Coaching News…. Catching up on some area coaching news:

• Laurens HS
  • Travis Langford Selected for SCBCA Hall of Fame… Former Laurens Raider as well as Ware Shoals and Hickory Tavern basketball Travis Langford was one of 4 basketball coaches to be selected by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association to be inducted into their Hall of Fame this year… Coach Langford coached at Ware shoals in the early 80’s where he was assistant on the boys’ team and later head coach of the girls…. He is mostly remembered for his tenure at Laurens High School… Starting in 1997 his Lady Raider made it to the Upper State Finals 5 consecutive years and again in 2001… His teams also won 5 region titles in 1984, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2008… The State Championship was also captured by the Raiders in 1998, 1999 and 2001… He was voted the Region Coach of the Year on multiple occasions and won other state-wide awards… He has even came out of retirement a few years ago to help coach basketball at Hickory Tavern for a short period of time… He will be honored by the association on July 23 at their banquet in Greenville… For more information on him and the others who will be inducted that night click here… Congratulations to Coach Langford!
  • Daryl Smith Lands in Saluda… As you may or may not recall, former Laurens HS football coach Daryl Smith was named as the head football coach at Thornwell Charter Schools… Also as you may recall, since then Thornwell has decided not to field a varsity football team this upcoming season due to lack of interest… That fact caused Coach Smith to step down as the coach of the Saints… Caught up with him recently and I am glad to report that he is now the defensive coordinator for the Saluda Tigers… That title is one that he held prior to coming to Laurens and when he first came to Laurens… Good Luck to him and the Tigers!

• Thornwell Charter… The Thornwell Saints also made a couple of hires just before the end of the school year so let’s remind you of those.
  • Justin Dawkins… Coach Justin Dawkins will be guiding the Saints Boys basketball program this season as he takes over coaching the varsity boys… Dawkins is leaving School District 55 where he has been coaching various levels of basketball where most recently he was the varsity boys’ assistant coach… He also has AAU coaching experience… He has also done well in the classroom as a teacher where he won a Golden Apple Award and the National Citizenship Education Teacher Award in 2023… He will be teaching math and science to grades 4 and 5 at Thornwell… Click here to see the Thornwell announcement.
  • Michael Hogan… The Saints will also have a new girls’ basketball coach this season… Coach Hogan has years of experience mostly in the lower part of the state and some of that was in sports other than basketball… He most recently coached basketball at Fox Creek… He actually began teaching social studies back in February at Thornwell… Good Luck to Coach Hogan and Coach Dawkins!

  • Christopher Dodson Hired as AD (Again)… Also recently Christopher Dodson was named the Athletic Director at Ware Sholas HS… As you may or may not recall, Dodson was named as the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Ware Sholas over a year ago but had the AD title removed in May of 2023 because of self-reported violation of SCHSL rules which caused the Hornet football team to suffer sanctions last year… At that time he lost the AD title but continued on as football coach… Chad Roper was hired as the AD and baseball coach… Recently Roper resigned to return to BHP… Because of his work and dedication to the Hornet athletic program over the past year, Coach Dodson had the AD title added back to his job description… Click here for more information about this… Good Luck to him and the Hornets!

Laurens Academy

• Football Schedule… Recently the varsity football schedule for the Laurens Academy Crusaders was released… The Crusaders will again be under the direction of Coach Jolly Doolittle… They will have 5 home games and 6 road games… They will open on the road at Cambridge Academy on August 16^th and host their first game on August 30^th when the Wardlaw Patriots visit Todd Kirk Field…. Their schedule is as follows and games with an asterisk (*) are region games:

College Football

•  ACC College Football Kickoff… Last week the SEC had their SEC Football Media Days out in Dallas… This week it is the ACC’s turn to take center stage as they start their ACC Kickoff event up in Charlotte, NC… The event will start at 1:00 pm with Commissioner Jim Phillips speaking… After that Georgia Tech, Florida State and SMU will be featured… For you Clemson fans I’ll mention that Dabo Swinney and the Tigers do not get their chance until the last day which is Thursday at noon… To see the entire schedule click here… The entire event can be seen on the ACC Network and if you do not have access to the ACC Network you can also watch it on the above mentioned link.

