Local Notes

 Clinton HS

  • Football Has a Bye Week… Just a quick reminder that the varsity football team was off Friday after Union County and Clinton agreed to cancel the game that was postponed by hurricane Helene… The Red Devils will end their regular season this Friday night when they travel to Liberty to take on another set of Red Devils

Laurens HS

  •  Emerald 26 – Laurens 17… The Raider football traveled down to Emerald HS last Friday night to take on the Vikings… The Vikings scored 19 points in the first half before the Raiders finally got on the scoreboard with 24 seconds left in the first half to make it 19-7 Vikings at the half and then went on to a 26-17 win over the Raiders.
    • The Raiders only score in the first half came on 4-yard run by Will Thompson to cap a 48-yard drive in 6 plays and Brock Franklin made the PAT to make it 19-7 going into the locker room at the half.
    • The Raiders received the opening kickoff of the second half and that possession ended with a 50-yard pass from Thompson to Shawn Medlin with 7:29 left in the third quarter… Again Franklin made the PAT so the score stood 19-14 Vikings.
    • The Raiders would get no closer as Emerald responded scoring again to make it 26-14 with the PAT.
    • The Raiders final points were added on the first play of the fourth quarter when a Raider drive stalled, and Brock Franklin kicked a 31-yard field goal to make it 26-17 which would prove to be the final score as the Raiders threatened again but could not convert on a 35-yard field goal attempt later in the fourth quarter.
    • The Vikings had 220 yards rushing to the Raiders 35… Will Thompson had 16 yards rushing and the one TD while Denari Lee Jackson had 14 yards.

Sports Report for Friday, 11-1-2024

Local Notes

 Clinton HS

  • Volleyball: High Point Academy 3 – Clinton 2 … The Red Devil volleyball team started their participation in the Class 2A volleyball playoffs Wednesday at home hosting the Grizzlies of High Point Academy out of Spartanburg… I hate to have to report that the Red Devils lost by a score of 3-2 in a very close match… The Red Devils won the first set by a score of 25-20 but the Grizzlies came back and took the second set by a score of 25-17… The Red Devils dug in and won the third set by a score of 28-26… The Grizzlies fought back and won the fourth set by a score of 25-22… That forced the fifth tie-breaking set where the first one to 15 wins but you have to win by 2 point or more… Neither team wanted to go home early in the playoffs so when the score got to 15 no one had a two-point lead… The Grizzlies wound up winning it by a score of 21-19 ending a great season for the Red Devils… The Red Devils finish the season with an overall record of 16-3 and won the region with a perfect 10-0 record…Afterwards Coach Delio commented “It wasn’t the outcome we hoped for, but I couldn’t be prouder of this group of young ladies and how hard they worked… Playing in 2 scrimmages and 19 games overall including our playoff match and having only 3 total losses, 2 of which being 5 set matches  says a lot about the heart that they played with all season… They have a lot to be proud of.”… I strongly agree with that last statement… Congratulations to the Red Devils and Coach Delio for an outstanding season!

  • Football Has a Bye Week… Just a quick reminder that the varsity football team has tonight off after Union County and Clinton agreed to cancel the game that was postponed by hurricane Helene… The Red Devils will end their regular season next Friday night when they travel to Liberty to take on another set of Red Devils

Laurens HS

  •  JV Football: Emerald 26 – Laurens 13… The Raider JV football team hosted the Emerald Vikings last night led 13-12 at the half but the Vikings came back and scored 14 unanswered points in the second half to take a 26-13 win over the Raisers… How the game went:
    • The Raiders got the ball first and scored on a hook and ladder play with Damajia Crooks carrying it in… The PAT was good so the Raiders led 7-0.
    • The Vikings responded by driving down the field and scoring on a 1 yard run Jamorion Morgan but the PAT was blocked by Ke’Allen Blackwell.
    • The next score came with 1:23 left in the half when the Vikings completed a long pass to make it 12-7 Vikings as the PAT was no good.
    • The Raiders responded immediately as on the third play from scrimmage after the kickoff Crooks again scored on a long run but the PAT was missed to make the score 13-12 Raiders with 11.1 seconds left in the half and that was the score at the half… The Raiders would not score again.
    • Emerald scored on the end of a long, time consuming first possession drive of the second half and again the PAT failed so the score stood 18-13 Vikings
    • The Raiders went 3 and punt on their first possession of the second half.
    • The Vikings then mounted another long, time consuming drive to score with 3:14 left in the game and this time made a 2-point conversion to make the score 26-13 Vikings.
    • Any hope of a comeback by the Raiders was dashed on the first play of the next drive when the Vikings intercepted a Raider pass and then proceeded in running the clock out.

