleigh Regional where NC State was the #1 seed.

    • Friday: South Carolina 8 – James Maddison 7 (10)… The Gamecocks survived a wild game on Friday taking a walk-off 8-7 win over the James Maddison Dukes… The Gamecocks scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game 7-7 and send it into extra innings… In the 10th inning, a walk and a throwing error by the Dukes put the Gamecocks Kennedy Jones put Jones on third where Will Tippett’s sacrifice fly allowed him to come home with the winning run.
    • Saturday: NC State 6 – Carolina 4… On Saturday the Gamecocks took on the host NC State and fell by a score of 6-4… NC State had 3 homeruns in the gams while the Gamecocks Will Tippett had the only round-tripper for the Gamecocks.
    • Sunday: James Madison 2 – Gamecocks 0…  The Gamecocks saw their season come to an end Sunday as the James Maddison Dukes got a measure of revenge for their loss on Friday to the Gamecocks by taking a 2-0 win over the Gamecocks… A pair of homeruns by the Duke’ Mike Mancini did the Gamecocks in… South Carolina finishes the season with a 37-25 record.
    • By The Way… NC State won the regional taking a 5-3 win over the Dukes on Sunday.

Clemson and Coastal Carolina… The Tigers and the Chanticleers were both playing in the regional hosted by the Tiger up in Clemson over the weekend.

    •  Friday: Coastal 13 – Vanderbilt 3… Friday the Chanticleers started the regional off sinking the Commodores of Vanderbilt by a score of 13-3… They scored 5 runs in the 2nd and 8th inning to go along with 3 in the 4th inning and were never really threatened.
    • Friday: Clemson 4 – High Point… The Clemson Tigers opened their region play taking a 4-3 win over the High Point Panthers… Tristan Bissetta’s single with one out in the ninth inning propelled No. 3 Clemson to a 4-3 walk off victory.
    • Saturday: Clemson 4 – Coastal Carolina 3… On Saturday the Tigers escaped with a 4-3 win over Coastal Carolina… The game went back and forth with the Tigers scoring the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.
    • Sunday: Coastal Carolina 6 – High Point 5… In their first game on Sunday, Chanticleers to a 6-5 win over the High Point Panthers to keep their hopes alive of making it to the CWS… High Point led 5-4 after 7.5 innings but Coastal kept fighting and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning that proved to be the winning runs.
    • Sunday: Clemson 12 – Coastal Carolina 5… The Tigers won their regional Sunday taking a 12-5 win over the Chanticleers… The Tigers scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and pulled away with six runs in the eighth inning.
    • By The Way… The Tigers will be hosting a super regional coming up this weekend hosting either Florida or Oklahoma State depending on who wins a tie-breaking game between the two team teams out in the Stillwater Regional scheduled to be seen on ESPN +.

  • Kiddie Cheer Camp… Once again this summer the Raider cheerleaders and coaches will be having a Kiddie Cheer Camp… The camp is for youth 4-12 and it will be held starting on Monday June 17th and ending on Wednesday, June 19th… The camp will start at 9:00 am on those days and end at noon in the LDHS main gym… The cost is $60 per camper and if a camper has a sibling that wants to attend the cost is only $100 for both campers…  You can register and pay for the camp by clicking here… If you have any questions about this camp, contact Coach Erin Patterson at the following email address: eopatterson@laurens55.org… This camp has always been a camp where the campers have a lot of fun while picking up some valuable pointers about cheering.

