The Raiders finished second among the Class AAAA teams present to region foe Westside… Coach Erin Patterson said she was pleased with the Raiders first performance of the season especially since she has 5 middle schoolers on the team and several others who are new to competitive cheer on the team… If you click here, you will see a video of the 21/2 minute routine the Raiders performed a couple of photos after that… The Raiders are scheduled to participate in another event this Saturday where they are scheduled to take “center stage” at about 10:45 am… Go up and support the team if you get a chance

Sports Report for Friday, 10-11-2024

Sorry for the delay in posting this but it was because of a computer problem.

Clinton HS

  • Up Next in Football…  The Red Devils get back on the field tonight at Wilder Stadium hosting the Chesnee Eagles in the first region game for both teams… The Red Devils are 3-2 and the Eagles are 2-3… A common opponent for both teams this season is Woodruff… The Eagles lost to the Wolverines 45-28 about a month ago while the Red Devils lost to the Wolverines in a close one 40-36 in the first game of the season…. Chesnee is averaging 25.8 points per game while the Red Devils average 31 points per game… The Eagles are giving up an average of 32.6 point per game while the Red Devils are giving up and average of 25.2 points per game… To see the Chesnee schedule and scores click here… Go Big Red!
  • Homecoming… Homecoming has now been set for Oct. 25th when the Red Devils host the Blacksburg Wildcats… More details will be released later.

Laurens HS

  • Up Next in Football…   The Raiders will be hosting the Southside Tigers tonight in their first region game and it will also be Homecoming… As with the other area team, this will be the first region game of the season for both teams and both teams are 0-5 so unless something very unforeseen happens, one of the two teams will pick up its first win… Southside is averaging 18.5 per game while giving up 34.8… Raiders have had trouble on offense averaging just 6.2 points per game while the defense has been helping them hang in there only allowing 31 points per game with most of that in second half of each game…To see the Southside schedule and results click here… By the way it is also Homecoming.

  • Raider Cheer Classic 2024… The Raider completive cheer team finally got to start its season last night as they hosted the Raider Cheer Classic 2024… By the way, this was the first time the Raiders had ever hosted a completive cheer event… The number of teams that were able to compete was reduced at the last minute as the Greenville County School District imposed a 6:00 pm curfew on all athletic events and practices yesterday…. Laurens Academy

  • Up Next in Football… The Crusader’s will travel to Oakbrook Prep for a region game tonight at 7:30 pm… As you may recall, the Crusaders are 4-2 on the season while the Knights are 0-5… Earlier in the season the Crusaders took a 40-20 win over the Knights at Todd Kirk Field… Coach Doolittle says that any team that is trying to get its first win is dangerous and the Crusaders cannot take them lightly…. The Knights average 22.4 points per game while giving up 44 while the Crusaders average 38 points per game and give up an average of 31.5… To see the Oakbrook schedule and scores click here…. Go Crusaders!
  • Crusaders Host Region Tournament… Both the middle school and varsity volleyball teams will be in action tomorrow as the Crusaders host the region tournament … The middle school team will start their participation at 10:00am and if (when) they win they will play again about noon…The varsity team is supposed to take to the court tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 and if (when) they win they will play again about 4#0 pm… Good Luck both teams

Thornwell

  • Volleyball: Abbeville 3 – Saints 0… last night the Thornwell Saints volleyball teams hosted the Abbeville Panthers in region action… I hate to have to report that the Saints were unable to “ring the bell” as in varsity action the Panthers took a 3-0 win… As a rule the Saints hung in there in the early portion of each set only to have the Panthers pull away in the end… Set scores were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-22… The middle school teams also played and Abbeville took a 2-0 win in that match… Set scores were 25-19 and 25-8… The Saints still have a shot at making the playoffs… Go Big Dogs!

Sports Report for Friday, 10-4-2024

Local Notes

South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Director Ask for Season ChangeThursday another  voice was added to the chorus to voices wanting the SCHSL to make a decision on extending the fall season a week or two for all sports not just football… Former Myrtle Beach and Westside head football coach Scott Earley who is the Executive Director of the South Carolina Athletics Coaches Association sent a letter to Jerome Singleton the Commissioner of the SCHSL to do just that… His letter makes compelling case to do just that… If you would like to tread more about this and see the letter, click here to go to a posting on WYFF.com about this.