  • Varsity Travels to Emerald Tonight… As a reminder, the 1-7 Raiders are on the road tonight down to Greenwood for a very important region game with the Emerald Vikings who are 4-4 coming into tonight’s game… I can’t overstate the importance of this game because even with only 1 win on the season, the Raiders still have a chance to make playoffs and possibly host a playoff game in 2 week pending the outcome of this game and the one next Friday night at home against the Fountain Inn Fury… I can say that because for class 5A and 4A the SCHSL is using the RPI system found on MaxPreps to determine who makes the playoffs and due to the strength of our opponents this season that helps the Raiders cause if they can win another game or two… If you would like to see the Emerald schedule and scores so far this season, click here… Now I say all that because I hope you will make the short trip to Greenwood to help cheer the Raider on… If you can’t make it, remember we will be broadcasting the game here on Real Radio WLBG and streaming live on the internet at www.wlbg.com starting at 6:20 with the Friday Night Insiders and then going live to Frank Hill Stadium about 6:40 or so… Go Raiders!

  • Fall Ticketing Information and Other Need to Know Venue Information… The Raiders have released information concerning tickets and other rules and regulations you need to know about before you go to any athletic events on campus this fall… This information also includes a parking map… Please check this out to save you some problems before you go… Click here to see that information.

Laurens Academy

  • Crusader on the Road Tonight… A quick reminder that the Crusader will be on the road tonight as they travel to Batesburg to take on the King Academy Knights in a region contest… The Knights are coming into tonight’s contest with a 2-6 record while the Crusaders are 6-3…  The Crusaders defeated them at home back in September at home by a score of 52-36 at home pulling away in the end in a game that was considered a non-region game… The Knights are scoring an average of 20 points per game but giving up 32.6 points per game… When I talked with Coach Doolittle he was quick to point out that they have gotten better as the season went along as the difference in their opponent scoring margin has gone down in the more recent games… If you want to see want to see the Knights schedule this season and the scores of their games, click here… Good Luck to the Crusader tonight!

Thornwell

  • Volleyball: Lewisville 3 – Saints 0… The Saints volleyball team traveled to Lewisville yesterday to take on the Lewisville Lions who came into the match with a 16-2 overall record…I hate to have to report that the Lions ended the Saints season when they took a 3-0 win… Set scores were 25-2, 24-17 and 25-10… The Saints finished the season with a 10-12-1 record and were tied with Green Upstate for 4th in the region and lost the tie-breaker to the Owls to take the #5 seed in the region… Afterwards Thornwell AD Davis Coates commented “Most wins by any team since TCS opened… The young ladies set a new standard and we are all very proud!”… Congratulation to the Saints for making the playoffs and my thanks to Cindy information about the Saints throughout the season!

    • The Panthers answered driving 60 yards in 11 plays and scoring on a 3 yard run by Omar Almanza… Shamere Grant added the 2-point conversion to make it 8-6 Panthers.
    • Not to be outdone, the Tigers scored on their next possession on a 5 yard run by Lang. The 2-point conversion failed so the score stood 12-8 GCO with 3:31 left in the 1st quarter.
    • Neither team scored again in the first half as penalties helped to stop their drives.
    • The Panthers fumbled away the ball on the 4th play of the second half as Wesley Collins recovered for Sanders…A few plays later Collins was intercepted by the Panthers Almanza… The turnover bug in the form of a fumble bit the Panthers 3 plays later and it was recovered by the Tigers at the Panthers 23 yard line and 2 plays later the Tigers Wesley Collins completed a 27 yard pass to Malachi Brown for a TD… Collins added the 2point conversion to make it 20-8 Tigers with 5:19 left in the game.
    • The Panthers responded driving 70 yards and scoring on a 46 yard pass from Sam Parsons to Brent Ludwig to make the score 20-14 as GCO as the 2-point conversion failed with 3:15 left in the game.
    • The Panthers recovered the ensuing onside kick and took over on the Tiger 49 yard line… Two plays later with extreme pressure from 2 Tiger defensive lineman in his face, Parson pass went off the hands of the intended receiver into the hands of the Tigers Mason Lang for a pick-six and Collins added the 2-point conversion to make the final score 28-14 Tigers as the Panthers could not move the ball in the little time reaming in the game.

