Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Tennis Team Takes Two From Union…  The Red Devil tennis team has been busy the last couple of days… On Wednesday they traveled to Union County to take on the Yellow Jackets and defeated them 5-1… Then yesterday they hosted the Yellow Jackets and defeated them 6-0… Both days Nathan Meade, Edwin Orr, Matthew King, Jacob King and Malakye Brewer all took wins in singes action… Wednesday the #2 doubles team of Brady Mason and Ethan Wargo lost to their opponents but rebounded yesterday to take a win… For more information on Wednesday’s match click here and for more information on yesterday’s match click here… The Red Devils are now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in region play and will travel to Emerald today for a 5:00 pm match with the Vikings.
  • JV Baseball: Clinton 16 – Chester 0… I also need to do some catching up with the Red Devil JV baseball team… On Wednesday they hosted the Chester Cyclones and turned the Cyclones into a light breeze as they defeated them 16-0 in 3 innings… Simply put, the Red Devils outhit them 10-1 and 4 Cyclone errors, 6 walks, at least 4 wild pitches and a hit batter or two all worked in favor of the Red Devils as all but 3 of the Red Devil runs were unearned… Avery Barnes went 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles and drove in a run for the Red Devils… Angel Vargas also went 2 for 2 with a double and Clayton Kyko also went 2 for 2 driving in 2 runs… Talon Campbell was credited with the win pitching 2 innings of no hit ball while striking out 5 and walking just 1… Vargas pitched the last inning striking out 2 and walking 1 as well as giving up the Cyclones lone hit…  Click here to see the box score of the game…. Laurens HS

  • JV Baseball… Yesterday the Laurens Raider JV baseball team hosted the Riverside Warriors in a doubleheader of 5 inning games… Good news for Raider fans as the team won both games against the Warriors.
    • Game 1: Laurens 11 – Riverside 1… The Raider wasted little time in taking control of this game as they scored 7 runs in the 1st inning and 4 in the 3rd and held the Warriors to a single run in the 5th as they took an 11-1 win… The Raiders outhit the Warriors 7-2 and both teams had some errors but Riversides errors were more costly to them… Ke’Allen Blackwell was the only Raider with more than 1 hit as he went 2 for 2 (both singles) driving in a run… Tristen Buzbee had 1 hit that was a triple driving in a run… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored.
    • Game 2: Laurens 9 – Riverside 2… Game 2 was a little closer as the Raiders took a 9-2 win… Riverside scored their runs in the 1st inning but the Raiders responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning and added 4 more in the second as they cruised to the win… In this game the Raiders outhit the Warriors 9-3 with both Preston Dixon and Samuel Adams leading the offense going 2 for 3 and driving in 3 runs each… One of Adams hits was a triple… Noah Hughes picked up the complete game win giving up the 2 earned runs on 3 hit while striking out 3 and walking 1… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored… The team is now 12-6 on the season.
  • Boys Tennis: Riverside 6 – Laurens 0… Back on Tuesday the Raider boys’ tennis team hosted the Riverside Warrior… All I know about that match is that Riverside took a 6-0 win.

  • Cheerleading Tryouts… Cheerleading tryouts will be held at LDHS starting Monday, May 6th and running through Thursday, May 9th in the Main Gym at LDDHS… There is a lot of information you need to know be coming out on those dates including information about needing a current physical form… For much more information about this, click here

  • D-1 Rankings… The latest college baseball rankings according to D1BASEBALL.COM TOP 25 came out 4-7-24… The top 5 are (previous spot in parenthesis): Arkansas (1), Clemson (2), Texas A&M (3), Tennessee (4) and Oregon State (5)… Coastal Carolina remains at # 20 and South Carolina dropped out of the top 25… If you wish to see the entire top 25 according to the poll click here.

The MastersI have to admit I am not a big fan of golf but the one tournament I pay attention to is The Masters… Not only is some great gold played there but it is done on one of the most beautiful courses on the tour…  The Masters starts Thursday, 4-11 and if you click here it will carry you to the masters’ website where almost anything you want to know about this iconic tournament can be found… Schedules, tee times, weather alerts and leader board are just a few of the thing you can find there… If you want to go directly to the leader board click here… Enjoy!


Atlanta Braves

  • Mets 16 – Braves 4… The Braves lost the final game of a 4-game series with the Mets yesterday in Atlanta by a score of 16-4… The Mets simply outhit the Braves 16-10… Five of their hits were for extra bases including 2 homers… The Braves only had 2 extra base hits and none were homers… The Braves start a 3 game series in Miami tonight with the Marlins.

Greenville Drive

  • Drive 8 – Hot Rods 7 (9)… The Greenville Drive broke a 4-game losing streak last night ay Flour Field as they took an 8-7 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods in 9 innings… Both teams had 12 hits and Caden Rose had 2 hits one of which was in the 9th inning that drove in the winning run to give the Drive the walk-off win… The Drive play 3 more games this weekend to finish the current series with Bowling Green.

  • William Byron Wins for Third Time this SeasonWilliam Byron became the first 3-time winner on the Cup Series this season as he took the win at Martinsville Sunday… His Rick Hendricks Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliot finished second and third respectively… Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.

Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame… Recently the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame announced the five members of its fifth class which will be inducted on Thur., April 25th at Laurens County Museum on courthouse square at 6:30 pm… The five new members are Robert Wilder, Anthony Downs, Charles Peterson, Walter Todd and Jean Hammond Whitfield… Now to read more about each of the inductees and to learn how they were chosen click here… You will also find out who the members of the first four classes were as well as general information about the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame… Tickets are now on sale for $30 and include a catered meal… To purchase your ticket, click hereNo tickets will be sold at the door.