Some High School Coaches Hoping for Extension of Season… Some high school coaches around the state are hoping that the SCHSL will consider extending the season a week or two to help make up already postponed game caused by Hurricane Helene and other that might have to be postponed this week due to conditions that still exist after the hurricane… This would not be unprecedented as just such a thing happened back in 2015… There is a nice article about this in the State Newspaper that includes comments from Jerome Singleton Commissioner of the SCHSL and others… To read that article click here…. I have ever since 2015 advocated a remedy for this problem that so far no coach I have mentioned it to have disliked… If you are curious about my proposal, click here… I would be curious on your thoughts about it.

Sports Report for Monday, 9-30-2024

Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Union Football Game Cancelled… The Red Devils really wanted to host the Union County Yellow Jackets last Friday night for homecoming but it just was not to be… Impassable roads or dangerous roads plus a lack of electricity caused the game to be cancelled and there are no plans to make it up… The notice I received did not say anything about Homecoming… If it is rescheduled I will pass that information on to you.
  • Up Next in Football… As the football schedule now stands and if damage from Helene allows, the Red Devils are scheduled to open up their region schedule on the road at Liberty HS this Friday taking on another set of Red Devils at 7:30 pm.

  • Crusaders Postpone Game with WW King… Last Thursday afternoon the Crusaders decided to postpone their game with the King Academy Knights until October 18th when the Crusaders had a bye week built into their schedule… It’s my understanding that SCISA had a bye week built into everyone’s schedule for situations like this… Not a bad idea… Homecoming was scheduled Friday night and though I have not been told so official, I do believe it will be rescheduled for October 18th also as the Crusaders are on the road for the next two weeks.

Sports Report for Friday, 9-27-2024

Local Notes

Clinton HS

  • Red Devils Host Union County… Last night about 8:30 pm I reached out to conform that the Red Devils are still planning on hosting the Union County Yellow Jackets tonight at 7:30 and received a reply from Coach Fountain that the game was still on… He promised me that if that changed they would let me know… If that should happen I will get that information out as a news story on our website, through X (formerly Twitter) and also announced over the air… By the way Homecoming is also scheduled for tonight.
  • Union Stats… The Yellow Jackets come into the game tonight with a 1-4 record and their only win so far this season has been against Blacksburg a couple of week ago where they took a close 30-27 victory… They are averaging 15.2 points per game while giving up 44.6 points per game… The 3-2 Red Devils are averaging 31 points per game while giving up 25.2… If you would like to see the Union County schedule and results click here Once you get to the posting on MaxPreps be sure to click on game preview for more comparison between the two teams.
  • Interview with Coach Fountain…Earlier this week I called and talked with Coach Fountain about the game with Daniel and the game with Union County tonight like I would if we had our Friday Night Insiders program before a Raider football broadcast… If you would like to hear that recording, click here.
  • JV Football: Clinton 32 – Union 8… The Red Devil JV football team traveled over to Union County HS Wednesday and came home with a 32-8 win over the Yellow Jackets… At this time that I have no other details on the game but if Coach Glenn send me some I will be sure to pass them on to you.

Laurens HS

  • Lexington 29 – Laurens 0… The Raiders were at home Wednesday night taking on the Lexington Wildcats in their last non-region game of the session… Lexington won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game, but the Raiders surprised everyone as they recovered an onside kick to start the game… After that, very few things went the Raiders way.
    • The Raiders had trouble moving the ball as the Lexington defensive line won the battle at the line of scrimmage more often than not… The Raiders were forced to try a field goal at the end of that first possession but missed it.

Laurens Academy

  • Crusaders Postpone Game with WW King… Yesterday afternoon the Crusaders decided to postpone their game with the King Academy Knights until October 18th when the Crusaders had a bye week built into their schedule… It’s my understanding that SCISA had a bye week built into everyone’s schedule for situations like this… Not a bad idea… Homecoming was scheduled for tonight and though I have not been told so official, I do believe it will be rescheduled for that date also as the Crusaders are on the road for the next two weeks.