 College Baseball

  • 2024 NCAA CWS BracketsThe NCAA Division I Baseball College World Series (CWS) started Friday 5-31 with the 16 different regionals… Four teams from the state of South Carolina were among the field of 64… If you want to see an interactive bracket for the playoffs by regional click here… Catching up with the 4 teams from South Carolina and how they did this past weekend in the regionals:
  • Wofford… The Terroirs were playing in the regional in Chapel Hill where North Carolina was the #1 seed.
    • Friday: LSU 4 – Wofford 3The Terriers lost a heartbreaker Friday to the LSU Tigers as they led 3-1 going into the bottom of the 8th inning where the Tigers scored 2 runs to tie the game and then another run on a solo homer in the 9th inning to take a 4-3 walk-off win.
    • Saturday: Wofford 5 – Long Island 2… The Terriers avoided elimination on Saturday taking a 5-2 win over the Long Island University Sharks which was their first ever win in NCAA playoff win… The Sharks out-hit the Terriers 11-5 in the contest but Wofford proved to have more clutch hits in crunch-time moments.
    • Sunday: LSU 13 – Wofford 6… The win on Saturday allowed the Terriers to take on the LSU Tigers again on Sunday and the Terriers started out like this was going to be their game as they scored 5 runs in the 1st inning… However, LSU came back to take a 13-6 win over Wofford… The Terriers finished the season with a 42-20 record and were the SoCon Champions.
    • By The Way… The winner of the regional is yet to be determined as LSU defeated NC yesterday 8-4 to force a winner take all game tonight at 8:00 pm and it can be seen on ESPN+.

 

  • South Carolina… The Gamecocks played in the Raleigh Regional where NC State was the #1 seed.
    • Friday: South Carolina 8 – James Maddison 7 (10)… The Gamecocks survived a wild game on Friday taking a walk-off 8-7 win over the James Maddison Dukes… The Gamecocks scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game 7-7 and send it into extra innings… In the 10th inning, a walk and a throwing error by the Dukes put the Gamecocks Kennedy Jones put Jones on third where Will Tippett’s sacrifice fly allowed him to come home with the winning run.
    • Saturday: NC State 6 – Carolina 4… On Saturday the Gamecocks took on the host NC State and fell by a score of 6-4… NC State had 3 homeruns in the gams while the Gamecocks Will Tippett had the only round-tripper for the Gamecocks.
    • Sunday: James Madison 2 – Gamecocks 0…  The Gamecocks saw their season come to an end Sunday as the James Maddison Dukes got a measure of revenge for their loss on Friday to the Gamecocks by taking a 2-0 win over the Gamecocks… A pair of homeruns by the Duke’ Mike Mancini did the Gamecocks in… South Carolina finishes the season with a 37-25 record.
    • By The Way… NC State won the regional taking a 5-3 win over the Dukes on Sunday.

 

  • Clemson and Coastal Carolina… The Tigers and the Chanticleers were both playing in the regional hosted by the Tiger up in Clemson over the weekend.
    •  Friday: Coastal 13 – Vanderbilt 3… Friday the Chanticleers started the regional off sinking the Commodores of Vanderbilt by a score of 13-3… They scored 5 runs in the 2nd and 8th inning to go along with 3 in the 4th inning and were never really threatened.
    • Friday: Clemson 4 – High Point… The Clemson Tigers opened their region play taking a 4-3 win over the High Point Panthers… Tristan Bissetta’s single with one out in the ninth inning propelled No. 3 Clemson to a 4-3 walk off victory.
    • Saturday: Clemson 4 – Coastal Carolina 3… On Saturday the Tigers escaped with a 4-3 win over Coastal Carolina… The game went back and forth with the Tigers scoring the winning run in the top of the 9th inning.
    • Sunday: Coastal Carolina 6 – High Point 5… In their first game on Sunday, Chanticleers to a 6-5 win over the High Point Panthers to keep their hopes alive of making it to the CWS… High Point led 5-4 after 7.5 innings but Coastal kept fighting and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning that proved to be the winning runs.
    • Sunday: Clemson 12 – Coastal Carolina 5… The Tigers won their regional Sunday taking a 12-5 win over the Chanticleers… The Tigers scored at least one run in each of the first five innings and pulled away with six runs in the eighth inning.
    • By The Way… The Tigers will be hosting a super regional coming up this weekend hosting either Florida or Oklahoma State depending on who wins a tie-breaking game between the two team teams out in the Stillwater Regional scheduled to be seen on ESPN +.

  • Guzman Signs to Wrestle at PC… Early Wednesday afternoon Red Devil senior wrestler Sandro Guzman signed a letter of intent to continue his education while wrestling at Presbyterian College… He has only wrestled for 2 years and has made so much improvement over those 2 years that he was named the team’s Most Improved Player for this past season for the Red Devils who finished second in the region behind Chester… If you click here, it will take you to a short video interview done with him after the signing where he talks about several things including career goals… Congratulations to Sandro!