  • Laurens MS 40 – Sanders 6… In the last game of the day at KC Hanna Stadium the Laurens MS Tigers took a 40-6 win over the Sanders Yellow Jackets to claim the “City Championship”… The Yellow Jackets scored first in the game to make it 6-0 but the Tigers roared back and shut them out the rest of the way to take the win… How it happened:
    • The Yellow Jacket scored the first time they had the ball on a 4 yard run by Travion Robinson but the 2-point conversion failed so they led (for the only time in the game) 6-0with 2:47 left in the first quarter… Little did they know that that would be their only score of the game.
    • The Tigers went right back down the field and scored on a 19 yard run by KB Bryson… Logan Bragg added the 2-point conversion to make it make it 8-6 tigers with just under 40 seconds to play in the first quarter.
    • Sanders turned the ball over on downs on their next possession so the Tigers took over at the Yellow Jacket 47 yard line…Eight plays later Bragg carried it in from the 4 yard line and Shamere Robinson added the 2-point conversion to make it 16-6 LMS.
    • On the first play from scrimmage, the Yellow Jackets had a pass picked off by the Tigers Logan Bragg and returned to the Sanders 19 yard line… Two plays later Bragg carried it in from the 10 yard line and Bryson added the 2point conversion to make it 24-6 with 8.7 seconds left in the half and that was the score at the half.
    • The Yellow Jacket got the ball first to start the 2nd half but could not move the ball and turned it over on downs at their own 45 yard line… The Tigers then scored on a 10 yard run by KB Bryson and the 2-point conversion came on a pass from Logan Bragg to Mason Young to make the score 32-6 with 3:20 left in the 3rd quarter.
    • Again the Yellow Jackets could get no traction against the tough Tiger defense and turned the ball over on downs at their own 46 yard line… The Tigers then went on down the field and scored on a 6 yard pass from Bragg to Miles Crow and added the 2-point conversion on a pass from Bragg to Aadyn Jenkins to make the score 40-6 which would be the final.

  • JV Football: Wren 23 – Laurens 21… The Raider JV football team hosted the Wren Golden Hurricanes last night at KC Hanna Stadium and the Raiders took an early 7-3 lead but could not hold it as Wren came back to take a 23-21 win over the Raiders… It was a game that saw both team have troubles with penalties and turnovers…  How it happened:
    • Wren took the opening kickoff and drove down to the Raider 8 yard line but could get no closer and had to settle for a 15 yd. field goal with 8:11 left on the clock in the first quarter.
    • The Raiders BJ Hill returned the ensuing kickoff 42 yards to the Wren 36 yard line and 8 plays later Isai Fernandez carried in in from the 2 yard line and with Kevy Velasco’s extra point the Raiders led 7-3 with 4:10 left on the clock in the first quarter.
    • Wren answered scoring on a long pass play with 2:04 left on the clock in the first quarter to make it 9-7 Wren.
    • Both teams had troubles with turnovers as the Raiders fumbled twice before halftime and the Raiders AJ Mumford intercepted a pass on a fake punt by Wren .
    • Wren scored again with 18.1 seconds left in the half on a short run that was set up by a Raider fumble… The score was 16-6 Wren at the half.
    • The Raiders took the opening kickoff of the second half and went 51 yards scoring on a 46 yard pass from Buddy Cheeks to Caleb Gilchrist and with Velasco’s extra point the score was 16-14 Wren.
    • The Raiders Jamorion Rice then recovered a Wren fumble only to have the Raider offense fumble the ball back to Wren 2 plays later… Again the Hurricanes fumbled the ball back to the Raiders 2 plays later but the Raiders could not cash in on that opportunity.
    • The next score was a Wren TD with 1:49 left in the game and the PAT was good so Wren led 23-14 with 1:49 left in the game.
    • The Raiders then used a trick play to score as Buddy Cheeks completed a pass to Kaleb Gilchrest who lateraled to Demajia Crooks who scored to make it 23-21 Wren with Velesco’s extra point being good.
    • The Raiders then blocked a Wren punt to give then the ball at the Wren 20 yard line with 26.5 seconds left in the game but the Raiders just could not cover the distance in the time remaining so the final was 23-21 Wren I  one whale of a game.