Local Notes

 Clinton HS

  • Daniel 37 – Clinton 12… The # 2 ranked team in Class AA traveled to the #2 ranked team in Class AAAA and the Class AAA team prevailed as Clinton fell to the Daniel Lions 37-12… The Red Devils hung in there in the first half as the Lions only led 14-6 at the half and the score could have been 14-10 at the half but for a missed extra point and missed 30 yard field goal… The second half so Daniel come out and put 23 unanswered points on the scoreboard before Clinton was able to get a TD just before the final horn sounded… In the third quarter the Red Devils quarterback Tushawan Richardson was injured and had to leave the game with Jayden Glenn finishing the game at quarterback… The Red Devils fought to the end but just could not get the “big play” when needed.

  • JV Football: Daniel 14 – Clinton 6… Last Thursday the Red Devil JV football team hoisted the Daniel Lions at Wilder Stadium and something happened that has not happened in about 4 years, they lost as Daniel took a 14-6 win breaking the Red Devils long winning streak… Daniel scored in the first and second quarters and the Red Devils had their lone TD scored by Angel Vargas in the second quarter…Coach Glenn commented afterwards “Our team played extremely hard all four quarters and we came up short on some missed opportunities. The effort given was great. Our kids shouldn’t have anything to hold their heads down about. We had one player suffer a significant injury and will pray for him and his recovery.  We will improve on our mistakes and prepare for Union next week.” That game will be at Union at 6:00 pm and it will be played at the stadium on their campus not the one on the bypass where the varsity normally plays.

Laurens Academy

  • Crusaders 52 – WW King 36… The Crusader football team hosted the Knights of WW King last Friday night at Todd Kirk Field and the Crusaders took a 52-36 win after being ahead 30-16 at the half but King tied it 30-30 in the third quarter…. How it happened:
    • The Crusaders got the ball first after a short almost onside kick off (all the kickoffs for both teams were that way) at their own 48 yd. line and scored 3 plays later when Caleb Hardy ran 45 yds. for the TD… Garrett Murphy made the 2-point conversion so the Crusaders led 8-0 with 10:37 left in the first quarter.
    • The Knight got the ball on the 50 yd. line after the kickoff and scored 6 plays later on a 29 yd. run by Joseph Moore from 29 yards out… Kevin Crapps then completed the 3 yd. pass for the 2-point conversion to tie the game 8-8.
    • The Crusaders wasted little time getting the lead back as Garett Murphy broke loose on the first play from scrimmage and weaved his way to a 51 yd. TD run… By the way he added the 2-point conversion to make it 16-8 Crusaders with 7:23 left in the second quarter.
    • The Crusaders then held the Knight to 3 and punt and took over on their own 14 yd. line… A penalty on the Knights moved it to the 29 and 2 plays later Murphy again scored this time carrying the ball 69 yds… Caleb Hardy then connected with Anthony Candelas for the 2-point conversion to make the score 24-8 with 3:47 left in the half.
    • The Knights did not go quietly into the good night as on the first play from scrimmage they had a 50 yd. TD run and converted the 2-point attempt to make it 24-16 with 3:22 left in the half.
    • Neither team could punch the ball in on their next possession and when the Knight punted, Garrison Vaughn blocked the punt to give the Crusaders the ball at the Knight 13… A penalty set the Crusaders back 10 yards but they did score on a 2 yd. run by Murphy but the conversion failed to make it 30-16 which was the score at the half as neither team scored again in the first half.
    • The Knight got the ball first in the second half and drove down and scored on an 8 yd. run by Casen Buzhardt but the 2-point conversion failed so the score stood 30-22 Crusaders.
    • The Knights recovered the onside kick and took over at the Crusader 48 yd. line… The Crusaders made them earn every yard in the drive but 10 play later they did score on a 13 yd. pass play and added the 2-[point conversion to tie the score 30-30 with 2:30 left in the third quarter.
    • The Crusaders put their heads down and went back to work and scored at the end of a 56 yd. drive in 8 plays as Murphy again carried it home this time from 2 yds. out… Oh by the way, he once again added the 2-point conversion to make it 28-30 with 10:18 left in the game.
    • After again holding the Knights to 3 and a punt, the Crusaders went 66 yds. and scored on the 4th play from scrimmage when Caleb Hardy turned a shuttle pass form Ethan Collins into a 47 yd. scamper… If I told you the 2-point conversion was good and asks you to guess who scored it and you said Garrett Murphy you would be correct making it 46-30 with 7:07 left in the game.
    • The Knights were not ready to get on the bus and go home just yet as they scored the next time they had the ball on a 48 yd. TD run by Casen Buzhardt but the 2 point conversion failed.
    • The Crusaders finished all the scoring in the game the next time they had the ball as Caleb hardy decided to score one more time this time from the 48 yds. out but the 2-point conversion failed making the final 52-36
    • Some Stats
      • Rushing… The Crusaders finished with 397 yds. rushing with Garrett Murphy having 258 of them in 24 carries and he scored 4 rushing TDs while Caleb Hardy finished with133 yds. in 10 carries and 2 TDs.
      • Passing…  Ethan Collins completed 9 of 11 attempts for 87 yds., no interceptions and 1 TD to Caleb Hardy.
      • To see more stats for the Crusaders in the game click here.