  • Spring Football Game Updated… It was brought to my attention that the original video had a sound problem… Hopefully it is now corrected….The Laurens Raiders held their spring game at KC Hanna last Thursday night… It was a spirited workout with a lot of enthusiasm on display… The Raiders will host the Hillcrest Rams August 23 in the opening game of the season… Click here to see a video interview with Coach Porter and some photos.

 Atlanta Braves For more information on the game(s) below, click on the scores.

  • Braves 2 – Nationals 0… After dropping the first game of a 4-game series in Atlanta to the Nationals Monday night 8-4, the Braves rebounded last night taking a 2-0 win… The game was scoreless until the 7th inning where the Braves scored the only 2 runs of the game… Marcell Ozuna (16) had a solo homer in the inning and Braves left fielder Jarred Kelenic hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Matt Olson with the Braves second run… Max Fried (5-2) picked up the win for Atlanta scattering 7 hits while striking out 6 and walking just 1 in 8 innings of work.
  • Braves AA Pitcher Called Up… With the loss of Ronald Acuna Jr and the 6-8 week loss of pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver the Braves are calling up their #3 prospect right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach from Mississippi… For more on him and other Atlanta moves, click here and click here.
  • Braves Lose Acuna for the Season… Before the game yesterday the Braves found out that they had suffered a loss before the game even started… It was announced that Ronald Acuna Jr. will be out the rest of the season as he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Sunday in Pittsburg… For much more on this story click here.

  • Christopher Bell Wins at CharlotteIn what was supposed to be a 400 lap race up at Charlotte last Sunday, Christopher Bell took the win after only 249 laps were completed… Seems that Mother Nature wanted to show off and the cars did not have water-wings our motors suitable for racing in the water so NASCAR called it quits… He was the dominant racer during the race and held off Brad Keselowski at the end… Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.

  • Final 8 Set… The final 8 teams that will compete in the 2024 NCAA Di Women’s College World Series is now set… The 8 teams are: Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Oklahoma State, UCLA, Stanford, Duke and Alabama… The CWS which is held in Oklahoma City starting this Thursday (5-30-14)…. Clinton HS

  • Spring Game Cancelled… The Red Devils were scheduled to hold a Spring Game last Friday night at Wilder Stadium but due to a couple of injuries and a bunch of dinged up players, the decision was made not to play tonight… The Red Devils will now start the summer process of getting ready for the season opener on August 23 when they host former region foe Woodruff at Wilder Stadium.