• SEC Preseason Media Polls Released… The SEC released its Preseason Media Polls and All-SEC Team Preseason List last Friday… Georgia was selected by the media to win the SEC Championship with Texas finishing second and Alabama third… South Carolina was predicted to finish ahead of only Arkansas, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt… Click here to go to the SEC website where there is a posting about this and also the list of plyers who made the All-SEC Teams as predicted by the media.  …

Swinney Explain Not Moving South Carolina Game to Friday… As you may recall a few days ago I mentioned that ESPN and the ACC asked Clemson to move the South Carolina game this year from Saturday to Black Friday (Nov. 29) and Clemson turned down that request much to the consternation of ESPN and the ACC…  In a news conference this past Tuesday Dabo Sweeny explained why that decision was made and to me it made sense… Basically he said that Saturday games in the Valley were special and a huge recruiting tool and that is something he did not want to miss out on plus it would be a hassle for recruits and their families…. Also he mentioned that to ask students to come back to campus the day after Thanksgiving was asking a lot as they would miss time with family and friends… He also was thinking of the Clemson businesses which really count on the revenue from a full day of football related sales… That might not be the case on Friday as some folks might be off on the Black Friday Shopping Tradition… All makes sense to me… Click here to go to an article in the Greenville News and what he actually said.

• Catching Up with Clinton HS Sports Awards… Ove the next several days I will be attempting to bring to you the names of student-athletes who won various awards at the Clinton HS Sports Awards Ceremony held just before school let out this year.

SEC Football Media Days… Starting today and going through Thursday, in Dallas Texas at Omni Hotel, the SEC will be holding its annual Football Media Days where the commissioner and all the football coaches will talk about the upcoming football season where the SEC welcomes Texas and Oklahoma to the conference… The activities will start at 10 am ET and it can be seen on the SEC Network… Today after commissioner Greg Sankey speaks, LSU, South Carolina (12:35) will take to the podium followed by a lunch break… Afterwards Ole Miss and Vanderbilt will take center stage… To see not only the schedule for today but also the days to come and the players the coaches are expected to bring, click here.

• South Carolina Baseball Team Adds and Loses Through Transfer Portal… Since Pail Mainieri took over the Gamecock baseball program a few weeks ago there has been a lot of movement into and out of the Gamecock baseball team through the transferee portal… The most recent count show 11 additions and 8 leaving… Most notably two Clemson baseball players have announced their intents to “change sides” in the rivalry… Nathan Hall and Nolan Nawrocki are the Tigers headed to South Carolina… I strongly suspect that Monty Lee’s staying at South Carolina as associate head coach has something to do with that…. Some of you may have missed the story about Clemson refusing to move the South Carolina game from Saturday, Nov. 30 to Friday, Nov. 29 in prime time… The ACC and ESPN requested that the Tigers do that and Clemson refused… The ACC and ESPN offered the Tigers several incentives to do that but they said no… Their refusal more than likely has something to do with the lawsuit filed by Clemson against the ACC over exclusive media rights that the ACC has over the Tigers (and all other ACC schools) athletics… Personally, I think that Dabo’s wife and the other coaches wives told them they better not do that and mess up their Black Friday shopping day…LOL… For more information on why Clemson (and Florida State) are suing the ACC, click here.

 Atlanta Braves… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the scores.

• Braves 5 – D-backs 4 (11)… The Atlanta Braves started a 4-game series with the D-backs out in Arizona last night taking a come-from behind 5-4 win in 11 innings… The Braves took the early lead scoring a single run on a solo homer by Austin Riley (12) in the first inning… The D-backs took the lead scoring 3 runs in the 6^th inning to go up 3-1 and the score stayed that way until the ninth inning… In the ninth, Eddie Rosario who just rejoined the Braves had a 2-out single to set the stage for Sean Murphy to tie the game with his fifth homer of the season… After holding the D-backs in the bottom of the inning, Ozzie Albies drove in Zack Short in the top of the tenth inning to take a 4-3 lead only to have the D-backs score a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game… In the eleventh inning, Marcell Ozuna had a sacrifice fly to drive in Austin Riley with what would prove to be the winning run as the Braves held the D-backs scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

• Up Next… The Greenville Drive were off last night and will travel to Rome, GA to start a 6-game series with the Emperors tonight… The Drive are 8-7 in the South Atlantic League Southern Division in the second half (34-47 on the entire season) 2.5 games behind division leading Bowling Green in the second half.

NASCAR

• Alex Bowman Wins Rain Shortened Chicago Race… For some strange reason NASCAR seems to think they can set up a street race in Chicago and not have problems… For the second year the weather played havoc with the Cup Series Race as it rained more than it did not… The race Sunday was scheduled for 75 laps but was cut to 58 laps to get the race done by 8:20 pm CDT… I guess they needed that much time to get the streets ready for Monday work traffic… In the end, Alex Bowman held off Tyler Redick by 2.863 seconds… Hus last win was 80 races ago and this win puts him in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs…  Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.

 Summer Camps at Clinton YMCA… All of the summer sports camps through the Clinton YMCA have now concluded.

 

Basketball Camp…. The LDHS varsity basketball staff and players in association with the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting a basketball for youth age 9 through 8^th grade July 22-25… The camp hours will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm each day… This will be an excellent opportunity for the young player to improve their skills and basketball knowledge form experienced coaches… The first 3 days (Monday-Wednesday) the camp will take place at The Ridge and the last day (Thursday) the action will move to LDHS… You may register for the camp at The Ridge and if you have any questions contact them at 681-7275.