    • The Tigers scored again at the end of their next possession on a 50 yard TD pass from Bragg to Mason Dial… Bragg also carried it in to make the score 14-0 Tigers with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

    • The Saints fumbled the ball on the first play of their first possession in the second half and it was recovered by the Tigers Jakayden Adams at the Saints 20 yard line… A few plays later Kevin Bryson carried it in from the 7 to make the score 26-0 Tigers as the two-point conversion failed.
    • Neither team was able to generate much offense after that as the Tigers played many players who had not seen action in the first half.
  • Sanders 30 – Dixie 22… The Yellow jackets traveled to Dixie… In the game Sanders Travion Robinson  had 5 TDS and an interception… He also forced a fumble and had a 95 yd. kick return for a TD… One of his TDSs was a 34 yd.  Laurens HS

  • Fernandez Names Laurens County TD Club Player of the Week… On Monday (9-16-24) the Laurens County Touchdown Club announced that Nehemias “Nemo” has been chosen as the Clubs Player of the Week for his performance in the Raiders hard fought 20-17 loss to AC Flora last Friday in Columbia…He carried the ball 26 times for 217 yards and scored 1 touchdown on a 49 yard run in the third quarter… He averaged 8.3 yards per carry in the game… Head Coach Greg Porter stated, “Nehemias has an incredible work ethic on and off the field…  Nemo has always put the Team first and when needed to play quarterback, there was no hesitation…  It’s about the Team from him.”.. • AC Flora 20 – Laurens 17… The Laurens Raider traveled to Columbia last Friday night to take on the AC Flora Falcons and played their best game of the season but still came up short as the Falcons took a 20-17 win… Coach Porter is not one to make excuses but the truth be known,  the  Raiders are handicapped by injuries especially in the quarterback position as the top 2 are out forcing the Raiders to play a wildcat style offense which considering everything the coaches and players have done well with… The defense has done well basically using the bend but don’t break approach.
    • The Falcons scored first on a 24 yd. pass play late in the first quarter and led 7-0… The Raiders only score in the first half came on a 36 yd. field goal by Brock Franklin with just over 2 minutes left in the half.
    • Flora scored again in the 3rd quarter on another pass play but missed the PAT to make it 13-3 Falcons.
    • The Raiders recovered a Flora fumble at their own 48 yd. line and 2 plays later Nehemias (Nemo) Fernandez carried it 49 yds. for the score and with Franklin’s PAT the score stood 13-10 just before the end of the 3rd quarter.
    • Flora scored about midway through the 4th quarter to make it 20-10 Flora.
    • The Raiders answered that driving back down the field and scoring on a 1 yd. run by Denari Lee-Jackson and Franklin again made the Pat to make the score 20-17 Falcons.
    • The Raiders tried to mount a late drive but a couple of untimely penalties put then behind the chains and they turned the ball over on down and AC Flora ran out the Clock
    • Some Stats:
      • Total Yds.: Flora 363 (212 rushing) – Laurens 213 (182 rushing)
      • Penalties: Flora 7-62, – Laurens 9-91
      • Nemo Fernandez led both teams in rushing as he had 215 yds. in 26 carries and scored 1 TD.

    • Up Next… The Raiders get a week off as they have no game this coming Friday and this comes at a great time as they have a good chance of getting most of their injured players well… The return home to take on the Lexington Wildcats Friday, Sept. 27th.

Thornwell… The Thornwell Saints volleyball has had a rough time the last couple of matches.

  • Abbeville 3 – Saints 0…  Last Thursday (9-12) the teams traveled to Abbeville and the varsity lost 3-0… set scores were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-23… To see some Thornwell stats on the match click here… The JV team also lost by a score of 2-0… Set scores were 25-15 and 25-23… Click here to see some stats on the match.