 College Baseball

  • 16 Regional Sites AnnouncedSunday the NCAA Division I baseball Committee announced the 16 regional sites for the start of this year’s playoffs… Clemson was the 4th site on that list… A total of 5 ACC and 5 SEC teams will be hosting a regional… To see more details on this, click here… The rest of the field of 64 trying to make it to the CWS will be announced today at noon.
  • Conference Tournaments…Most of the D-I conferences that have schools in our area are finished their Conference Tournaments this weekend.
    • Big South… The Big South Tournament is being held up in High Point, NC at Truist Park… For complete information about the tournament click here
      • USC Upstate 9 – PC 8… As you may or may not recall, the Blue Hose baseball team opened play in the Big South Tournament last Thursday with a 5-4 loss to the College of Charleston… On Friday they took on the USC Upstate Spartans in an elimination game and unfortunately fell to the Spartans by a score of 9-8… The game was back and forth the whole 9 innings and the Spartans scored the 2 winning runs in the top of the 9th inning… The Blue Hose finish with a 29-27 record and finished in first place in the Big South regular season.
      • High Point Wins Big South Tournament… The High Point Panthers won its first Big South title in program history by taking a 6-0 win over USC Upstate on Saturday…  For details on this game click here.
    • ACCThe ACC Tournament started May 21st up in Charlotte, NC… For complete information about this tournament including scores as the games finish, click here.
      • Clemson 8 – Louisville 7… After losing to Miami 8-7 on Thursday, the Clemson Tigers rebounded on Friday to take an 8-7 win over the Louisville Cardinals… The Tigers took the walk-off win literally when Clemson’s Jimmy Obertop drew a bases loaded win in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Tigers the win… The Tigers finish the regular season with a 41-14 record and will host a regional (see story above).
      • .Duke Wins ACC Tournament… Sunday the Duke Blue Devils defeated Florida State 9-4 to win the ACC Tournament Championship… For more information on this game click here… Duke gets the automatic bid into the field of 64 but will NOT be hosting a regions;… Florida State will be hosting a regional.
    • SECThe SEC Tournament starts Wednesday out in Hoover, AL… Now for complete information about this Tournament including scores of games completed,  click here
      • Gamecocks Finishes Run in SEC Tournament… As a reminder, the Gamecocks took a 10-5 Wednesday 6-5 and then lost to LSU 11-10 on Thursday to fall into the losers’ bracket of the tournament… On Friday the Gamecocks rebounded to take a 6-5 win over Kentucky to propel them into a semifinal game… They then faced LSU again and again lost to the Tigers by a score of 12-11 in 10 innings… This was a wild game that had a very unusual finish… Click here to read more about it… The Gamecocks finish the season with a 36-23 record and are expected to make the field of 64 announced today.
      • Tennessee Wins SEC TournamentThe Tennessee Volunteers defeated LSU 4-3 to win the SEC Tournament… For more on this game click here… Tennessee will be hosting a regional and LSY is expected to make the fields of 64 announced today.
    • SoCon… The Southern Conference Tournament started Wednesday up at Flour Field in Greenville… For complete information about this tournament click here.
      • Wofford Wins SoCon Tournament…   Another team for our neck of the woods will be in the field of 64 and that is the Wofford Terriers as they won the SoCon Tournament Championship… They worked their way through the winner’s bracket and took on the Samford Bulldogs yesterday only needing to win one game to punch their ticket to a regional… Samford took a 10-9 win in a noon game Sunday but the Terriers came back and sent the Bulldogs back to the pound taking a 15-9 win in the second game… Wofford finishes the regular season with a 41-18 record and will find out today what regional they will be in.

  • Athletic Awards Tonight … The Red Devils will host their 2023-24 athletic awards tonight beginning at 6:00, in the main gym…  All sports will be recognized: Fall, Winter, and Spring… After some awards are handed out in the main gym, there will split out to other areas to hand out awards in the various sports…  There is no cost to attend.  #GO BIG RED

Laurens HS

  • James Island 10 – Raiders 7
    • Last night in front of a very large crowd at Ed Prescott Field, the Raider baseball team saw their season come to an end last night when the James Island Trojans took a 10-7 win coming back late in the game to tie it and then scoring 3 runs in the 8th inning to win it… The Raiders led 7-5 going into the top of the 7th inning and retired the first two Trojan batters in the 7th inning… The Trojans then strung together 4 singles and a double to tie the game… The Raiders then went down in order in the bottom of the inning to send the game into extra innings… The Trojans Stow Rogers lead off for the Trojans in the top of the 8th inning with a solo homer… The next Trojan batter reached base on a walk and the third batter of the inning Taj Marchand homered to make it 10-7 Trojans… When the Raiders came to bat in the bottom of the inning, The Trojan pitcher struck out the first 2 batters and when the third batter grounded out to the third baseman, the celebration was on for James Island…
    • The Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Owen Pridgen homered (6) in the second inning driving in Ben Willis… The Raiders tacked on another run to make it 3-1 in the 3rd when Pridgen singled driving in Coleman Coker… James Island took a 4-2 lead scoring 3 runs in the 4th inning but the Raiders came back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Asher Goss doubled driving in a run… The Raiders scored their last 3 runs to go up 7-4 in the 5th inning when Bennett Edwards doubled driving in 2 runs and Coleman Coker doubled driving in another… The Trojans picked up another run in the 6th inning to make it 7-5 Raiders setting the stage for the dramatic win for Trojans.
    •  Bennett Edwards went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs while Owen Pridgen went 2 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBIs… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored…. Congratulations to the Raiders on a great season!

  • Spring Football Game… The Laurens Raiders have been getting ready for the upcoming season as they have been having spring practice since May 1st under new head coach Greg Porter… Spring practice ends tonight night as the Raiders will have their Spring Game at KC Hanna Stadium starting at 6:00 pm… Come on out and get your first look at next season’s team.