• South Carolina Baseball Team Adds and Loses Through Transfer Portal… Since Pail Mainieri took over the Gamecock baseball program a few weeks ago there has been a lot of movement into and out of the Gamecock baseball team through the transferee portal… The most recent count show 11 additions and 8 leaving… Most notably two Clemson baseball players have announced their intents to “change sides” in the rivalry… Nathan Hall and Nolan Nawrocki are the Tigers headed to South Carolina… I strongly suspect that Monty Lee’s staying at South Carolina as associate head coach has something to do with that…. • Clemson Refuses to Move Date of South Carolina Game…. Some of you may have missed the story about Clemson refusing to move the South Carolina game from Saturday, Nov. 30 to Friday, Nov. 29 in prime time… The ACC and ESPN requested that the Tigers do that and Clemson refused… The ACC and ESPM offered the Tigers several incentives to do that but they said no… Their refusal more than likely has something to do with the lawsuit filed by Clemson against the ACC over exclusive media rights that the ACC has over the Tigers (and all other ACC schools) athletics… Personally, I think that Dabo’s wife and the other coaches’ wives told them they better not do that and mess up their Black Friday shopping day…LOL… For more information on why Clemson (and Florida State) are suing the ACC, click here.

• Catching Up With Clinton HS Sports Awards… Ove the next several days I will be attempting to bring to you the names of student-athletes who won various awards at the Clinton HS Sports Awards Ceremony held just before school let out this year.
  • Girls Tennis…  As a reminder the girls’ tennis team finished the season with a 13-2 record and went 6-0 in region play to win the Region Championship… The fell to BHP 6-0 in the third round of the playoffs.
    • All-Region Players: Chandler Dailey, Libby Dailey, Kimora Wesley and Carley MacMillan
    • Region IV Payer of the Year: Chandler Dailey
    • Region IV Coach of the Year: Clovis Simmons.
    • NOTE: Both Chandler and Libby Dailey qualified for the SCHSL Girls Singles Tennis Tournament and both won at least 2 matches in that tournament.

• Final Baseball Coaches Poll… Now that the college baseball season is over the final USA Today Coaches Poll has been released… As you might expect Tennessee checks in at #1 and Texas A&M #2… The other 6 teams that made it to Omaha to participate in the Baseball College World Series filled out the next 6 spots in order are Kentucky, Florida State, North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, and NC State coming in at #8… The Clemson Tigers (44-16) finished the best they could not making it to Omaha at #9… Other area teams finishing in the top 25 included Georgia at #10 and East Carolina at #16… To see the entire poll click here.

  • Monday: Tennessee 6 – Texas A&M 5… Monday night out in Omaha he Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 6-5 to win the College Baseball World Series… This was the first ever national title in the program’s history… The Volunteers led 6-1 after 7 innings of play and to their credit the Aggies did not give up as they scored 2 runs in the 8^th inning and 2 in the 9^th to make the final 6-5… Both teams had 13hits and one of the big differences in the game is that the Volunteers had 2 homers in the game and the Aggies had none… Tennessee finishes with a 60-13 record and becomes the first SEC to win the SEC regular season title, SEC Tournament title and the MCWS in the same season… In addition to clicking on the score at the start of this section, you can also click here to go to the Tennessee website and their take on the game.

• Baseball College World Series
• Saturday: Texas A&M 9 – Tennessee 5…The Championship Series of the College Baseball World Series started Saturday night out in Omaha with the Texas A&M Aggies takin a 9-5… The Aggies scored 2 runs in the top of the 1^st inning and then broke the game open in the 3^rd inning where they put 5 runs on the scoreboard to make the score 7-1 and went on to the 9-5 win by outhitting the Volunteers 13-12… A&M also out-homered the Volunteers 2-1 and Tennessee also had 3 errors in the game which aided the A&M scoring in that only 7 of the runs scored by the Aggies was earned.
• Sunday: Tennessee 4 –Texas A&M 1… Sunday the Tennessee Volunteers showed they were still a force to be reckoned with as they took a 4-1 over the Aggies of Texas A&M to force a deciding game 3 in the College world Series… The Aggies used a solo homer in the 1^st inning to take a 1-0 led and the game stayed 1-0 until the top of the 7^th inning when the Volunteers scored 2 runs on a 2-run homer and then added 2 more runs in the 8^th inning on another 2-run homer and then kept the Aggies off the scoreboard the rest of the way taking the 4-1 win… The Tennessee win forces a game-3 in the best of 3 series tonight at 7:00 pm EDT with the winner taking home the BIG trophy.
